((Hello and welcome.))

Paleth looked up at the bronze dragon and bugled a greeting. Kimm watched as the rider dismounted and sent his bronze to hunt.

They are M'gor and bronze Cadeth.

Thank you, Palenth.

Kimm walked over to M'gor. "Greetings, bronze rider," she said cheerfully. "I am Kimm, and that blue lump over there is Palenth. A good day to hunt, don't you think?"

Rennet popped into the air above Kimm and settled on the girl's shoulder. She peered at M'gor with gently whirling blue eyes.

M'gor turned at the sound. "Hello then, bluerider. And to you, Palenth. Yes this is a good day to hunt."

Cadeth warbled from somewhere. Greetings Palenth.

Kimm watched with pride as the sturdy, nine-month-old blue launched himself ito the air, picked out a wherry well-separated from the flock, and made his second kill.

That's all for now, Palenth. Two fills your stomach.

For now. When I'm older, then I will hunt more.

Kimm grinned at Palenth's grumbled response in spite of herself. She was just so glad to have Palenth.

The large bronze flew overhead again after his third wherry of the day.

M'gor watched the two-year-old bronze carefully. "That's enough, Cadeth, you'll never be able to get up off the ground if you eat anymore."

I will always get off the ground, M'gor. You say those things like you believe I am getting fat. The bronze sounded vaguely offended.

M'gor only smiled. 'I'm not calling you fat, dear frined, I'm mearly looking out for you.'

The bronze made a huffing sound but his rider's answer seemed to satisfy him.

"Your bronze seems to be hunting very well," Kimm said. "A good flier."

Better than I am?

You are a wonderful flier, Palenth. Very agile and manueverable. I trust no other dragon more.

Kimm watched as Palenth executed a little run before leaping into the air and beating his wings to gain sufficient altitude. He glided to where she and M'gor were standing and landed just behind them, careful not to throw up much dirt.

"Well done," Kimm whispered to him as she stroked the muzzle he extended.

M'gor smiled proudly at the large bronze. "He's a great flyer I just wish he wouldn't eat so much."

As if to prove that he was just as capable as the smaller blue, Cadeth circled once more and landed carefully next to his rider. Surprisingly, the bronze didn't kick up any dirt.

M'gor laughed at this. "Very well done my friend."

The bronze looked at him smugly.

"Well, at least what he's eating keeps him going," Kimm said. "Otherwise you'd have quite a bit of trouble on your hands, huh?"

As the bronze landed, Palenth shifted away from him. For a moment, Kimm saw the orange of annoyance flicker across his blue eyes, but then it was gone.

I am smaller and more agile in the air. I do not need to prove myself with antics. Do I, Kimm? Palenth said it more as a statement than a question, but Kimm smiled at him reassuringly.

Of course not, Palenth. Let him have his fun. After all, he's got more to lift than you, and more for his rider to bathe and oil. You are strong, small, quick, agile, smart, beatiful, and the most wonderful dragon on Pern.

Satisfactorily reassured, the blue dragon contented himself to watching the wherry flock regroup cautiously across the valley from the two dragons. Out of the corner of his eye, he kept watch on the two riders and the bronze.

M'gor shook his head. "He has his moments, my Cadeth does, but he's a good fellow. I don't know what I'd do without him."

The bronze bent his head to nuzzle his nose against his rider. I too would be at a loss, my own.

M'gor smiled gently at that.

Kimm smiled, recognizing the special bond between dragon and rider. She looked up Palenth and felt a pang a fear. If she lost him...

You will not lose me. I will never leave you. You need me too much, and I need you.

Kimm felt tears in her eyes. She hadn't meant for Palenth to know her deepest fear. But she was glad, because he had reassured her with the words she needed most.

"I think," she said slowly, looking for words. "I think that every rider feels like that. Holders and Crafters can't understand. It's something only dragonriders can know. We know the feeling, share it, and reassure each other. Because we won't let our friends be torn part."

M'gor nodded solemnly at her comment. "That's true, even though I believe nonriders certainly try to understand us, they have no hope to."
