Sandpaw nodded and wrapped the pultice around Icefoot's sore paw. She took a deep breath to clear her nose of the strong smelling herbs. "Anything else?" She asked, looking around to see if anything else was wrong with the den.

Brookeye winced, seein Icefoot's paw. "StarClan, that must hurt." She murmured, then looked at Icefoot. "Are you hungry? Would you like a mouse or a squirrel?"

Flamekit looked around the camp. He was wondering about his apprenticeship, he knew it should be coming up soon. Just the thought about that got him excited.

Icefoot shook her head at Sandpaw. "No, everthing is good now, thanks." The elder's ears turned towards Brookeye as the medicince cat commented on her paw. "It sure did when it happened, I thought I was done for. It doesn't work very well anymore...but it's alright, as long as you two are around." Icefoot flicked her light cream tail and purred slightly. This whole conversation had brought her back to when she was deputy, when she would lead patrols and fight with Knottedtail and Eagleheart by her side. The trees were greener, the prey was juicier- those were the days. Icefoot returned her attention to Brookeye "No, I'm full. But even if I was hungery, I can still fetch prey by myself you know." Icefoot added, She had to maintain some independance, what with the clan always taking care of her and all.

Sandpaw looked at Icefoot questioningly. What was she thinking about? Sandpaw was never one for subtlety, and because her mentor was finally on the road to recovery and no longer in life-threatening danger, she could finally act her own age again. ”Hey Icefoot, what’cha thinkin’ about?

Icefoot purred at Sandpaw's question, as if the apprentice had just told a joke. "Just thinking about the past, times before you were born. I used to be deputy, you know? But every cat grows old, and my run in with the twoleg monster pretty much sealed my retirement." Iceflower nodded "I may have recovered, if I was younger...but I guess being a leader was not Starclan's plan for me. And thank goodness- to be honest, I was scared to death of it"
Icefoot purred happily and settled down into the moss. It had been too long since she told a story. "Diamondstar became deputy when I retired. Everyone was shocked- She was so young at the time. Most cats suspected Knottedtail would be chosen, he was older and a natural leader. In the end, though, Diamondstar was the right choice. Knottedtail was much too eager to fight, and Diamondstar is a swift decision maker, and she adapted quickly to her new role. She surprised many cats." Icefoot wondered what Sandpaw would think about her story. She did not come to listen to her oftain, like some other kits and apprentices did- or used to do. Most were warriors now.

Ivyleaf sighed, placing her head on her paws. "I sort of remember that. Very, very faintly, when I was a kit, I remember a big commotion when you were hit. I don't remember thinking anything about that other than 'I wonder if the medicine cat will let me watch her treat you.'" She shuddered. "I always fear retiring. I do not know why, I know when I'm older, I might not be able to do my duty as a medicine cat so well, but I suppose it's because, when my mother died, it was only a day after the ceremony she became an elder."
