These few moments of blindness felt like an eternity to the impatient girl but at last blurred shapes began to take form in the blackness. She was not one to waste time when there was none to spare however, and she used these brief seconds to swing her viola's leather case around her hip, even as let out a mental tirade of curses at that bloody torch. She was just about to snap open the worn clasps when a new softer (and less painful) light became apparent amid the black spots that still dotted her vision. Fire, a flaming sword it seemed, and she watched as it slashed downward upon the human. Vhael'iss's mouth fell open, shocked by the strength behind that blow, and even more so by the creature's deceptively tough hide. Surely such a tiny man should not withstand a strike from a man as big as Vellek! But no... not a man, vhael'iss realized with a start when her eyes took in the ease with which it wielded the large weapon, the wicked teeth spread in such a vicious smile, and finally the bloody red hat that it wore. She knew what this was. "Redcap," she breathed aloud in her alarm, recalling the frightening light in which these strange fey were portrayed in her books. "Be wary- these creatures are rarely found alone!" The quick warning passed her lips even as she called upon a thread of magic deep inside her. Flames the color of violet immediately sprang up to outline the redcap's diminutive form. They would not burn as they were nothing more than illusion but the creature would be hard pressed to hide now even in the newly fallen dark caused by the sword being extinguish. It would also save Vellek from being blinded and at a brutal disadvantage.

The woman's dark eyes were focused heavily upon the flaming sword as it approached, waiting to see what it was. Before it got too close to their entourage, she could already make out the creature's appearance. What baffled her, though, was the ease at which it carried the weapon for as small as it was. Nevertheless, she made sure that her hand was solidly holding her morningstar.
The speed of the little man caught her off-guard, but she held fast and moved as quickly as she could. Even as she began to move towards the little creature, she watched Vellek's mace bounce off of the creature's skin, followed shortly by her mild surprise and flaming sword leaving the redcap's grasp. A split second later and the little man was outlined in a faux fire as she closed the remaining distance between herself and the creature, drawing her weapon back for what she hoped would be a good hit.

Matasoga saw the old-looking, wiry humanoid with a weapon that seemed far too large for it and did a brief mental inventory and found that it was nothing that appeared in any of his bestiaries. Judging by the fact that it dressed and armed itself, he supposed that it was most likely sentient, though the time for any attempts at diplomacy had passed. Whatever it was, he'd just have to hope that it wasn't immune to electricity. He dashed so that there was a line to the creature that he could fill with his lightning without hitting any of his allies. He knew that he would, henceforth, be opening (and with luck, also closing) most of his future battles this way. He yelled a brief warning to his allied as he tightened the arcane glands in his chest. His hair stood on end and a crash of thunder was heard as he loosed a breath of lightning at their enemy.

Kal'ara watched the goings-on from her (relatively) safe spot. The creature hadn't seen her yet, and so she silently unsheathed two of her throwing daggers (realising that a crossbow was not an appropriate weapon for this conflict) and weighed them up in her hands. Once both Eliae and Matasoga had attacked the creature, she took aim and threw a dagger at the creature's back, hoping it would logde itself and do at least a little damage.

The redcap looked up at its blade as Adustes' chain wrapped around it, its expression changing to shock when the weapon was wrenched out of its hands and it found itself wreathed in violet flames. Incredulous, it merely looked at its empty hands for a heartbeat, wondering at the flames that did not burn. It was snapped back to reality when it noticed movement to the side. It dove forward just in time to evade the female human's spiked morningstar, as well as a dagger thrown in from the same side and slightly behind. At the same moment a bright light flashed behind the tree to the woman's side, accompanied with a crack of thunder. A bolt of lightning streaked from the trunk and passed through the space the redcap had just been standing in. The creature's dive avoided most of the blast, but it couldn't evade a thick arc that branched off the main bolt. The electricity blackened a patch of skin on the redcap's side, and stood his hair on end. It rolled to its feet, grasping the oversized sword and blinking the afterimage of the sudden light clear of its vision. It held the sword to one side and reignited the flame, using the brighter light that it shed to seek out the source of the lightning. Its gaze flitted wildly about until it found it; a hatted, blue-skinned figure only dimly lit by the flaming sword, many feet behind the human woman. Unfortunately, the two humans, as well as a tree and horse, created a wall before the redcap, blocking it from reaching the figure. Even so, reaching him would be a simple matter, it thought. All it had to do is cut down the woman blocking its path. It gave an angry snarl and stepped forward, swinging the blade at Eliae. Despite any attempt to dodge or deflect it, the blade strikes and cuts through her natural armor, opening a diagonal slash across the front of her thighs.
(Attack: 13 + 9 = 22. Eliae takes 6 damage, after damage reduction is applied.)

