i think the market place affects our price guides alittle.its the people who make the prices and we just go buy what they think is popular.some people go nuts when a new item appears but a week later its down in price.an ex. would be the alien hunter mask and the alien mask.do u guys agree or disagree.

I believe it's the market place that is the main "Price setter" the price guide I believe is a guide, a suggestion to use that price that they "suggest" and set cost around it. Price guide is used to compare prices (that is if you use other price guides with let's say, this price guide and compare the price guides to give an accurate, reasonable amount. but the market place is filled with gaians. So the price is always set by the People/ the community. As you can see, the staff of Gaia dont actually mention any prices when they let out a rare item (excluding the items in the shops) That's because they want to see how many people like it. The price is always set not by the marketplace or the Price guide. Its most likely priced by the popularity. (hmm I think Ive contredicted myself plus Im starting to think its not popularity) The question Im wondering is: How do the price guides get their prices? what is the source?

Personally I don't think that the marketplace should play a part in the price guides at all. As many people before me said, it is just a place to put an item for some quick pure. And many people overprice items because they want to see if people will buy them. I the exchange is the best place for items 10k and up I think because you have a better chance of getting around what you want. In the marketplace you can never sell something for the price it should be. You usually have to put the buy now price quite a bit lower than the value of the item to get any kind of results. The marketplace is just a place to sell the commons that no one will want in the exchange.

I see the market place as a tool every bit as vaid in determining prices as the exchange. Prices, as has been said, are made by supply and demand, and nowhere can you judge an item's 'pure' value quicker than by successful transactions in the market place.
I suppose that apart from the obviously overinflated Buy Now things you see in the market (oooh, how I hate them cluttering up the page!), the market closely follows the price guides. Most of the stuff I see ends up in the mid-price guides range.
I like the market place for the fact that you sell items and forget about them. No need to bump your thread or deal with offers obviously too low. On the other hand, the haggling atmosphere (once tyou're used to it_ of teh Exchange is a lot more exciting.
Oh, and to PremiumHeart, I'm one of those people that try to buy bargains off teh Market (and the Exchange) and then sell them for more. Why not?
In summary, I agree with the common consent that teh market place is convenient for mid-range items and commons in that it gets you cash easily, and it is a great convenience for bargain hunters. but for high end items and non-pure auctions, nothing can beat an Exchange thread.

it is possible to use the market place in price calculations. 3nodding
you just need to know how. and you need economics.

the prices that the items are sold at should be the main factor. if the market place helps in that which it does then yes the market place a usable source of information.
because whether we like it or not people pay those prices.

I don't use the Marketplace to set prices since I have no idea if something is selling or not at the price stated. Simple as that.

True, but I have heard of sales being cancelled. And if the price is low you cannot tell if it gets cancelled or not, even at the last minute. You just don't know for sure. But for some things, I concede, you probably do get a reasonable price estimate from them.

Gaia exchange is more like umm...real life exchange to a point. It has major inflation and it seems to be harder and easier to get funding for the items, (you can get free gold by just lurking, but in order to get a 50k item, you would have to hustle big time ninja Where in life, you would just need an extra education or a good job and you could get that in a few months time, depending on the market and luck.)
Many times it's harder to sell anything on the exchange or run a shop, which is why they have wanted sections as well as the gambino market, even though you need 2k or so just to run that. With the fishing as well as battle coming, it will eventually get better to get the gold fundings for stuff as portables and hats without hustling and trying your luck in the lottos ninja
Gen and EVIL along with SIN and the newer one, (that I cannot think of,) are helpful indeed and helps out with the greedy people to a point as well as hassling. I use it to estimate the bigger items and how much to save or sell, (such as my snail slow AFK/ANG-S or OMG/NM-S quest and future panda hat quest.)

Marketplace inflation is rampant though. I saw a Nov letter selling on the Exchange today for ~115k. AB was 118k. I went and checked the Marketplace out of curiosity. There was one letter there for 118k and all the rest were higher. That does not reflect the real cost of Nov letters. If a price guide were to go by the Marketplace in this instance then the price guide would be inflating the cost of the letters out of proportion to what they are really worth.
