The Mafia Induction Oath

The induction ceremony was conducted by the boss of the family. The underboss, the consiglieri, and the rest of the top ranking capi in the family were also present.

The group would hold hands that formed a circle. They would then break the circle, get the new inductees into the circle and form the circle again. That symbolized that the family has opened up and accepted the newly inductees into the family.

During the induction ceremony, the inductees trigger finger is cut. They take blood from the wound. A holy card with an image of the family's patron saint is burned on his hand.

An example of one induction oath is like this:

"I (NAME GIVEN) want to enter into this organization to protect my family and to protect my friends. I swear not to divulge this secret and to obey with love and omerta. As burns this saint so will burn my soul. I enter alive into this organization and leave it dead."

Omerta - A code of silence. A vow never to reveal any Mafia secrets or members under threat of torture or death.

* Total obedience to the boss.

* Assistance to any befriended Mafia faction, no questions asked.

* Avenge any attack on members of the family, because an attack on one is an attack on all.

* Avoid any and all contact with the authorities.

Family Ranks

Boss - The head of the family, usually reigning as a dictator, sometimes called the "don", or "godfather". The Boss receives a cut of every operation taken on by every member of his family. Depending on the Family, the Boss may be chosen by a vote from the Caporegimes of the family. In the event of a tie, the Underboss must vote.

Underboss - The Underboss, usually appointed by the Boss, is the second in command of the family. The Underboss is considered the Boss that is in charge of all of the other Capos, who is controlled by the Boss. The Underboss is usually first in line to become Acting Boss if the Boss is imprisoned or dies.

Consigliere - Consigliere is an advisor to the family. They are often low profile gangsters that can be trusted. They are used as a mediator of disputes or representatives or aids in meetings with other Families. They often keep the Family looking as legitimate as possible, and are, themselves, legitimate apart from some minor gambling or loan sharking. Often Consiglieres are lawyers or stock brokers, are trusted and have a close friendship or relationship with the Don. They usually do not have crew of their own, but still wield great power in the Family. They are also often the liaison between the Don and important 'bought' figures, such as politicians or Judges.

Capo - (sometimes called a Captain) is in charge of a crew. There are usually four to six crews in each family, possibly even seven to nine crews, each one consisting of up to ten Soldiers. Capos run their own small family, but must follow the limitations and guidelines created by the Boss, as well as pay him his cut of their profits. Capos are nominated by the Underboss, but typically chosen by the Boss himself.

Soldier - Soldiers are members of the family, and can only be of Sicilian background. Soldiers start as Associates that have proven themselves. When the books are open, meaning that there is an open spot in the family, a Capo (or several Capos) may recommend an up-and-coming Associate to be a new member. In the case that there is only one slot and multiple recommendations, the Boss will decide. The new member usually becomes part of the Capo's crew that recommended him.

Associate - An Associate is not a member of the mob, but more of an errand boy. They're usually a go-between or sometimes deal in drugs to keep the heat off the actual members. In other cases, an associate might be a corrupt labor union delegate or businessman. Non-Sicilians will never go any further than this.

20s Fashion

Men

With the suits, colored shirts of putty, peach, blue-gray and cedar were worn. Shaped silk ties in small geometric patterns or diagonal stripes were secured with tie pins. Black bowler hats completed the ensemble.

The tail coat was considered appropriate formal evening wear, accompanied by a top hat. Starched white shirts with pleated yokes were expected with the tail coat, although bow ties and shirts with white wing collars were also seen. Tuxedos were increasing in popularity but were not yet completely acceptable.

Black patent-leather shoes were popular during this era and often appeared with formal evening wear. Casual clothing demanded two-tone shoes in white and tan, or white and black. Fringed tongues on Oxfords and brogues were seen frequently. Lace-up style shoes were most in demand.

Flannel was originally made as a heavy, comfortable, soft and slightly napped wool cloth. Gray was the most popular color, and thus gray flannel trousers became known as “grayers”. Other popular colors were white, beige and stripes. Flannel trousers were traditionally worn in warm weather.

Women

Clothing: Dresses were knee-length and straight line. The silhouette tended to be rather boyish with little to no emphasis on curves or bust. They actually went out of their way to play down the hourglass figure (women had just thrown away the corset not long before then). Necklines were often plunging and dresses were embellished with beads or sequins. The fringe dress is a staple for 1920's style fancy dress.

Accessories: Long pearl necklaces and lavalieres the longer, the better, Rolled stockings & rouged knees, Cloche (bell-shaped) hats Scarves tied around the head, "Headache" bands (large, jeweled headbands), Feather boas, and feathered hair clips/headbands.

Makeup: Heavy eyeliner, long lashes and dark lipstick.

