Studio Ghibli//Nausicaa.net

Don't know what Studio Ghibli is or what they have done? Well, Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation film studio. The studio is primarily home to critically acclaimed animation directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata although projects are not limited to them alone. The Studio's films are very popular and widely praised in and outside of Japan.

Pre- Studio works: (Key works of either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata or both which lead up to the creation of Studio Ghibli)
* Panda! Go Panda!
* Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
* Chie the Brat
* Gauche the Cellist
* Lupin III TV
* World Masterpiece Theater
* Conan, The Boy of the Future
* Sherlock Hound
* Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Studio Ghibli Films:
* Laputa: Castle in the Sky (Hayao Miyazaki)
* Grave of the Fireflies (Isao Takahata)
* My Neighbor Totoro (Hayao Miyazaki)
* Kiki's Delivery Service (Hayao Miyazaki)
* Only Yesterday (Isao Takahata)
* Porco Rosso (Hayao Miyazaki)
* The Ocean Waves (Tomomi Mochizuki)
* Pom Poko (Isao Takahata)
* Whisper of the Heart (Yoshifumi Kondou)
* Princess Mononoke (Hayao Miyazaki)
* My Neighbors the Yamadas (Isao Takahata)
* Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki)
* The Cat Returns (Hiroyuki Morita)
* Howl's Moving Castle (Hayao Miyazaki)
* Tales from Earthsea (Goro Miyazaki)

Works in Progress:
* Ponyo on a Cliff (Hayao Miyazaki)

With that said, this is the place to talk and chat any and everything Studio Ghibli! What films you loved, favorite theme songs, favorite characters, ect. Please be respectful and let people hold their own opinions, not everyone has to think Studio Ghibli is a gift from God.

Princess Mononoke is probably my favorite anime movie of all time. It's one of the few movies I've watched on multiple occasions. I've gotta give props to Spirited Away as well.

I really want to see Grave of the Fireflies, and while I don't care too much about seeing Howl's Moving Castle I've heard good things...

And damn, I want to see Tales from Earthsea.

I haven't heard awesome things about Tales from Earthsea, not bad things but not great. Plenty of bloggers and critics are giving it slanted positive reviews for the sake of the director being Miyazaki's son and a Studio Ghibli film- the same thing was done for the last 2 PIXAR films. I'll still see it of course, and can't wait to see it.

My favorite Ghibli film is Grave of the Fireflies by far. The word 'masterpiece' doesn't mean a lot nowadays especially since that title is given, unjustly, to plenty an animated film- but Fireflies most definitely deserves the title over any other Ghibli work. I personally prefer Isao Takahata's work to Hayao Miyazaki's a lot of the time, although I'm a very big fan of Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

I've never actually seen a review for Earthsea, just heard that it was coming out and who was making it and that was enough for me. That was a while ago though.

Yeah, I'm pretty positive Miyazaki had a hand in a animated Heidi which I believe falls under World Masterpiece Theater which was a pre-Studio Ghibli endeavor.

...
...
One of these days.

As far as favorites go, Grave of the Fireflies and Nausicaa get my tops, one for its excellent portrayal of another time, another place, a whole other Japan. The other for its mythological aspects, its setting and its overall ... everything.

Grave of the Fire Flies hands down for me personally, although I love Laputa as well. As for Nausicaa, I just highly perfer the manga over the film.

Having read a good chunk of the manga as well ... I don't blame you one bit. biggrin It makes me wish that instead of a movie ... it would have served better as a series.

It could still happen though.

Which would be awesome.

I absolutely LOVE Studio Ghibli films! I haven't seen very many but my Dad let me take the ones we had with me whee so I can watch them here.
I actually really liked Howl's Moving Castle (Christian Bale DROOOOL) and thought it was animated and voiced over very well! It's very pretty to look at lol
I also love Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and The Cat Returns.
I finally got to see My Neighbor Tortoro, which I really liked. It's so cute!
And Whisper of the Heart, which just made me go "AWWWWWWW!! LOVEY-DOVEY LOVE!!" at the end.
I haven't seen the Fireflies one or the Earthsea one, although I did see part of the Sci Fi series. Not enough to have an opinion on it but it looked ok.