Vellek found relief in the momentary darkness as the tiny old man was disarmed. He was just as surprised as the creature when it suddenly combusted in the strange flames. He gave a wince as he hefted his heavy mace, about to step forward and take advantage of his opponent's hesitance when the lightning bolt shot past, stopping his advance. Having on many occasions seen the effect of lightning on the battlefield, he held his maces back and retreated a step. He breathed a sigh of relief that his metal weapons and armor hadn't attracted the electricity, though the ambient static that charged the air sent an uncomfortable tingling through his body. His horse whinnied and reared up as the lightning flared, then began slowly backing away. But it was bred for war, and well accustomed to the din of battle. Vellek was confident it would not flee without him. He stepped forward again as the creature moved to attack, resolving to make the enemy regret its lack of focus. He ignored the pain in his shoulder and swung his maces.
Adustes couldn't help but smirk at his success in disarming the redcap, as temporary as it was. It had been quite some time since he had last entered combat; he was pleased to find his skill hadn't deteriorated. He threw up an arm and clamped his eyes shut at the appearance of the lightning, stepping back as much to put some distance between himself and the effect as in response to the redcap diving closer. Shadar-kai sometimes worked alongside redcaps, and Adustes, at an earlier point in his life, had had the displeasure of such an experience. With it came some understanding of these creatures. Most notable, aside from their incredible level of cruelty and savage behavior that would sicken even the most depraved humans, was that most weapons did little to harm them, but those crafted of cold-wrought iron affected them normally. He began reaching for one such weapon in his possession, one of a pair of small knives he used primarily to feed his masochistic impulses; but stopped, deciding that any damage it caused would be minimal, and a spell would be of more use. He began uttering a prayer and released his grip on his spiked chain, bringing his left hand -with one end of the chain still coiled around the forearm- up to touch the holy symbol at his throat while the other traced a sigil in the air before him. A nimbus of jet-black radiance permeated his form. He held his free hand out toward the redcap's exposed back and released the energy of the spell. The dark radiance left him, splitting out into twin beams of concentrated shadowstuff and darted out toward the savage fey.
EDIT: Vellek's resolve gave way to frustration at the end of his maces' chops. He brought the head of his heavy mace solidly down between the old man's haunched shoulders, but the blow seemed to have no effect on it. It drew back its sword in preparation for its own attack just in time to intercept the mercenary's lighter mace, and his secondary swing with the heavy mace hit at such an angle that the weapon glanced harmlessly away. Adustes however, had better luck with his attack. Both streams of shadow flew unerringly to pierce their target's back, each punching a small hole through its tough hide with a small spurt of blood, and elicited a pained grunt from the creature.
Vellek's attacks - heavy mace 1 = 24 - light mace = 15 - heavy mace 2 = 19 Adustes - knowledge (nature): 4+13= 17 - bolt 1: 8+1+12= 21 - bolt 2: 8+1+15= 24 - hide in plain sight: 14+1= 15 Redcap - next round's spot: 18+15= 33

Vhael'iss was fortunate that she had glanced down to her viola case at the very instant that the darkness lit up with a thunderous flash and her gaze flew back to the battle with widened eyes. She had missed being blinded but she could still feel the electric charge in the air and she made a mental note to never give the half blue man reason to strike at her that way... Vhael'iss was just watching Adustes' impressive shadow attack when she tucked her instrument under her chin and allowed herself one single calming breath before drawing the bow across the strings. This was it. The young woman may have acted with nothing but confidence in her abilities when the shadar-kai had questioned her but this would be the first time she'd ever used them in such a circumstance... Her skills had always been ideal for more... subtle interactions, and she was good at it, but in the midst of battle? Her heart was fluttering in her chest in a mixture of excitement and worry. If she did no good, would Adustes abandon her? But she could not afford to lose her concentration and so she let her eyes fall closed and she slipped further into the shadow behind the wide tree in the hopes that it would be enough of a shield while her senses were elsewhere. The slow and deep tones of her viola started out low, no more than a gentle wave of regret and sorrow creeping though the harsh sounds of battle... She felt it weave through their clashing weapons, their cries of anger or pain. She could feel their excitement like gooseflesh on her skin, the exhilarating thrill of war, and she countered it with despair. Her song grew, the hopeless tones punctuated with higher notes that cut through with grief and remorse so sharp it was like a blade. Though her song was still stirring in its own right, her companions would feel none of the magic in her melody as she focused its entirety on their redcap foe.

Despite her attempt to move out of the way of the creature's blade, she hissed in pain as the blade bit into her legs. The wounds stung and would, doubtlessly, slow her down for a while. Nevertheless, though, she ignored the pain as best she could, bringing her morningstar across in a backhand, aiming for the puny man's head or neck.

