I'm not sure steampunk is exactly the right word to describe Firefly, but then again, I'm not sure what the right word is. I'm not sure if it falls under the category of dieselpunk or cyberpunk, either, but whatever.
I'm mainly just saying this to steal the moment from anyone who might feel the need to really get their dander up about it.

@Raincrow: Right. I guess I was sort of thinking about the steampunk genre conventions in Firefly and making an unfounded leap to actually calling it steampunk, more or less because I can't think of any other good examples past, say, something by Jules Verne or H.G. Wells, though their works were considered futuristic at the time they were written. I apologize to all the Firefly fans that may have been miffed by my incorrect categorization.

I think Firefly would be considered a "space western," so I don't think it's anything-punk, especially as the technology isn't the focus of the plotlines.

Yeah, I would just call Firefly a space western -- and, really, "dieselpunk"? I turn away from genre labels for two minutes and we're adding more to the endless list of whateverpunks writers like to adjective their stories with.
So I can be on-topic: R&N would be Mirror's Edge meets Jak 2 (for storyverse elements) meets Resident Evil 4 (main character infected with a parasite he has to remove in the course of his "mission") meets Neuromancer (mood and grittiness moreso than technology level) meets Severance Package (small cast of characters, fast pacing, sweet and meek person turning out to be insane). With a bit of Outlaw Star for Gabe fitting in a suitcase.

Dieselpunk has been a genre at least since I was in middleschool, albeit not necessarily a popular one. The movie Casshern could possibly fall under that label.
