SinfulGuillotine
Honestly, Purgatory is probably one of the reasons why I originally returned to Catholicism after several years of spiritual searching. It just makes sense to me. Most people aren't entirely good or evil in nature or in actions. We all have the potential for both, and most people's lives reflect at least a little of each. The problem I had with the idea of Heaven and Hell for a while was that it was too black and white - it separated people into either good or bad, when most people are somewhere in between. Purgatory adds that grey area that I feel is needed to exist in reality. You're not so good and pure that you get to be with God in paradise right off the bat, but you're also not so evil that you deserve punishment for eternity. You get a chance to atone for your unresolved bad actions, suffer some punishment, and then go to God all clean and shiney.

To quote my priest, "Not only do I believe in Purgatory, I'm kind of counting on it."

Hmm, doesn't purgatory fire hurt more than hell fire? It's suppose to cleanse us when we die, right?

I don't know about hurting more, but it's definately painful. However, I'd be willing to go through it to get to Heaven. Yes, it is supposed to cleanse us.

I understand everyone is sticking their ground, but every Priest makes an oath upon Ordination, and on their Induction to any service (their Induction to the role of Parish Priest for a particular church, for example) that they believe EVERYTHING the Catholic Church holds to be Doctrine. Purgatory is in that Doctrine. If a Priest does not believe in Purgatory and makes that oath, they're mortally sinning. It's a big lie to tell, and it deceives the laity and clergy of a whole Diocese, a whole Archdiocese, the whole Church Militant, the whole Church. That's a side issue, but there is no such thing as a little white lie when it comes to your core beliefs.

And to go further with Barnabus' point, if you were killed before baptism (with comes from times of Roman persecution), you'd be "baptised by blood".

On the point of Purgatory, Jesus+ died on the Cross, in order to make heaven an opportunity. It's not that He wasn't perfect enough to die for us, but rather, that we would ******** Heaven up if we went there after death. Say, for example, that I died from cardiac failure now (which is very likely, due to over-frying the English breakfast last night; yes, I know it was Friday - my bad). I lie, I swear, I frequently think and talk badly of people, I have some sort of anger problem, I seek selfish desires, and a lot more. If I went to Heaven straight off, I'd blemish it. It's like when you paint when you're really little, and you have the water pot to clean your brush. The water is all clear, it reflects light and splits it into a rainbow, but when you dip the coloured brush in, it all goes murky. If you but a selfish soul into Heaven, Heaven becomes imperfect. Logic tells us Heaven has to be perfect (due to Sacred Scripture). So, presuming (and you should never do that, but this is an example) I don't go to Hell, because perhaps I am not that bad, and I really want to be with God, then the other option is Heaven. However, I'm selfish and sinful, and I will defile Heaven's perfection. This is where Purgatory comes in. Otherwise, the system is illogical, and has a bloody huge loophole.

Additionally, we suffer pain to make ourselves acceptable for Heaven because our selfishness is an addiction to pleasing ourselves. You don't go cold turkey - it doesn't work. You have to stop your addiction, and when you've had an addiction all your life, coming off hurts. Imagine you became addicted to heroin because your mother took it while pregnant. That is a HARD habit to break. As it is with selfishness.

I will try to make better sense of my thoughts later. rolleyes

And on the topic of words that never had sexual meaning having one now, has anyone seen the viagra ads using the word "machine" in their junk box?

ya purgatory is basically heavens back door. for only those pure from sin can enter through the "front door" like jesus and God and maybe marry? not sure on her. but ya its punishment for sin but at the same time its forgiveness of sin.

Purgatory is one of the things that makes sense to me. Personally, I don't think God would be that cruel to send all who don't believe in him to hell. My dad, well, we tried for twenty years and he isn't believing in God. When I was a little kid, I put two and two together and figured out he was going to hell (yeah, grew up Methodist). I don't think I should enter heaven in like this. I am not perfect, and there are many things I need to change.

I am going to get flamed but:
There is no Purgatory. I was taught all about that stuff, and I do not believe in it.
If Jesus died on the corss, why do we need to go to Purgatory,. accepcting him into our hearts and being Baptized takes away sin by cleasing out hearts.
So why would Jesus do all that if we have to sit around in Purgatory anyways?
Show me somehting in the NEW Testament, AFTER Jesus was risen, that has to do with Purgatory.
Plus, most of the Fathers I have met don't believe in it either. It makes no sence.
That's just my two cents, don't worry about it. ^^
I am prepared for flaming. Dx

No flaming at all!! biggrin I'm so glad someone else thinks this!! biggrin .

I'm pretty sure that Purgatory was never mentioned in the Bible. So I don't know if it exists.

