I work at medieval faires, and after my performances I would hide behind the maile tent and make stuff, byzantine is my favorite
What do you do at the festivals?
Blech. Byzantine.

@Liana-Tigra - That's how my dad and I both started out making maille. He'd get dowel rods and fencing wire and turn the rings with a power drill. Tools? A couple pairs of pliers! That's all I use, for the most part. Now that I'm making smaller rings, I have a wooden dowl rod and some wire-cutters. Still relatively cheap.

I feel better now! More maillers.

It takes time to get your hands strong enough. I still can't do it for more than 3 hours. What did you make?

Wow, those look great! As good as the chainmaille I've seen at the Renaissance faires, even! How long did it take you to learn how to do that?

If I started out with bigger rings, not too long for a new weave. It's pretty much the same concept once you get a couple of the basic weaves down. I'd say... hmm... A couple hours for the basics when you put all the time together. Maybe five or six when you put the time together for every weave I've learned or relearned.

@Midori Yume- I had gloves when I first started out. Now I can't find them, but it's ok. I'm building up some pretty good calluses on my hands, and with all the work I've done, it takes a few hours for my hands to wear out. I'm looking for some cheap leather gloves I can cut just the fingertips out of so I'll not stab my fingers. I have several scars from run-away pliers.

Lol, I do stunt combat, there is a live action battle chessboard, and I fight on it. It was a blast, I am the blood pack queen!! Anyway, I'll have to post a picture of my byzantine, it's BIG, becaused I used big rings, but I love it, it's gorgeous.

I've never actually gotten to see a live chess game. I'm going to this year, though, even if I'm the only one that goes to this festival.

Byz. is a gorgeous weave, and everyone seems to love it. I just hate making it. It's so... easy! Twas one of the first things I learned and now I just get bored with it. I should love to see your byzantine. You can post it here, if you like.

Nice. Did you solder the joins together? If so, nicely done. I do metal/Jewelry work myself. I like soldering, but sometimes I mess it up.

No, the rings are just bent closed. Since most of them are saw cut, the ends fit together perfectly.

I'm a mailler! ( ><)9
I like your pieces very much. :3
A few of my things are on Mailleartisans.org, but I haven't updated anything since about last August, so it's all still really newbed out stuff. xD
What AR's and metals did you make your pieces out of?

PostPosted: Fri May 23, 2008 7:31 am

I'm not sure the ARs of them, but they're mostly stainless steel, bright aluminium, or enameled copper.

I should love to see some of your work! It's always good to find another mailler out there.

Good metals to be working with. :3
I personally haven't done anything in Stainless yet, I ordered some BA rings from TRL and those lasted me quite a while.
I'm currently working on a 9.5mm 14g Galvy hauberk, but it's gotten pretty slow going.
Also, what kind of saw jig do you have set up? I have a rather unique saw jig myself, but unfortunately, I need a special dremel to actually use it. I haven't been able to scrounge up the $70 bucks I need to order the gosh-dern thing.

In the MailleArtisans.org Gallery, you can find me under the username "Eco".
Aw, shucks, I'll just link ya'. :3
[x]
The pieces I have are so old and pathetic, I'm almost embarrassed to share them. xD
Yet, I'm too lazy to update it.
I might actually get to that tonight... >->;

EDIT: Okay, I've updated a few things. MailleArtisans has a 100k upload limit, so I just put it all on Photobucket.

Oh, dear God... an Aura necklace. I've made one and I'll kill someone if I have to make another!

Pop tabs? How many of those did it take for the vest? That is awesome. Were they hard to work with? I've wanted to make something small with them for a while but I don't really want to get all scratched up...

xD
The Aura Necklace really wasn't too bad. Just boring as -insert word of choice-

The pop tabs don't actually scratch you up. You just have to take off the little piece that actually connects to the can. Wiggling the tab straight off the can is the best way to get them off, no pulling or twisting required.
I'm guessing the vest took about two thousand tabs, but I don't know exactly.
And no, I didn't collect all those myself.
eBay. X3

I looked through all your Deviant Art images... I can humbly say that I think you're a better mailler than I am. xD
I'm always fighting my ADD so I never finish anything.
