I suppose it could start in Ireland, but it really starts with when the elves were killed.
So then, approximately 50 BCE Julius Ceasar killed off the elves in the Gallic Wars.
Their ghosts wandered back to their homes in Ireland, and eventually became a little bored. Every now and then a family would pop up and the Faeries would watch them, ((Elves are a type of Faerie, but you already know that)) and when one would die the Faerie would shriek and mourn.
Something you should also already know, but the elves were called Sidhes, and the things that cried and mourned during Irish deaths were called Bean-Sidhes.
You guessed it, Sidhe is pronounced "shee", a name that most Faeries call themselves.
This is why it's offensive to call Faeries by that specific gender.
