I just take a letter, like 'k' or 't' and experiment with different sounds with it until I find what I like.

For example;

Tanzin Barr
Kiavra Shae
Miliane
Boura
Terlimaine
Leramine

There are 4 outlets for making up a name. Name meaning, what it means, Name sound, what it sounds like, what description or nationality, Name Association, what famous dude has the name who is similar-ish. The last is pure creativity. I have only named one character out of pure creativity. Guess which one:

Melchizedek (nope! he's a bible guy and his name means "king of righteousness")
Carl (no.)
Lee (not really.)
Martin (yah, you think I made up that name?)
Jegenflaneetapoo (Yah, it's him xd )

Jehosaphat

My best name yet is Daihlsrainae... I luv it cuz it's so weird and I've never heard it before... and if it is out there they stole it. ninja JK. Lmao. But yah... I love unique names.

I just pick a letter and go from there. I tend to end girl's names in "a" though.. >_> Kinda a bad habit.

These are character names I've used (please don't use, and they're all female): Jarea, Isi'iantha, Liia, Mokia, Moira (which I think is actually a real name, oops), Igrena, Linlin, Chaza, and more that I can't remember.

one of my favorites is Kina it means "bark of the tree" and it suits one of my characters perfectly because bark is supposed to be stronge and able to handle bad weather well the character is abused by her gaurdians but she runs away and starts to recover from that ordeal
another is Akiko it means "bright light"
and Machiko "fortunate" and Nyoko "Gem"

Sometimes the best names are the ones you don't think of right away. Historical names can have a big impact on readers who may not know the origins but recognize them nonetheless. A bad example would be using the name's Lucifer and Gabriel, because they both have a lot of history and they represent the far stretches of good and evil.

I love Celtic/Olde English names, I just feel drawn to them and most of my characters' names have these roots.

Kerridwyn nic Neall
Rosmerta Allwyn Thompson
Rexford Grace
Phoenixus
Rozenwyn Quennell

Names of Egyptian origin are fanciful sounding as well and can help with characterization

Nefertari
Makareti
Kehara

I tend to look at the character (I usually draw them before i name them) and name them with the first thing that pops into my head that fits them. I get names like this:

Atrunea
Lain
Kishna
Eoa
Calniro
Etlin
and many more...

I like to use names that have meaning or evoke a feeling, so I have a character named Narcissus, Jewell, Ssion, Draco... For more unusual names, I've gone all sorts of places--the Klingon dictionary has given me lots of great names for demonic entities when I GM (I try never to use anyone else's work when I write something I'm hoping to have published someday).

Unless that is a part of what you want to draw on. Oh, and Lucifer literally means "lightbringer". He was first among the host of heaven long before he fell...

Celtic has such soft, rolling sounds that it makes for wonderful names. If you like the Egyptian names, take a look at Arabic and Indonesian names.

XD I have a list of names. Whenever I come across a good name, I add it to that list. Recently I came across a list of phobias and just added all the prefixes. Usually the name comes from me thinking of random sounds, or looking at mispellings or license plates, or French words. For example, Aeke and Taer are the names of two emotionless immortal enigmas of mine, and I got them from license plates. I forget where Ili, the third one, came from. Their counterpart is named Solypsos - originally thinking of Solypsis, but that sounded like a girl's name and he's... not. Based on solipsism. You all get a cookie. And... In another roleplay, because Solypsos is finding his way everywhere, he's known as Niuim. Where'd I get that? A mispelling of aluminum. Yeah. ^.^

I use backward method and then screw with it a little. It usually brings about some pretty casual names (like my alltime fav character: Raavi (Raeva) somehow was spawned from Sanguinary, or Red Bile of Passion) or if you do it in what I call "Backwards Proper" you just spell it backwards, switch a few letters and write what it sounds like rather than how its spelled. That usually makes some pretty crazy names.

Most of the time, though, go to some "Character naming sites" and just browse through some of the names and get inspired. Like Raavi's Short-time, deep-relationship boyfriend Danik somehow came from Fu Huang Do.

Then again, I go for somewhat normal names for normal people, blank names for people who don't really matter, and then BIZZARE names for the darker characters. Those I usually just let pop out of my head.