I mean, if it did exist, I wouldn't see that as a bad thing, just a waiting place. But it seems silly that you have to wait for people to pray for you. I'm sure there are a ton of people who have died who haven't had any prayers said for them (well...not technically true, because I always try to pray for those who don't have others praying for them), but anyway the point is that it seems unequal, and unecessary. The prays of others, aka other peoples actions, shouldn't get you into heaven. It should depend on you.

When I was little I always pictured it like a school... like catechism. You get taught things before you get let into heaven, just like before you make a sacrament. I always pictured it as a nice place to be. It sort of makes sense after what other's have said, to have a purification place, but then again, why is it needed? Why do we go there to fix ourselves? We should be doing that now... we're not perfect, and can't fix everything, but I'm still skeptical on that...

On The Doctrine of Purgatory
by Saint Francis de Sales (1567-1622), Bishop and Doctor of the Church

http://www.catholicapologetics.info/apologetics/general/purgatory.htm

there has never been any saint throughout history, no doctor of the church, who did not believe in purgatory,
read the writings of Saint Francis de Sales, or any other saint for that matter,
don't base your beliefs off of what you do not understand, learn with what God has given you, He gave the saints to us, they are great because they lived to do the will of God, and He used them completely.

"And where has your charity of heart gone now for your relations and friends passed on into purgatory? Were I to reveal to you how many are now chained by your lack of prayers in purgatory, would you be moved with pity for them if I could show you how they beg and thirst for you to release them?" - Jesus, September 7, 1979

the only reason i care so much whether someone believes in purgatory or not is because i know how much our prayers do for them, and one person not believing in purgatory only means one less person praying for them...purgatory is in the bible, so much so that i am baffled to why anyone could claim it is not,
the only thing i can think of, is either they do not read the bible, or they try to interpret it on their own, and do not seek the interpretations from the writings of the saints.
read that book i linked there, and you will see...

you know what, don't even worry about it that way, just worry about your life right now,
the more you live your life the way you're supposed to, and if you use the sacraments as much as possible, then you're time in purgatory may be very short,
also remember that the more you suffer here on earth, the less you will suffer in purgatory, so every pain and suffering now is a good thing,
well not just for that reason, our suffering is good for much more then we are even aware of,
so maybe you would like to read this article...

SUFFERING

How to Make the Greatest Evil in
Our Lives Our Greatest Happiness

by Fr. Paul O'Sullivan, O.P.

Suffering is the great problem of human life. We all have to suffer. Sometimes small sorrows, sometimes greater ones fall to our share. We shall now tell our readers how to avoid much of this suffering, how to lessen all suffering and how to derive great benefits from every suffering we may have to bear.

The reason why suffering appears so hard is that, first of all, we are not taught what suffering is. Secondly, we are not taught how to bear it. Thirdly, we are not taught the priceless value of suffering.

This is due to the incomprehensible neglect on the part of our teachers.

It is surprising how easily some people bear great sufferings; whereas, others get excited even at the smallest trouble.

The simple reason is that some have been taught all about suffering; others have not.

SUFFERING IS NOT THE EVIL WE THINK IT IS

First of all, then, suffering is not simply an evil, for no one suffered more than the Son of God Himself, more than His Blessed Mother or more than the Saints. Every suffering comes from God. It may appear to come to us by chance or accident or from someone else, but in reality, every suffering comes to us from God. Nothing happens to us without His wish or permission. Not even a hair falls from our heads without His consent.

Why does God allow us to suffer? Simply because He is asking us to take a little share in His Passion. What appears to come by chance or from someone else always comes because God allows it.

Every act in Our Lord's Life was a lesson for us. The greatest act in His life was His Passion. This, then, is the greatest lesson for us. It teaches us that we too must suffer.

God suffered all the dreadful pains of His Passion for each one of us. How can we refuse to suffer a little for love of Him?

SUFFERING IS THE GOLD IN OUR LIVES

Secondly, if we accept the suffering He sends us and offer them in union with His sufferings, we receive the greatest rewards. Five minutes' suffering borne for love of Jesus is of greater value to us than years and years of pleasure and joy. The Saints tell us that if we patiently bear our sufferings, we merit the crown of martyrdom.

Moreover, suffering borne patiently brings out all that is good in us. Those who have suffered are usually the most charming people.

If we bear these facts clearly in mind, it certainly becomes much easier to suffer.

GOD ALWAYS GIVES STRENGTH TO BEAR OUR SUFFERINGS

Thirdly, when God gives us any suffering, He always gives us strength to bear it, if we only ask Him. Many, instead of asking for His help, get excited and revolt. It is this excitement and impatience that really make suffering hard to bear.

