It's been a while since I last let my thoughts be known in here, so I shall express them as they built up. Now, Raoul...well....

FOP, FOP, FOP, DANDY, WUSS, FOP, FOPPDY, FOP!!!

There. I think that casts some illumination on my opinion. Sure, he's brave to try to face Erik. And yes, he is pure of heart to try to save Christine. But he's just not Erik. There's no forlorn hope of happiness. There's no suffering of his soul. So he used to eat chocolates with Christine and he rescued her scarf from the sea (from the book), but Erik has given her passion and talent! Raoul can't compete with that!

I agree with you that Raoul can't compete with Erik's passion, talent, and suffering, but why does that make him a fop, dandy, or wuss? The dictionary definition for a fop is a man who is excessively vain and concerned about his dress, appearance, and manners. I don't think that's Raoul. No one really said in the book or the movie that Raoul was that vain. Same thing goes for the word dandy. I don't completely understand how Raoul is a "wuss."
Hmmm. Good point, but I shall show my thoughts. Firstly, the fop point. This man, who is Vicomte deChagney, would dress to impress. He's a Vicomte! You would see him dressed in a sack or a pair of old jeans. Also, the line "order your fine horses." Not normal ones, but "fine" ones. The best bred horses. That implies both wealth, status and vanity to me. Now, the wuss part. I admit that my bias lies in Erik's direction. But, Raoul just seems to a little to comfortable in his position of Vicomte. In the book, his brother goes searching for Erik, and dies in the process. Raoul sits back and only waits until Christine is abducted before commencing his hunt. If Raoul truly cared about Christine, wouldn't he have gone searching for Erik long before to ensure Christine safety? Complacency, cowardice or stupidity?

If any of you have read the book you'll realize that Raoul is a total idiot. I hate Raoul with a passion!!! If it weren't for the Persian Raoul would of died trying to find Christine in the Phantoms underground home. I hate how they make Raoul seem more intelligent than he really is in the movies and in the play. Because he really is just a complete moron. He could never actually take the Phantom in a fight he'd die a horrible death. If they ever gave Raoul his real metal compacity he would of been dead once Erik got ahold of him. Anyone who agrees with me we should ban together and try and get the real version straight from the book made into a movie. We should have an angry mob too just for fun. I'll make signs... xp

I totally agree! Seriously, they made him smart in the play and movie, when he really has the IQ of a goldfish!

Yes! Thank you I thought i was the only one! Let's start an angry 'I hate Raoul' Group. We can make t-shirts and pins. ^_^

I found this on deviant art. By phantomplushi. Don't know why he's got a donut but it's still awesome!

Cute. =3

And I'll make an Anti-Raoul Theme Song!

Hooray!!! Lol. That's awesome. I seriously hate Raoul. The Erik deserves Christine not that whiner! He didn't even go out of his way to really win her affection. He's a loser! xp

Hey! I'm half Raoul fan! But the other half totally agrees with every word you say. 4laugh

But the love you never had is etched in stone forever,
Reminding you of what might have been...

Raoul does not love Erik. =D

Raoul still does not love Erik. twisted

The love you never had stays with you like a shadow:
So close, but when you reach, there's no one there...

"Crack! I'm the puffy shirt of Eternal Love!" XD All of that made me giggle. (But I do have a bit of a thing for the Meg/Raoul pairing. They are equally adorable, ALW!Meg could be attracted to him (yes, I know that Leroux!Meg is destined to be an empress or whatnot), and hey--it leaves the Erik/Christine pairing wide open. XD)

On a completely unrelated note, I have been on Musicals.net recently. Many of the members are theater snobs with sticks up their bums, but a lot of them are cool too. Whether or not they like Phantom or ALW, the general consensus is that Erik has a personality disorder, and that he shouldn't be paired up with anyone. Most consider him a typical "villian", claiming that he still killed people and that his demented past was no excuse.
-
I was rather surprised. I mean, I'm used to having people sympathize for musical!Erik. But at a sleep-over the other day, I brought Phantom and my friend Kate--who had never seen it previously--said that he was crazy and shouldn't have killed "that guy in the rafters." She didn't mind, or maybe was even glad, that Christine went away with Raoul. Mind you, we were making fun of Gerard the whole time (I couldn't help myself; Phantom fan or not, I still dislike the actors in the movie), and that might have had something to do with it.
-
I don't know. My initial reaction to seeing the musical for the first time was to give Erik a hug and then drag Christine (who, of course, went willingly XD) back to him. I still love Erik as a character, but recently I have been wondering...Does that say something about my character? I'm probably reading too much into it, but I find it odd now that I didn't even consider the whole "he's crazy and kills people" aspect.

Well. I don't like him for two reasons.
1. He made Erik depressed by stealing Christine from him.
2. Noticed how he ONLY recognized Christine AFTER she had become the star of the production?

But he has a good singing voice, i'll give him that.

Raoul is a fop don't forget

As much as I think that Raoul is a pansy fop I don't hate him. Remember he didn't really do anything other then love Christine. He did not force Christine to choose him Christine choose him on her own. So the person I dislike is Christine.

I loved him in the begining and then read the book where all he did was cry and I was like OMG what a wuss so now I just can't stand him...everyone needs danger and lust in their lives and there was no denying that he did love her

I both like and dislike Raoul.
When I first saw the movie I thought,"Wow, Raoul is a great guy!", but then I started falling in love with Erik and one thing led to another, I hated Raoul for hurting poor Erik
Then one day, I wen't to a bookstore and secured a copy of Leroux's original novel. I gained respect for Raoul because he cared for Christine so much.
But the I got the Awesome Kay Book and lost a little bit of respect.
Well, you get the point. Somtimes I just laugh and make fun of him for being a dream crushing fop, and sometimes I just love him to pieces, but not as much as Erik. heart sweatdrop

For Christine, yes. He was perfect for Christine, in a way. Phantom should have had someone better than that psychotic teen who couldn't make up her mind. ;P

Raoul and Christine were both shallow, immature, indecisive and petulant. They make a perfect couple.

Oh! And in the book, Raoul was a much better character. He was more heroic and brave in the book..

I found him even MORE childish, jealous, and vain in the book. (That was possible?!)
