"It's not all that weird," Steelspark corrected. "You can be born feeling like a complete stranger around your own family, but when you're with people who have common goals as you at least you're all working in concert together. It would be stranger if it was the other way around. Anyway I've never known a family, blood or goal bound, to not have some arguments here and there. That just happens."

Her face was a bit impassive, but then she was much older and had far more time to come to grips with these sorts of things. Would she have liked for her other daughter to be around more? Sure, no reason why not. But just cause she was their mother it didn't mean she ran their lives for them. If Stella didn't think she was suited to join the pack, she wasn't going to try to argue with her.

Starblade mulled over that for a moment. It made sense, but it was a little sad all the same. She couldn't imagine not wanting to be around her mother. What would happen if Steelspark wasn't here anymore? Would she leave the pack to go stay with her father? Maybe she might have, once upon a time, but the pack was too much like family now. Was that what Steelspark was trying to get at?

"Hey, Mom? How did you and Dad meet in the first place? I mean you guys must have met each other at some point if me and Stella were born."

Steelspark couldn't help her snort. "I saved him from getting trampled by an elk. Let's just say my first impression of him was that he was an idiot. I'm not saying that our kind can't take down an elk by ourselves, but he was in a bad way. The elk spotted him and had more than enough time and room to make a counter attack."

She shook her head. "I'll give him points for determination at least, but that doesn't change the fact that I thought him quite the fool. Even after I saved him and he was all beat up he tried going after the elk again."

Starblade looked at her mother with wide eyes. Going after an elk? On his own?! She felt tense enough just going after a deer! They had long legs and pointy hooves that could slice through flesh as easily as a Fume's claws and teeth, and they were fast. Not to mention the males had horns on their heads. People always thought it would be so easy, but that was only theory. The reality was much harder!

"He did, seriously? What happened to the elk? Did you manage to kill it?"

"I got a pretty good bite on him and convinced him neither me or your dad were worth the effort. He wasn't happy about it, but he backed off. Your dad wanted to pursue it right then and there, but I made the impulsive fool wait. Wounded prey rarely survives long, and there's a lot less places to hide in the valley when you've got predators tracking you."

She let out a huff of air through her nose. Even after all this time it still made her shake her head at the impulsive male whose opinion was his strength was way too large to fit reality.

Starblade dipped her head ever so slightly. She expected nothing less from her mother, a formidable hunter. It sounded like she didn't hold her father's skills in high regard though. Starblade did have to wonder at that a bit. Was he really that bad a hunter or was he having an off day. She knew she got those every now and then, it was something that couldn't be helped. At least her pack was there to have her back, like Steelspark had been there to have Mosi's back that day.

"So what about when we were born? I mean you two weren't a couple or anything, were you?" That was another thing that had her curious. She knew her parents didn't hate each other, or at least she was sure Steelspark didn't hate Mosi, but it didn't sound like they much loved each other either.

Steelspark tossed her head, sending her bright pink hair whipping around her face. "Well it was a couple days or so after that that you two just appeared. Your dad was off somewhere, though he was still a little roughed up. I was out hunting too and hadn't been back to the den yet, though Thundercloud knew so I wouldn't freak him out thinking I'd just vanished. I was the one who found you guys first and tracked down your dad to let him know. I mean it was obvious just looking at the two of you who your parents were."

She shrugged. "I know he loved both of you quite a lot, but I don't know how he felt about tribe life. I guess it wasn't time for him to settle yet. We really didn't get to know each other all that well."

"I see," Starblade replied. She was silent for several long moments, thinking over what Steelspark had told her. "What about after we were born? I remember I was always with you or Thundercloud, and Dad and Stella only visited every now and then. Why wasn't Stella with us?"

Her sister was something of a mystery to her. Even when they had been kips she hadn't gotten to see Stella all that often. The few memories she had of her were a bit vague. It bothered her to think that someone who should be family was little more than a stranger.

Steelspark sighed, this time a little more deeply. "I don't know what to tell you, Star. I didn't get to know your sister all that much better than you did. I can only work off the impressions I got from her. In this case, I think she was just too sensitive to thrive in this land. Maybe if we had been a larger pack, but right now our numbers are such that we need everyone to pitch in to really keep our strength at its highest."

She stood up, stretching and shaking out her fur. "Don't let it bother you so much kiddo. Even if they chose not to live with us they're still family. There's nothing wrong with deciding that this life wasn't the one for them. There's no point worrying yourself sick over something that can't be changed." She gave her daughter a brief nuzzle, then turned and vanished back into the pine forest at their backs.

Starblade closed her eyes at her mother's touch and kept them closed as she listened to the soft footsteps slowly retreating. The sun began to sink below the horizon before she finally moved, standing and copying her mother's movements of stretching and shaking out her fur. She winced a little as she did so. She had been sitting there for so long that her muscles had gone stiff. Contemplation hurt sometimes.

She turned her head to look back towards the direction of the valley, then faced the forest and loped off back to the pack den. Steelspark was right. There was no sense worrying about it. Mosi and Stella would always hold a spot in her heart, but as her feet touched the smooth rock and familiar smells seeped into her nose, she knew for certain who her family truly was.