Name: Carlo Gambino
Title: Boss
Family: Gambino
Family Business: Labor racketeering, Pornography, Gambling, Loansharking, Extortion, Solid and Toxic waste dumping violations, Hijacking, Pier thefts and Fencing.
Living Local: Midtown
Age: 43
Physical Description: A diminutive man with small eyes and a large nose, Average height man. Baby face. Slicked back hair. Usually wore sharp suits.
Weapons: Time Bomb & Pistol
Bio: He was a native of the town Caccamo in Palermo, Sicily, he was born to a family that belonged to the Honored Society for centuries. The Honored Society was slightly more complicated than the Black Hand of America, which was often confused with the American Mafia. The Black Hand, much like the pre-1920's Mafia, was a highly disorganized version of the real European mafia. Once Benito Mussolini chased a great deal of real mafiosi out of Italy, one of the American-Italians who benefited from the new, better-organized Mafia was Carlo Gambino. Gambino began carrying out murder orders for the Society in his teens and at the age of 19, he became a "made man".
Gambino entered the United States as an illegal immigrant on a shipping boat. He ate nothing but anchovies and wine during the trip, and joined his cousins the Castellanos in New York City. Because he was a political refugee, he never had to obtain American citizenship. During the prohibition era, he worked as a bootlegger, driver and gun man for various families.
Carlo Gambino had a relatively peaceful reign. As boss, he ruled the family through relatives and even brought his son Tommy into the family. Gambino disapproved of publicity and drugs. Any member who was caught dealing drugs was murdered. As legend has it, he was one of the most respected and feared bosses of the 20th century.

Name: Giuseppe "Joseph/Joe" Bonanno
Title: Boss
Family: Bonanno
Family Business: Gambling, Loan-sharking, Racketeering, and Control of prostitution.

Bio: Born in Brooklyn, he returned to Italy at age 11 with his Father. Four years later at age 15 his father died leaving him an orphan. At age 21 he joined an Anti-Fascist group through his University and due to an arrest warrent he fled to America again. Working his way up through the families he became the Boss of the Bonanno Family.
Bonanno was at the time the youngest of the bosses of the Five Families at 26 years old. The Bonanno Family was considered the closest knit of the Five Families due to the fact that it was made up of mostly Sicilians from the seaside town where Bonanno was born – Castellamare del Golfo, Sicily. Bonanno strongly believed blood relations and a strict Sicilian upbringing could be the only way to hold the traditional values of La Cosa Nostra together.
The Bonanno crime family's underbosses were Frank Garofalo, John Bonventre and Carmine Galante. Although the family was smaller than the other New York organizations, it was more efficiently operated, and there was virtually no internal dissention and little harassment from other gangs or the law.

********************

Name: Joe Profaci
Title: Boss
Family: Profaci
Family Business: Labour rackets, Extortion, Gambling, Hijacking, Loan sharking, and Importing heroin
Living Local: Brooklyn
Age: 35
Physical Description: Tall, well built man. Usually always wore a tie.
Weapons: Revolver & Street Sweeper
Bio: Born in Sicily, he immigrated to America at the age of 30. 4 years later he was made the boss of the Profaci family.
Like many mobsters, Profaci had many legitimate businesses, such as importing olive oil, which lead to him being referred to as the "Olive Oil King."
Profaci was a devout Catholic who donated a great deal to Catholic charities. Less admirably, however, he once had two thieves tortured to death for stealing from a local church.
He was reportedly despised by many of his underlings because he implemented a "slush" fund, whereby members of the family had to give him $25 per month that would supposedly go towards supporting mobsters' families should the mobster go to prison. Those who didn't pay were usually murdered, as was anyone who disagreed with Profaci on any other matters. However, Profaci simply added it to the other huge amounts of money obtained through his criminal enterprise. He lived a life of luxury; at the height of his power, Profaci had a home set in a 328-acre (133-hectare) estate with its own private airport.

********************

Name: Gaetano "Tommy" Lucchese
Title: Boss
Family: Lucchese
Family Business: Controlling Teamsters unions, Workers' co-operatives and Trade associations, and racketeering at the new Airport.
Living Local: New Jersey
Age: 47
Physical Description: 5'2", with a slight build, but any idea that this may make him less of a threat was quickly dispelled by his ruthless use of extreme violence. He lost a finger following an industrial accident in 1915, which earned him the nickname "Three-Finger Brown".
Weapons: Garotte, Baseball Bat & Machine Gun
Bio: As a young man he racked up a long list of arrests including some for homicide, but he managed to avoid conviction in every case, but for a single grand larceny charge in the early 1920s.
Tommy Gagliano & Tommy Lucchese, the "Two Tommys", joined a number of other top Mafia figures in reorganizing the structure of the mob. Thus were the Five Families to become the pillars on which the strength of the American Mafia was based, and the new head of the branch was Tommy Gagliano, with Gaetano "Tommy" Lucchese as his underboss. The pair led the family into profitable areas of the trucking and clothing industries, and looked after their men in a way that other mob bosses would have done well to replicate.
When Gagliano died, Lucchese, who had been loyal to his boss from beginning to end, took over as boss, and carried on the traditions Gagliano had established, making the family which now bore his name one of the most profitable in New York.
He was popular and well-liked among his men, and known to value their welfare highly. Lucchese also enjoyed close relations with mayors and other politicians. He ultimately became one of the most well-respected Mafia bosses of the era.

********************

Name: Vito Genovese

Family: Genovese
Family Business: Gambling, The Italian lottery, Robbery, Narcotics, and Extortion
Living Local: Hell's Kitchen

Bio: After taking orders from Luciano to do a hit, which caused his exile, Genovese began a murder spree to gain new status in the underworld, taking advantage of Luciano being in exile in Italy. Facing a murder charge, Genovese was forced to flee to Italy as well. When he later returned to the States, all the witnesses to his murder spree had disappeared. He remained a free man.
He gathered most of the Boss's of various Mafias together for a large meeting in hopes of taking Luciano's place as head of the family. The cops raided the meeting and many Boss's were detained. Despite the shambolic end to the meeting, Genovese is too powerful, influential and feared to eliminate and finally manages to reach the summit of power in the former Luciano Crime Family which now takes his name.
