River doesn't go with anyone on the crew. There isn't anyone on the ship with potential for her. First, all the men are way too old for her. Second, Jayne is crude, Mal is like a father (and already has Inara as a love interest), and Simon is her BROTHER. (and shepherd, again, is just too old...and he would never be interested in someone like her, much less her interested in him). If they ever wanted to put someone with River, they'd have to bring on a new character, someone similar to Simon, but much more sensitive to other's feelings. And probably more decisive than him too. Someone who isn't afraid to say what he has to and do what he has to.

This is true. Also, Shepard isn't allowed to get married, so dating out for the question of him.

I think she looked at him as a fatherly or brotherly sort, at very least someone she truly respected.