Consider that we are now speaking of all suffering, even the most trifling ones. All of us have little troubles, pains, disappointments, every day of our lives. All these, if borne for love of God, obtain for us, as we have said, the greatest rewards.

HOW TO BEAR SUFFERING

Even the greater sufferings that may fall to our share from time to time become easy to bear if we accept them with serenity and patience. What really makes suffering difficult to bear is our own impatience, our revolt, our refusal to accept it. This irritation increases our sufferings a hundred fold and, besides, robs us of all the merit we could have gained thereby.

We see some people pass through a tempest of suffering with the greatest calm and serenity; whereas, others get irritated at the slightest annoyance or disappointment. We can all learn this calm and patience. It is the secret of happiness.

An eminent physician, in a conference which he gave to distinguished scientists and fellow doctors, told them that he owed all his great success in life to the simple fact that he had corrected his habit of impatience and annoyance, which had been destroying all his energy and activity.

Everyone, we repeat, without exception, can learn this calm and serenity.

PENANCE

We must all do penance for our sins. If we do not, we shall have long years of suffering in the awful fires of Purgatory. This fire is just the same as the fire of Hell.

Now, if we offer our sufferings the very little ones as well as the greater ones-in union with the sufferings of Jesus Christ, we are doing the easiest and best penance we can perform. We may thus deliver ourselves entirely from Purgatory, While at the same time gaining the greatest graces and blessings.

Let us remember clearly that:

1) Sufferings come from God for our benefit.

2) When we are in the state of grace, we derive immense merit from every suffering borne patiently, even the little sufferings of our daily lives.

3) God will give us abundant strength to bear our sufferings if we only ask Him.

4) If we bear our sufferings patiently, they lose their sting and bitterness.

5) Above all, every suffering is a share in the Passion of Our Lord.

6) By our sufferings, we can free ourselves in great part, or entirely, from the pains of Purgatory.

7) By bearing our sufferings patiently, we win the glorious crown of martyrdom.

Of course, we may do all in our power to avoid or lessen our sufferings, but we cannot avoid all suffering. Therefore, it is clearly necessary for us to learn how to bear them.

In a word, we must understand clearly that if we remain calm, serene and patient, suffering loses all its sting, but the moment we get excited, the smallest suffering increases a hundred fold.

It is just as if we had a sore arm or leg and rubbed it violently; it would become irritated and painful; whereas, if we touch it gently, we soothe the irritation.

We suffer from ill-health, from pains, headaches, rheumatism, arthritis, from accidents, from enemies. We may have financial difficulties. Some suffer for weeks in their homes, some in hospitals or nursing homes. In a word, we are in a vale of tears. Almighty God could have saved us from all suffering, but He did not do so because He knows in His infinite goodness that suffering is good for us.

PRAYER

We have a great, great remedy in our hands, that is, prayer. We should pray earnestly and constantly asking God to help us to suffer, to console us. or if it pleases Him. to deliver us from suffering. This is all, all important.

A very eminent doctor, in an able article he recently published in the secular press, says that "Prayer is the greatest power in the world."

He says, "I and my colleagues frequently see that many of our patients, whom we have failed to cure or whose pains we have failed to alleviate, have cured themselves by prayer. I speak now not of the prayers of holy people, but the prayers of ordinary Christians."

We should above all pray to Our Lady of Sorrows in all our troubles. We should ask her, by the oceans of sorrow she felt during the Passion of Our Lord, to help us.

God gave her all the immense graces necessary to make her the perfect Mother of God, but He also gave her all the graces, the tenderness, the love necessary to be our most perfect and loving Mother. No mother on earth ever loved a child as Our Blessed Lady loves us. Therefore, in all our troubles and sorrows, let us go to Our Blessed Lady with unbounded confidence.

THE MEMORARE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. To thee do I come, before thee I kneel, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer them. Amen.

ok, i hope this helps you.

I do not mean to flame, so please do not take this in a negative view. Just trying to shed some light on the subject.

There is a purgatory. Many people after they are baptized continue living, and thus since last I checked a good portion of us are human and weak. We are prone to sin again. We are wiped of Adam and Eve's sin through the waters of baptism, but sin still enters our lives in the form of original and deadly sin, and they leave deadly marks on our souls. Even if we accept Jesus into our hearts and minds. That is why we have sacraments like Reconciliation and the holy eucharist.

Now heaven is a place of perfection. However it is, whatever it looks like, one can not say that heaven is not perfect for what can be better than being with God in full spirit?

How can we be with him if our souls are not fully clean?

As for it being in the Bible, to be honest I have never read the whole thing. So I can not say that. But a lot of things are not in the Bible. The Trinity, The seven deadly sins and I know there are more but I can not pull them out of my head now.
