JUAN Pablo Montoya, the driver who ended David Coulthard's nine-year stay at McLaren-Mercedes 18 months ago, is to quit Formula 1 at the end of this season.
The Colombian has decided to switch to US-based Nascar.
Montoya has signed a deal with Chip Ganassi Racing, with whom he won the 1999 CART Championship, on a tiebreak after he tied with Bathgate's Dario Franchitti, and the 2000 Indy500.
Ganassi said: "You have to take the best guy available to you, whoever he is, wherever he is, whatever he is."
Montoya may not be the only F1 driver bound for Nascar. Only last weekend, Jacques Villeneuve said that he would consider a switch to the high-profile series once his F1 career was over.
