Home is where the Heart is... right?

It's been some time since I left fathers house, I was so happy to be ride of his overlord like ruling and his perfect plan for me. I was never perfect in his eyes, and perhaps that was a good thing, it gave me the chance to come here. To Maine. Such a pretty little state. Even though it's easy to see I'm not from the United States, the students at school have accepted me, though slightly reluctantly.

I start at my job today. Nina's books. Mother would be thrilled. Father would think it a drab and boring place, but he thinks that about most things.

[ Nina's Books ]

To most people the little book store that Karahlynn worked out was too small, with not enough titles. The door was slightly sqeeky, and the wooden floor creeked on the right hand side of the store. They saw the old leather bound books, with old titles, most of which whose authors had died centuries ago.

However to Karahlynn, the dusty smell of old leather and years of hidden dust was inviting as any clean house, the warm woods and soft plush chairs that sat in odd angles were comfortable and loving as any lovers embrace. This small store, filled with the knowledge of ages long past, was a haven for her, and she had enjoyed working here from the very first day.

"Michael! Bring me the ladder, I found Brutus!" a female voice yelled from the middle of the shop. The voice belonged to Rita, the owner of Nina's Books. She was a 5' tall spirited lady in her mid 40's with bright red hair and vivid green eyes. She was the life of any party, or that's what she said.

"Coming," a male voice replied. Michael, Rita's only child. While his mother was a small lady, he obviously had taken after his dead father. He was well over 6' with dark brown hair and his mothers green eyes.

Standing behind the counter, Karahlynn quietly watched Michael lug out a ladder, positioning it wherever his mother was. A red head was soon seen poking out from above the bookcases where Rita found Brutus. Brutus while not human had his own human qualities, the huge persian cat had such a lazy disposition he hardly ever got into trouble, that is... unless there was a mouse around. The huge cat was terrified of mice, and thus why Rita was now climbing down the ladder with said cat in her arm. "Brutus, really, it was just a little one," she said to the fluffy cat before she was once again out of Karahlynns line of sight.

"Some great hunter he turned out to be," Michael could be heard say before Kara could hear the ladder being put back up.

"Even the best warriors have their weakness... his just happens to be 2 inches long and furry," Karahlynn commented with a smile, as Michael came to lean against the counter with her.

"I guess you're right."

"Of course she's right. Brutus is a wonderful cat, he just has a small fear," Rita said as she carried the said animal to the front where she set him on the counter. Brutus immediately laid down and curled up to sleep.

With a laugh, Karahlynn ran a hand over his soft fur before smiling. "Let the warrior rest, we have inventory to do."

"Aw man!"

[ A Desperate Search ]
Quest 1

The night hadn't been easy on Karahlynn, the loud crashes and the heavy rain had made it nearly impossible for her to get home from the book store. Michael had to take two umbrellas and hold her to his side to get her home relatively dry.

The moment she got home she found herself confused. Something wasn't right. Every day when she'd open the door, Loki would be sitting at the door to pounce her with kisses. He wasn't there. "Loki?" Karahlynn called before shutting the door and locking it behind her. "Loki?" she called again when she got no reply. Dropping her bag by the door, the blonde began to walk through the rooms of her apartment, panic slowly creeping into her movements. "Loki?" She called once more before running to the window. Woods were behind her apartment, it was were the neighbors and her would let their dogs run around to get exercise. "Oh god."

Not even bothering with a jacket, Karahlynn tore from her apartment. Running down the stairs and across the lawn in the back. "Loki!" she shouted at the forests edge, momentarily worried about what might be in those dark woods. "Loki!!" she cried again before throwing caution to the wind and hurrying into the forest.

Picking her way through the gnarled branches and bush covered floor, Karahlynn continued to call out to her lost companion. He was her friend, from the first moment she'd seen him they'd had a connection. The husky always knew when she was upset and would come curl up with her. "Loki!" She cried out, a loud crash of lightening streaked through the sky brightening the surroundings to an almost blinding light. The boom that came afterwards was so loud Karahlynn had to cover her ears, turning around to try and see farther into the forest.

The turn had not been in her favor, her sneaker-ed foot caught a vine on the floor and she fell. "Ah!" she gasped as the sickening feeling of weightlessness took over before she was sent plummeting backwards down the mud covered sloop. Leaves and branches scratched her arms before she landed hard on her back. "Nnngh," she groaned rolling onto her side, gasping in deep breaths of air, she randomly tested each limb, happy to find nothing broken. It was like an angel had caught her, she'd surely have broken at least a leg if not.

Standing carefully, she looked around the area she was now in. The trees were so thick here that the rain barely made it through to the ground below the high canopy. She'd never been this far before, she thought absently before walking forward. "Loki?" she called. Was he really out here? Shivering, Karahlynn wrapped her arms around herself, rubbing from her shoulders to elbows in an attempt to get herself warm. Her sweater clung to her frame, mud and leaves mixed with water in her sweater and pants. She probably looked like a monster.