Matasoga scowled at the disappointing results. That may have been the weakest lighting that he had ever produced, and he knew that as it left him. He knew that his use henceforth would be quite severely limited. Judging from the pained look of the creature, however, he knew that he had at least done some damage. He dashed forward 15 feet so that he was perpendicular to the creature. He drew his crossbow, readied as usual and took a shot at the creature. Attack roll: 16+3= 19

The redcap laughed at the humans' pathetic attempts to harm him, watching as the male's maces bounced harmlessly off his hide, and the female struck with such misplaced force that the impact, rather than causing him harm, wrenched the morningstar from her grasp. His back jerked up straight as something sharp slammed into his back. It turned and looked over its shoulder in time to see the trailing wisps of shadow from Adustes' spell. His fanged grimace faded as oppressive music drifted from the trees off to the side. Each note made his heart sink, his strength seem to drain away, his entire body feel heavy. His shoulders sagged and the sword lowered, the flames dying down low in response to the depression that had befallen him. He immediately regretted the theft of the blade he held, and began to feel bad about attacking these people, but its rage and delight in bloodshed wouldn't allow it to cease attacking them. He looked back to the front, noticing that the blue figure no longer stood behind the human woman. Movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention and he noted the blue one and another woman with crossbows aimed in his direction. Bolts flew, and the redcap hopped back. He barely managed to avoid one, and the other struck his back at such an angle that the quarrel redirected and shot off into the darkness, leaving only a sleight furrow in his thick skin. He considered charging the blue man. It would be easy now that nothing stood between them. But the shadar-kai's spell had hurt more. It quickly turned and flung itself at the shadow fey, swinging its sword with a howl. The flames flared as the blade bit into Adustes' hip, just below the lip of his breastplate, and sliced across his stomach with a small spray of blood.
(Eliae rolled a natural 1, and a result of 8 (using the second roll to confirm for critical failure) misses, so she drops her weapon.)

Adustes' eyes widened at the suddenness with which the redcap charged him. He moved to dodge the blade but the redcap was too fast. The sword's razor edge slashed just below his armor, drawing a gash over the priest's abdomen. He staggered a few steps back and nearly doubled over with the impact, giving an audible gasp, whether in pain, pleasure, or both was uncertain. He pressed his chain-wrapped arm to the wound to hold back the blood flow, grinning like a madman at the redcap, eliciting a quite confused look from the creature. He licked at the line of blood now running over his lip and down his chin and began chanting in the draconic tongue, repositioned his arm so that it still held against the wound but also reached his holy symbol, the other hand making the gestures required for the coming spell. The spell completed and the space before Adustes grew darker. The darkness gathered upon a single line, solidified, and took on definition; forming into an ornate black greatsword that hung, point down, suspended in midair. Two short prongs extended from the pommel back toward the hilt, a small point of red light flaring into existence just above each spike. The hilt twisted and turned, pointing the pommel toward the redcap, split horizontally down the center and hissed, now appearing very much like a small dragon's head. The edges of the blade took on a faint, angry red glow, raised and whipped around, as though an invisible hand were testing its heft, the dragon-head pommel twisting with each movement to glare at the creature before it. The weapon whipped itself again, this time darting forward and angling its edge to strike the redcap. Vellek found he could barely keep up with the small fey. It was so flighty, so fast, he couldn't read its movements enough to predict its next move. He barely managed to lash out with a mace before it moved out of range when it turned away to attack Adustes. He wasted not a moment as it darted away, charging in to strike at it while its back was turned, focusing his strength on a single point and brought his heavy mace down, aiming for the top of the creature's head. EDIT: Despite his quick reflexes, the quick strike Vellek took as the fey moved away only barely clipped its ribs, not a solid enough hit to do it any harm. The shadar-kai's behavior was confusing to the redcap. Unlike Adustes, this one had never had the opportunity to work with one of the other's kind. It made no sense to him that the taller fey would react with such an exultant expression to as serious a stomach wound as he'd suffered. And to continue casting, almost as if it hadn't happened... He stood back and gaped as the conjured sword formed from the shadows, unsure what to make of it until it began to swing of its own accord. He instantly put up his guard, raising the b*****d sword in his hands in an effort to block it, but the black blade passed through it as though it were nothing and cut along the redcap's arm and shoulder, the thick skin not slowing it in the least. The redcap staggered back a step in pain and disbelief. No weapon had ever hurt it that much. Before it could recover, Vellek's mace came down on the crown of the fey's head with a loud thud, causing his opponent to bow somewhat under the weight of the blow. Adustes' attack: 7+2+12= 21 Vellek's attack of opportunity: 9+7= 16 Vellek's charge (using feat and power attack (converting 5 points of attack for damage)): 9 +2 for charging +2 for flanking +19 -5 = 27 Redcap's Fortitude save: 10+6= 16

Vhael'iss felt the familiar taste of remorse creeping through the redcap's rage and there was a distant sense of satisfaction though she was too immersed in the melody to enjoy her victory. The diminutive fey was not stopping in his attacks but she could feel its hesitancy and hopefully that would be enough to tip the battle in their favor. Perhaps not, though, for as far as she could tell Adustes was the only one who was doing any real harm to the creature... Eyes still closed, she kept that special sense of hers focused intently on the redcap as she played, exploring its emotions and reactions to her song, using them to make her melodic lament as potent as possible.

Eliae was too aggravated at her poorly-placed hit to notice that the redcap had so suddenly moved away from her. She reached to her waist, pulling her meteoric dagger from its sheath and expending two charges of the dagger, quickly flicking it at the creature before reaching down to pick her mace back up off of the ground.
EDIT: The sudden, brief flare of fire told her that the dagger had struck true, smirking a little as she felt the dagger's magic return it to her hand, only to be immediately re-sheathed.
