Well that saved me to posting why since a lot posted why. XD
I wonder though, if his little sister hadn't died, would he not cross dress and be straight? O__O He'd be an extra to Miaka's "guy" list. sweatdrop

Either way I like Nuriko...He/She was a cool character...the way he didicates his live for his sister...and he also became a man to protect Miaka...So in a way, after he reveals his secret he is kinda useless...

O__O He'd be an extra to Miaka's "guy" list. sweatdrop ***SPOILER*** Actually, he ends up falling for Miaka in the second half of the series... xp and ends up wearing guy clothing. It's around the time, right before he dies...I believe Miaka even overhears him. (It's been so long though, that I can't be sure until I rewatch it.)

question hmmm..... "was he a man or a woman" was the suzaku party's question when they buried him... and miaka said "Nuriko is Nuriko".... blaugh I love watching that part.. it's really cute for me......
confused So in the end, he's gender is still vague... what do u think? rofl i am CONFUSED!!!

MikoTenma Miaka could have used one of her wishes to turn Nuriko into a woman.............thats of coures if he had not died crying Miaka was going to wish for that, but yea...he died.

angel_baby_4 PRINCE-BELIAL Why did he became a lady-in-waiting at Hotohori's court? I watched the series a long time ago, and I don't remember this clearly. Also, how it was. A man with lady's heart (soul)? He told something like this, if I remember correctly. His sister was killed when he was younger. So, in her memory, he began to dress as a woman and the men from the courts were gathering women for the emperor's harem. Anyways, they saw Nuriko and took him, mistaking him for a woman. That's how it happened. ^.^

That's how it happened. ^.^ Actually, that's only part of the reason. You learn more in YukiYasha Den, the novel about Ryuuen Chou. He actually joined because the one girl who he fell in love with, and who fell in love with him, died saving him. Her wish had been to be Hotohori's wife, because Hotohori had once saved her life, from a runaway carriage. The same carriage that ran over Kourin.

The only reason Nuriko wanted to be a woman was so he/she could legitimately be with Hotohori. The Emperor could very well have had a male lover, but the lover in question couldn't be the ONLY love. After all, Emperors need heirs, and it's sort of tough for two men to have a baby on their own. I don't think Nuriko could have stood that, even if Hotohori had no feelings for the other woman.
After they were reborn, there was really no need for him to be born a girl. Hotohori had become a common village boy, though still beautiful. The two could have run off together not worrying about an heir or anything, though they'd still have to deal with their folks weirding out.
Now, I'll give you Hotohori did not seem to be the least interested in men in the series. But seriously, the only ones who hit on him- that bandit guy and Nuriko- just came on too strong. I would think ANYONE would get sick of that. Especially if there was no hope.
But anyway...

Okay, here's the story from me.
Ryuuen went to a town where he fell in love with a girl, and she fell in love with him. The girl, before falling in love with Nuriko, had told him that her greatest joy would be to become Hotohori's wife.
The girl died in his arms, after saving his life.
The thing is the day Kourin was killed, another girl was also nearly killed, but hotohori saved her. The girl was the one Nuriko later fell in love with. xD; Had the girl been killed, Kourin would have lived, but Nuriko would never have fallen in love.
Anyways, Nuriko later joined Hotohori's because he felt guilty about the girl AND Kourin's deaths.
