Recently I picked up a new hobby. Having gone to a local craft store to pick up a jewlery making compnent for my sister I was quite surprised, albeit pleasantly, to find chain maille jewelery kits.
Thrilled at the idea learning this new hobby I purchased one of these kits, and one evening after I had the girls to bed I made myself a pair of earrings that the kit titled "Japanese Lattice" earrings also in this kit was enough jump rings for a pair of "Japanese 6-in-1" earrings. I have completed only one of this pair.
After my sister saw my earrings she too wanted a pair, though sadly she does not appreciate the maille aspect, but only the beauty of the earrings. So I agreed to make her a pair. I went back to the store to purchase another kit and they were out of the earring, but had a kit for a "Japanese 6-in-1" bracelet. I purchased this kit and some ear wires and made her a pair of earrings as well. Having seen this the elder of my two younger brother was jealous of the maille (though most assuredly not of the earrings), so I agreed to purchase another kit and make him a maill chain necklace. At this time I purchased a kit for a "Byzantine" bracelet (which is the chain pattern my brother likes better—I will be purchasing enough jumprings for this project seperately) and a kit for a "Helms" necklace. The "Helms" necklace I will apparently be making for the youngest of my brothers (aka Drayal).
I also have completed two more pairs of earrings; "Byzantine Chain" and "Double Flower Chain."
I have also purchased a "European 4-in-1" necklace kit for myslef.
Has anyone else also made maille jewlelry? Have you made yourself anything maille?
Discussion in this thread is not limited soly to maille jewelery. Pleas also use this thread to discuss the historical aspect of chanmaille, the aesthetics of chainmaille, and anything else related.

I'm a member of the SCA: The Society for Creative Anachronism. (www.sca.org for those interested!) We try to re-create aspects of everything from the Roman Empire to 1650; my persona is a 15th-century Welshwoman. smile I love chain mail, and have made mostly small things: lengths of it to use as chain, and a coif (the head-covering used by warriors under their helmets to protect their head and neck). The SCA is world-wide, and I'm betting most of the links that come up in searches on mail/maille will be for SCA artisans. smile
Sounds like you've got quite the hobby going now! smile Can you post pics of the jewelry?

So you actually made a coif? Wow!
I haven't taken any pictures, but I guess I could. I'm really lazy when it comes to putting the pics from my camera onto my computer however. sweatdrop
Do you have a picture of the coif that you made?

I've played with making some - mostly posts I found online and recreated it myself... very time consuming and really fun! I want to make a little shirt for my American Girl Doll. If I ever get around to it - I'll post a picture.

My room mate actually makes cool chain jewelry so I have a lot of stuff, she's also making me a teddy bear sized chain shirt for Christmas...
