While I think vegetarianism and veganism are admirable, I hate peta with a passion. That's some sick stuff, right there. Their methods are deplorable.
But I do agree that animals are hella exploited. And the average person consumes like five times as much meat as necessary. You only really need one small serving of meat a day to get the nutritional benefits (not that you necessarily need to eat meat to get those benefits, but most people are lazy.) And we waste so many resources farming all this meat that we don't even need.
My mom has this obsession with putting ground beef into like everything she cooks stare

People tend to assume I'm a vegetarian for whatever reason. I'm actually really big into trying to support only companies that provide environmentally/socially responsible products but...it's an uphill struggle. confused
I do like tofu though. >.>

A lot of the videos that circulate aren't necessarily real. Many members of PETA, for example, have been charged with cruelty to animals. Basically, they stage it. I wouldn't deny that animal cruelty is common within the meat industry, but it's difficult to know the degree when there are so many conflicting sources.
That said, I can see so many good things about avoiding meat. The meat industry is probably the most wasteful. Huge amounts of land are deforested to raise cattle, cattle themselves produce enough methane to contribute to global warming. Red meat is not even good for you in the quantities that it's consumed. Large-scale soil erosion takes place on grazing land (because it has to be deforested). And on top of all of this, about 80% of grains produced are fed to livestock. This uses up 50% of our water.
I avoid poultry and beef whenever I can, but I do sometimes eat shell fish and some other fish (which actually have more protein in them than livestock). Soy is good, and so are any kind of nuts/beans. It's easy enough to live without meat; we should eat a lot more vegetables than meat anyways.

Firescares Messenger_Of_The_Moon What do you mean you don't "buy into" the cruelty to animals? It's happening, to a lot of animals. Most people choose not to think about it (or sometimes not to care), but it does happen. Well When I say I don't buy into it I just mean Its not really something that strikes me in daily life as all that important, as we are all well aware their are Human Beings being horrifically abused, and If I wanted to change something about myself, I would probably try to find a way to change my lifestyle that might help them first or even just one person in that situation. I just don't see how by my choosing not to eat meat would impact how an animal is raised or butchered Now, I wouldn't want to see Domestic animals or endangered species being treated in a cruel way, and its not that I don't understand whats happening to them or that I'm just a b***h, For me personally though, its not a matter of "aww poor chicken/cow/pig, how can I eat them" For me its a matter of thank god I have something to eat at all and Thank god I don't have to go out and hunt, kill, and butcher it myself every night or go hungry, With the flip of a coin I could have been born into a famine riddled country where they have nothing and would kill for the opportunity to get their hands on the meat that I turned my nose up too I find it pretty hard to respect the opinion that it's 'okay' to cause other living creatures incredible physical and mental suffering, or that it's 'more okay' than doing so to humans or to 'domestic and endangered' species.

Another thing about it is the fact that the majority of our food is fed to our food. We'd actually have a much more stable food supply if we didn't eat as much meat. 80% of our agricultural produce goes to the animals that we eat. I think that's just nonsense. And, to be honest, the amount of meat the average North American eats is not in any way healthy.
