Yeah, there's a section at the back of the first volume of manga with early sketches of several of the main characters.
There's a very awesome of of Kaolla that I used as the inspiration for Alässe Naîlo, my southern elf sorceress in D&D, along with early versions of Keitaro, Naru, Motoko, Shinobu, Kitsune, Kaolla and Haruka. It also details early personality traits: Kaolla was originally going to be the money-grubber, but they switched that to Kitsune after making her too old to be a schoolgirl.
Haruka was originally a single mother, Motoko was afraid of lightning, Naru lost her memory and Shinobu just looked different.

I like her Sketch at the end of the manga, it also has the other charcters too( love hina manga no.1).
