Okay....first post made good points. However, I have to contest some of them.
Let's see if I can do this in order and somewhat coherently as my inner fangirl is screaming obsceities.
Is it his looks? Yes. I don't care how old he is. Keanu Reeves is my other favorite actor..he just turned 41 in September and to me he is still gorgeous. Yeah, James has on odd, rather bony facial structure. But in my personal opinion uncommon good looks are the best kind.
About his personality...in the very beginning he was a socially unaccepted, good-natured, well-meaning fool. Call me crazy but I go for those types. And his poetry wasn't that bad! Or maybe it was so bad that it was charming in the effort. So...he was sired by Drusilla, and he became an evil murderous b*****d. *searches her mind for a quote* "Um...hello? VAMPIRE?!" He was supposed to be an evil murderous b*****d. But he was a clever, witty, and so-sexy-you-can't-help-but-fall-for-it murderous b*****d. Plus, up until the point that Dru left him, Spike cared for her through all her violent insanity. Love is love, even if it between evils. And he genuinely loved Buffy...after he got past wanting to kill her, of course. AS to his stint in the basement...perhaps I as a female am biased...but yes, rape is indeed worse than murder. And before that happened he was in Sunnydale High's basement being tortured by his soul on all the things he'd done before that. (Although the railroad spikes were definetly cool. I'm macabre like that.) And you have to admit he was way more clever and funny than Angel. He had some of the best one-liners in either show. Who remembers Five Words? "Out For A Walk. b***h." Angel's thing was to be brooding and serious. That gets old way too quickly. But one could always count on Spike to be entertaining as the resident smart-arsed Brit.
To the next point...If Spike would have 'reformed completely', he would have stopped fighting. Period. He would have gone back to being the simpering poet and had no worth either to the Scoobies as a fighter or to the show as sarcastic comic relief. And I don't care who you are...if you come across a leather jacket that nice for free, you're not giving it up for a damn thing. If you want to get really deep & metaphorical, maybe Spike kept the jacket as a weight on his back to remind him of what he'd done to that slayer? There is also the matter of self-defense. He's a vamp, she's a vamp slayer. What kind of idiot would go , "oh, it's the natural order, I'll just let her kill me 'cos she's the good guy *dust*" Same thing with her son. The crazy fool just came at him, and if you noticed, Spike spared that crazy fool's life. He could very easily have snapped Wood's neck but DIDN'T even though he was trying to kill Spike.
Angel, on the other hand, isn't any better a man just because he's suffered with his soul longer. He did horrible things too; some might argue the acts he committed upon his family, especially his child sister, were far worse than anything Spike did. And that's when he wasn't acting with Darla as well. It got far worse then. In the end, Spike saved Buffy and all the potentials when he could have turned and fled with them, while with Angel's entire series, no matter what it was just another job, just another misfortune. Furthermore, Spike never blamed his evil on being another person, he never gave it another name. Every evil thing Angel did was blamed on 'Angelus', but Spike was Spike no matter what and that acceptance alone proves he truly atoned for his atrocities. Not to mention he got over it more quickly which meant that his coping skills and his ability to function when Buffy and the Potentials needed him was much better than Angel's. Angel's solution to every problem was to leave, to run away. But Spike stuck it out no matter what and came through in the end.
And that is why I love Spike.

