I never said we'd be better off, I'm just trying to think of some damned topics D: It's hard to make stuff up every week when no one participates anyway!

socialism vs. communism vs. capitalism is a good debate topic, but a very heady one ...debating the definitions could be a thread all on its own.

If you say absolutely against socialism, there goes public education (and government assiastance with college), vaccinations and other base preventative health care, police, military, FDA customs checks....

And someone is bound to bring up Ann Rand

Ok, I got one for ya. How far can bullets penetrate water? In other words, can you evade someone gunning you if you try and dive into a body of water and swim away? Is it even possible?

It depends on what's being fired and of course who is doing the swimming.
Terry Pratchet exploited this in his novel Nation.

For all that this has been a highly debated subject in certain fields, there isn't much room for debate. It's just fun with physics and making gun afficianados feel a little silly

I'm for socialism.

Or fascism, but that one not so much, because there's a large chance that I wouldn't be in the controlling strata.
PostPosted: Sat Mar 13, 2010 7:23 am

I'm a socialist.
My sister lives in Switzerland right now and it gets so tempting to drop everything and take her up on the offer to drop in any time. I'd have a hell of a time learning the language (all I can say right now is thanks for the food, but apparantly my remedial French could hold me over) and it would take some doing to get citizenship but the medical, educational and economic advantages really temp me.
I also like the whole not sacrificing the youth of the country to force your ideals on other countries that America is so big on. How many kids went to the Middle East for warfare rather than college? I'm pretty far from being a pacifist, but it really sickens me the extent to which the USA will destroy its' own in a blowhard pissing match with the non-corporeal ideal of terrorism.
All it's really done is proven that terrorism works.

Hmm...bigger fail: War on Terror or War on Drugs?

I don't see believing in evolution as necessarily being mutually exclusive to believing in a god.
It does totally screw any hope of lieterally interpreting the Christian Bible, but then so does having a round planet.

I had a friend in highschool who was raised Irish Catholic but found that the Bible really didn't make any sense if you took it literally and it advocated some really outdated and vicious ideas like beating people to death for eating shellfish. She still believed in Yaweh and the the seven days of creation were seven of God's days and still going on, which was why land and animals are still being made. Her own reformed Christianity.

Many religions don't have the static world of Biblical portayal.
Off the top of my head, Hindu, Shinto, Tao and Wicca
Yaweh is just big on the whole 'my way is the only way' view etymology. No offense to Chriatians, but for a little mountain god, Yaweh sure thinks alot of himself.

You're right, they're not mutually exclusive; unfortunately I was desperate for some kind of topic that people would post in.

Let's ...attention getters....

anything involving sex

Maybe something about the HPV vaccince. It's pretty controversial, particularly in the south and Bible belt.

Some want it to be a required vaccination for school while extremist object that it encourages sexual activity.

Or here's a question:

If the majority of men are supposedly obsessed with breast, why aren't more men involved in finding a cure for breast cancer?

or

The War on Terror fails harder than The War on Drugs. But both obviously fail.
PostPosted: Fri Mar 26, 2010 9:51 am

Hmmmm

War on Terror:
The US strikes fear into its citizens to gain funding and support for terroristic attacks on the Middle East. The US government futher terroizes its citizens by instituting policies violating habius corpus, freedom of speech and privacy, as well as endorsing and practicing racial profiling.

War on Drugs:
Drug using president advocates "just saying no" to drugs while he and his constituants pander to the pharmacutical lobbiests keeping non-pharmacutical treatments from becoming legally practiced, and legalizing HMO restricting coverages to promote drug use and reatrict disclosures of non-drug treatments. Arnold Schartzeneger, (sp?) then drug user, was a one of the major celebrity endorsers.
Also many rockstars, especially of the metal genre, were recruited to do public advisory "we don't need drugs to be cool" commercials, generally filmed while the muscians were on drugs.
They became a running joke

So over all, the War on Drugs increased drug use mainly in the US, but the War on Terror inflicted terror globally.

How did an admitted former drug and steroid user and porn star become governor of Caliornia?
California was much better off with Jerry Brown, the pot smoking nerd, as governor.