Forests were old, trees carrying secrets with them till the day they died, those secrets seemed to flow around Karahlynn giving her this odd feeling of being watched. Rubbing the back of her neck, she continued on her shoes slipping here and there in the mud. It was then she saw it, a shape that looked like a dog. "Loki!?" Daring to hope, Karahlynn took off, slipping and sliding she crawled over roots and under low hanging branches. The shadow didn't move, it had to be Loki! As she grew closer, she got colder, colder and colder like the air was freezing around her. How could Loki stand it, her panicked mind thought, completely forgetting that a Husky was used to far colder temps then any other dog. "Stop!"

She stopped, that shout, it'd sounded like it came from everywhere and yet no where all at once. Blinking back the water that slipped down her face, Karahlynn looked back to the area she'd been headed to and gasped. The patch of grass that had been there wasn't there anymore. Just beyond the trees she could see the crashing ocean. Oh god..

Looking around frantically, Karahlynn bit her lip. She never hallucinated, never, even when she'd gotten really sick as a child she'd slept it all off. Walking forward, much slower then before, she looked around. "Hello? Anyone?" she asked before she felt something nudge her from behind. Screaming she turned, reading to kick whatever it was, before she cried out in relief. Sitting behind her, Loki looked up at her with curious expression. "Oh god, Loki.." Falling to her knees, she hugged the dog close, who licked her cheek soon after. "Loki, god's where were you?" She questioned the animal before laughing, "Lets go home. We can take a nice hot bath and I'll even give you some treats," she said placing a kiss on his muzzle.

Even as she picked her way through the woods, with Loki walking carefully next to her, she felt as if something very odd had happened. She'd seen a dog like shadow, had almost killed herself by jumping off a cliff and heard a loud booming voice, when no one was around. She was sure she was too tired. The fall must have shaken her up more then she thought.

When they got home. The pair walked up the stairs and into the apartment. Once in the bathroom Karahlynn got a look at herself and laughed. She looked like death warmed over. Peeling off her sneakers and socks she started a warm shower and laughed with Loki was the first to jump in. He was such a egotistical dog. He hated to be dirty. "I'm glad you're back, boy," she said before shutting the curtain and sitting on the floor. She didn't care how much water she used. She wasn't leaving the shower till she was completely clean.

"I don't know how you got out... but.. it won't happen again," With a smile, she leaned against the tile wall and let the warm water run over her. It wasn't till much later that she would question again how her faithful dog had gotten out. No doggy door, no open window, and the front door had been locked. Truly a mystery.

[ Journal Entry ]

I've been so busy with school and unexpected family visits I've had no time to write in my journal.

I keep thinking about that strange night out in the woods. How did Loki get out there, everything was closed and none of the windows were open. I just don't get it.

He's not left my side since then, he curls up with me at night when I'm studying and sleeps with me all night, he also stays away from the forest. I wonder what's in there that scares him.

[ A Secret ]

"Kara... you've been really quiet the past few days. Are you okay?"

Karahlynn looked up from the book she'd been reading her hair pushed from her face, "Huh?"

Pulling up a chair, Michael sat down at the counter with her. "You've been quiet and really out of it. Did something happen with your parents?" The boys eyes were so concerned it made her smile. He was so nice.

"No, no nothing happened with my mother or father, I did... Michael," Karahlynn started leaning in close, "Can I tell you a secret?"

Michael seemed to jolt with the idea and nodded, "Of course!" He replied, so eager to help.

"A few weeks ago, Loki got out of the apartment. I got so worried I ran into the forest thinking that's where he'd be." She started, Michael had already leaned in to hear more, his face showing concern, he knew how much she loved Loki. "Well I was running around the forest and I thought I saw him. I was so excited and relieved I started to run to him," pausing she took a deep breath, the next part was the weird part, the part that she couldn't explain. "I was running for him when I heard someone scream out 'Stop'. I was so shocked that I stoped, Michael I'm not insane when I say this. There was no one there, I was the only one and when I looked back the area where I thought I'd seen Loki was a cliff. I was running for the cliff."

Even though she didn't think she needed it, when Michael put a hand over her hand she grasped it like a lifeline. "I don't understand it. I know I was upset but to hear voices and to imagine a patch of land that wasn't there?"

She was getting upset now, she could tell.

With a soft voice, Michael smiled. "Shh, shh. I can't explain it in scientific terms but maybe, maybe it was a ghost... A lot of people have died on those cliffs, maybe someone didn't want to see that same happen to you?" It was a weird explaination but it didn't include someone thinking she was crazy.

Taking a breath she looked at their hands, Maybe he's right? Smiling Karahlynn nodded, "Maybe you're right... then I guess I should be thankfull," she said before squeezing his hand. It was so warm. "Thank you Michael. You're a really good friend."

"I uh.. yeah friend.. You're welcome Kara..." He said before slowly letting her hand go. "Hey let's go get some lunch. Mama Jo's has their special today. I know you liked it last time we went."

Smiling again, she stood. "Okay." It felt better to tell someone, and it felt even nicer to hear that it wasn't her being crazy. She wouldn't worry about it anymore.