I like him more than Angel, because he has the ability to love with or without a soul. Angel looses his soul, and the first thing he thinks about is torturing and killing the woman he loved while he had a soul. The First described Angel the best in Amends, season 3. It said that Angel is different to other demons. They kill to feed, but he takes pleasure in it. When he does have a soul, I just found him boring. He's too broody, and he doesn't have much of a personality. This is my absolute favourite Spike quote from Touched, Season 7. It's the quote that gave me absolutely no doubt that Spike really does love Buffy. Quote: You listen to me. I've been alive a bit longer than you, and dead a lot longer than that. I've seen things you couldn't imagine, and done things I'd prefer you didn't. I don't exactly have a reputation for being a thinker; I follow my blood, which does not always rush in the direction of my head. So I've made a lot of mistakes. A lot of wrong bloody calls. A hundred plus years, only one thing I've ever been sure of. You. Look at me. I'm not asking you foranything. When I tell you that I love you, it's not because I want you, or 'cause I can't have you -- it has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try... I've seen your strength, and your kindness, I've seen the best and the worst of you and I understandwith perfect clarity exactly what you are. You are a hell of a woman. You're the one, Buffy. I do understand why a lot of people prefer Angel over Spike. Angel is sorry for every evil deed he did while he was soulless. (although a lot of the time, it just seemed like he was feeling sorry for himself) Spike doesn't seem to do this. But I don't like the fact that people don't like him because when he did get his soul all he seemed to be sorry about was attempting to rape Buffy. But why is this so bad? I believe that rape is worse than murder. And it had to be worse for him. Most rapists just rape random women, women that they don't know, that they don't have feelings for. Spike attempted to rape the woman he loved more than anything else. Of course that's going to affect him mentally. If it didn't, I would consider him to be just as bad, if not worse, than Angelus. Out of all the horrible things Spike did while he had no soul and when he could still hurt people, this had to be the worst. No, he didn't succeed, but the fact that he tried is bad enough. I do believe that a lot of Spike fans like him because of his looks, or his accent (and I have to admit that I find him very attractive), but you can't just lump all Spike fans into one group. We're not all a pack of panting fan girls, who's only reason for liking him is because he wears a leather jacket, has bleached hair, and has a sexy accent and cheekbones.

I can't say that Angelus was much better of than Spike was before he was reformed. Hell if you remember correctly "The Master" was actually proud of Angelus because while Spike was a murderous b*****d Angelus turned murder into a friggen artform, look at Drucilla. Drucilla is the result of Angelus being a twisted ********, tormenting the poor girl untill she's driven compleatly out of her gord THAN he turns her into a vampire so as to unleash THAT havok onto the world. And to top it off sure he got his soul back but he never had to fight for it, he was Cursed with his soul as a punishment for what he did. Spike actually activly CHOSE to regain his soul, he wanted it back and fought for it. An act of redemption out of guilt is nothing in comparison to an act of redemption out of shear desire and love.
Ohh yeah and lets not forget that Willam the Bloody aka Spike's violant tendancies come from a chemical imbalance, not the vampiric b*****d side of him...he can't help being an a*****e, they didn't have therapy when he was human
(I'm going off the BtVS RPG that says he's got this disorder and since it was made in cooperiation with the mighty Joss I'll have to agree with it)

i didnt really like spike all the way through buffy, i began to hate him when he was reffered, or reffered to himself as the "big bad" oh yes, he was so scary NOT!
i mean come on, he wasnt as strong as the master, adam, glory willow, not even caleb, that dosent tell me that hes a big bad it just tells me that he's out of his league. he couldnt even really challenge buffy without extra help when he was fighting her, i mean, big deal he killed two slayers, they could of been having a bad day!!! hes not even a bad a**, he trys to act like it!
theres just something about his charcter that i really dont like.

Really, I'm sorry. i didnt even find him that funny, ha ha ha! he swears alot big deal, maybe its just because im british that all that swearing isnt really funny and i hate the way he acts around people, i say yet again, he was not a bad a**! dru was a badass, even vamp willow was a badass and she was only in it for two episodes, to me, spike wasnt that good. yeah big deal he killed people, yeah big deal he turned good, yeah big deal he did really love buffy, he took advantage of her emotional state in season 6! oh god, i hope they dont make a spin off series of spike, because i will have to personally go up to joss whedon, say "buffy was brill, but spike has to go" then cut off his head!, do you think yuo can tell that im not much of a spike fan?

okey so i didn't take the time to read ALL of the post. so sue me!!! but i don't know why others like him but i know why i luv him!! and it's not because i think he's missunderstood!! it's cause i'm evil. i hated that he got a chip! and that he whent and got himself a soul. i luved him more without the soul i would SO date spike if he didn't have his soul and i would gladly help with the slaughter of the inocent and mayham and distruction is my middle name...names...whatever! i don't think he's missunderstood i think they are right to say that heäs evil cause ya know he is!! and thats what i luv 'bout him! so now that everybody here thinks that i'm crazy i think i shall wonder of and continue my parade of crazyness!! bye bye all

I believe that style person can returning a good guy. Same if him kill the world, if a person would change, he change. This is same for Spike, he kill much person but with the thing he have in the head, he can change and kill the bad person.^^ Spike is so great!Angelus can change with the magic why Spike can't change?

Lol, we all have our different opinons. Who cares if he's over 40? Some may hate that fact some doesn't care because he has a nice built. But at the end, if you hate him or so, the fangirls aren't going to kill you know are they?
