He seemed to deliberate doing so before passing the butter along. "You drive a hard bargain."

"Down t'two centuries. Not bad, Hawthorn. Since yer a vampire m'sure that's nothin' fer you."

She laughed something orange and continued to stuff her face. This was why she didn't want to bring a relationship into the situation. She liked being friends with Jack. She liked sleeping with him and making pancakes and snarky jokes in the same sentence.

What she didn't want was to hear the disappointment in his voice when she inevitably ******** up somehow. Whether through a drunk night with Connor or her own impatience, she was so sure that she'd hurt him somehow. That she'd hear the same pained understand that Mel had given her over a few text messages.

She didn't trust herself enough to protect him.

"Bless you for your generosity," he said graciously, even bowing his head.

Jack was content to nibble, having a bird's stomach despite his size, and peppered further conversation in just because he could. Because he felt gracious himself. Because chatter put Chel at ease more than most things could.

"Why else do you think we never go to your place? Chris wouldn't let me in the door if he's there," he pointed out. "Well, and he's annoying. Almost more than you are. He'd put a stake in my heart if I stayed the night just to be sure."

"Naw, Chris likes you. It'd just be awkward as ******** f'he walked in on it." Half truth; it was more because she didn't want such memories associated with her home base. Her home had to be a free space.

Annoying but you like me, she thought, though she thought better of saying it out loud. "How do you live out here on yer own anyways? Ain't this place like a billion dollars?" Chel could only dream on her 7-11 salary. She was saving for something else first, anyways.

"I'd have a mansion with servants pouring your syrup if that were the case. My parents pay a part of the rent," he explained as he forked another piece of pancake into his mouth. "I have to deal with what's left as well as groceries and s**t. That's the deal for now, but I expect they'll be dropping their support after I graduate unless I keep going with biochem."

That was interesting.

"You don't wanna do biochem?

(For the record, Chel had no clue what biochem entailed. She imaginged a lot of beakers and bubbling substances, just like on TV).

"I mean..." He puffed a breath of air. "It's complicated. I'd rather do photography for a living, though."

"What," she said, mouth half full of pancakes, "You should totally do photography then!" Of course she was a bit of a hypocrite; she wasn't doing what she wanted to either. She didn't think anyone in the world wanted 7-11 to be their lifelong career.

"Yer good at it an' f'it makes you happy-"

He let her chew and swallow first before speaking. "It's not a steady job, though," Jack said. "Not any more than a writing job would be anyway. At least if you're decent with a hard science there's money to be had."

He's had this conversation many times before with his parents. It was simultaneously a point of defiance and resignation: that he wouldn't give it up but that it wasn't a viable option for now.

Her mouth was empty as he talked, but then somehow she took a bite right as she began to speak again. Chel was not a lady, that much was sure.

She wanted to say something cliche about doing what you love, but when she thought about it, all she could say was, "Yeah. Money sucks d**k."

She pointed her fork at him. "F'you had a billion dollars what would you do?" Chel knew her own answers by heart because there wasn't really a day that went by without her thinking about money. She had to with her family's financial situation.

"Switch to a photography major. Pay off impending student loans," he replied almost immediately. "Buy a house the hell away from here. Put some away to invest. Get a cat. Omma is allergic," Jack explained. "You?"

She thought it oddly endearing that a cat somehow ended up on that list.

"Buy a motorcycle." Priorities. "Drive it away an' never come back." She wanted to travel, she'd always wanted to travel. Maybe because of the dim hope that home was somewhere out there.

She paused for a moment. "F'you ever wanna switch to photography ... I'll help you pay for stuff." Which wasn't saying much since she had a pathetic salary, but she did have one. She had two hands that could do anything other people needed.

He wouldn't blame her if she had left either. But even rhetorically speaking, the idea made him almost wistful. Was she really willing to sever all her ties like that?

"Like 7-11 pays you enough to support yourself," Jack observed with a snort. "Don't worry about it."

He soaked one of the last pieces of his pancake (what a slow eater) in syrup. "Got a cross-country destination in mind?"

"I got a place with my cousin," she said (even if it didn't really make her happy, even if sometimes she did want to ******** at her own place), "So all the money I got's like extra cash an' s**t."

She gave him a tiny shove. I mean it.

"I'd just wanna drive," she said earnestly. "Stop at weird gas stations an' eat at little old ladies' diners." She pursed her lips for a moment and then gave an earthy sounding laugh. "S'just an idea though. M'probably gonna end up stayin' here and bein' buried over on fourth street." A well known graveyard she was sure Jack had frequented, the weirdo.
