Pakuun This holds no profits, and there is noy illegal. It's like letting your friend borrow your Game Boy game. Not true. I could go around giving away free computer printed copies of a book, its still agaisnt the law. Its is copy-righted materials, so using it at all is not allowed by most companies copy-rights. Also stating it belongs to them doesnt allow you to use them.

If my memory serves me correct from a previous school project involving copyright laws, modifying at least 10% (it may be 25%...it has been two years) of an image makes it your image according to U.S. copyright laws . Also like Pakuun said, since we are generating no profit from usage of said images it is not considered illegal. Look at them. Has that even been edited at all? The only thing that is changed is new units he made. But every thing else is still the same, and color barely covers 1% of change, so dont say "look at the new colors". I was just merely stating that with enough editing the images are no longer copyrighted. I have never played the game, so when this thread was created that was the first time I have ever seen those images.

As for the book comment, saying that you can't give out free copies of books in comparison to us.
We are using the images in a strictly representative way, not only is there no profit, but it's also not keeping the company from gaining any money.
If anything, we're advertising.
Also, we didn't take any of the code or such from advanced wars, which is the important part..... you're allowed to quote a book.

Also, we didn't take any of the code or such from advanced wars, which is the important part..... you're allowed to quote a book. but it doesnt matter, the copyrights restict use of it at all without permission. if domshot has permission in a letter, it ok then. Law isnt always based on common sense. There are laws that says you cant divorce your wife then marry her grandmother because they were needed at on time. Does that law make any sense? My point. The images are like the microsft logo. YOu cant use it for anythign at all, its only microsoft's. It doesnt have to affect money.

If we do not make money from this, then we will not be sued. I took a buisness law class at school and even asked him about something like this. He said that people can do what ever they want with anything (like fanfics) just as long as they never, ever, try to turn it into a profit or claim ownership of any of the copyrighted characters/material. I like to post who owns what, not for legal reasons, but so that no one bashes me for stealing. NightPredator11 Look at them. Has that even been edited at all? The Advance Wars sprites were so ideal, there was nothing to change, only things to add. and as for the book issue you brought up, books and games are 2 different things. But still hold some similarities. If we were making games with these sprites (with out giving due ownership in the credits) AND sell them for money. It is illegal. If we were making a copy of Advance Wars (basicly recreate the game, bit by bit) to the point it's still noticably an Advance Wars game and handed it out, it would be illegal. Regardless if we made money or not. the same goes with books and movies. if we copy, word for word (or close enough) and still made no money. It is against copy right laws. if we used characters from a book (names, history and all) but used them differently (for examply: StarTreck and StarWars together, or making a "lost episode" (basicly a fanfic)) and not make any money, it is very legal. So in a nut shell. We will remain legal if
1 - we do not claim them as our own.
2 - give credit where it's due
3 - do not make an identical game of any Advance Wars (free or not)
4 - do not make a game AND make money off it using the sprites
