The Halloween

"I feel that I would be a valuable asset to the band. My reasons for wanting to join are my own, and they're rather personal. However, you can rest assured that it's not merely because I have nothing better to do. I'm 19, and I live down the street over there," he gestured towards the house he'd been walking to, pointing at it, "right there,"

By now most of the waiting crowd had thinned out. Those applying for bass and drums had gotten the hint that there was no longer any need to stick around.

The young man still remained in the line, gazing at the bluebirds nesting in a tree nearby. All the while his ears were sharply attuned to the conversation going on within the garage. He rubbed the back of his neck, which was still sore from the incident minutes before.

"Heh. This is turning out to be a fine day," he thought to himself.

"Great," she said, only one octave (sp?) above the forcive tone she was using before, "Now go have a seat and meet the bass player and help us weed out a lead guitarist. And possibly someone who can manage this lot better."

Probebly another reason that she decided to look for a new manager was that she herself noticed how high-strung she was. She didn't mean to be, but it was just what was bred into her by her parents.

While all this went on Habit was growing rather bored having sat still for over 5 minutes. At first he tried humming to break the boredom, then swinging his legs, and finally rapping his fingers and knuckles against the table. But after a while even that failed to amuse him, and in fact earned him several irritated looks. He sighed dramatically and pouted.

Suddenly, his eyes caught sight of the man he'd knocked over still milling about with the rest of the waning crowd. The young man didn't seem to have an instrument, in fact he didn't even seem interested in the try-outs at all, just stood there watching a birds nest. 'Weird,' Habit thought to himself, carefully studying the man. Finally, curiosity getting the better og him, the tanned youth swept to his feet and began making his way over to the stranger.

"Can I ... help you with something?" he ventured.

"Maybe." The man spoke softly, his gaze still fixated on the nest in the tree. "Or maybe I'm here to help you."

He turned to face Habit and removed the dark sunglasses. His hazel eyes glowed brightly. "Tell me." His attention returned to the nest. "Have you ever... wanted to fly?"

(( *luvs you* heart ))

Habit's face screwed up a bit in confusion and he bounced nervously on his toes. "Um ... I don't quite follow you." Then he leaned in conspiratorially and whispered - a tad too loudly -"But if this is about drugs, you really should try somewhere else."

((*luvs you, too heart *))

The man laughed heartilly, shaking his head. "No, of course it's not." He slipped his arm around Habit, placing his hand on the small of his back. "Look there." He gestured towards the bluebirds in the nest.

The youth felt a strange, nervous jittering in his stomach at the man's touch, a feeling he tried to ignore by focusing on the birds instead. "Bluebirds?" he said with some surprise, not having noticed them before.

The man nodded. "Yes, indeed. Birds are among the luckiest creatures in the world, you know."
He reached his hand up towards the sky, as though trying to grasp at something far out of his reach. He spoke as if he were reading from a fantasy novel. "They get to fly high in the sky, free from the worries and troubles of those that walk the earth. Wouldn't you like that? That feeling of freedom? The chance to fly, to soar above and beyond your dreams?"

Habit studied the man carefully before breaking out in politly amused giggles. "You're silly," he chirped, beaming at the stranger. Then he turned to look back at the little birds in their nest. One - the female - suddenly took to the air and Habit watched her with initerest and awe. "But ... I know what you mean," he added softly.

The man nodded, smiling softly. "I see. That's good."

"Oh! Pardon my rudeness. I have not yet introduced myself." He held out his free hand, the other still placed gently against Habit's back.
"Call me Tim."

Habit blushed sweetly and took the offered hand. "Tim. It's wonderful to meet you," he chirped, "I'm Habit!" He twisted just slightly, one hand still in Tim's grip while he used the other to point out each of his friends in turn. "That's Cecile, and Shawn, and Odin. We're starting a band! Do you play?" He glanced around the other, searching out some sort of hidden instrument.

"A pleasure, Habit. A real pleasure." He smiled and patted the youth on the back. "And no, I'm afraid I do not play, nor am I here to audition,"

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled from within a small business card. "Here." He held the card out to Habit. Inscribed on it in bold, silver letters was his name and cell number. And.... something else:

'Management & Production - InsideOut Records'

Cecile herself was growing quite bored with all craptastic guitar players. She felt her attention waivering, but not to the point of squirming in her seat. Her chin in her hand, elbow resting on the table beside her, she felt her eyes slowy peeling away from the latest auditioner. Her eyes scanned the people still left to try out. Damn there were alot of them.

Her eyes then fell upon Habit and his new friend. The music in the garage was a tad too loud to hear what was being said at that distance, but she watched them and what they were doing.

Seeing the little rectangle of paper come from within the coat and being passed to Habit, Cecile got a little tingle down her spine that she couldn't explain.

The youth nearly swallowed his tongue when he read what was written on the card. Speechless and shocked he stared at Tim as though looking for confirmation. "You...? Violet eyes darted back to the little card grasped tight between his fingers like a lifeline. "You...? Buh?" Deep inside himself he winced at how thickheaded he sounded, but at the surface he was too excited to care.
