But, if JKR went into the same depth with Umbridge as she did with Tom, maybe her evil would be explained by... some sort of thing that happened in her lifetime. And, like Tom, you might end up feeling sorry for her and then there would be that level of sympathy. With Tom, people can't help but feel sorry for him because of wha the went through as a child. I like my villain's to be... human. Not just the bad person that kills because they are evil and ba, but a person that actually has a meaning, or a source of their anger for sorts. Something that drove them to that point of insanity that wants them to inflinct pain like they are. That, to me, is not only a good villain, but a good character.

I didn't feel too sorry for Tom - I mean, sure, it was sad that he had such a lonely childhood and all, but as I've said in another thread, I think he would have been like that anyway to some degree, no matter how or where he was raised.
Umbridge, on the other hand - she's just prejudiced. Yes, she was probably raised that way, but that doesn't explain everything, nor does it excuse her actions.|--- <|Slytherin Pride!

Oh, I'm not saying that how you were raised excuses her actions. She's a horrible woman, and she will always be. I'm just saying that how people are raised affects how they are in life, and who they grow up to be. I honestly think that how Tom was brought up in life had a lot to do with his darkness. Due to the fact that he was a more powerful wizard naturally, he still would've had the aura that commanded attention, but I don't think he would've been bad no matter what environment he was raised in. Bad behaviour isn't genetic... bad behaviour is due to bad development as a child.

But Finora, if it's all (or mostly) in how he was raised, why didn't more of the kids from the orphanage grow up like that? Why didn't Harry grow up like that? And don't tell me that it's because his mother loved him. He was six months old. After that, he lived in a cupboard.
Bad behavior isn't genetic, but if someone is a psychopath, then they are a psychopath, no matter how they're raised. And I think Voldie goes beyond 'bad behavior'.

Tom most definitely had a little bit more than 'bad behaviour', but... do you think it's to the extent where he has an actual mental instability or genetic disfunction?

Kat's right - if it was the orphanage, then more of the kids should have grown up that way. Granted, the way Tom turned out was due to lots of wrong things happening at the wrong time, but there are some things that chance and circumstances won't change. So, Tom was psychotic? Well, if Tom was born with a mental instability, then I could understand that he would grow up similarly no matter what environment he had been raised in. But, could this mental instability not be from the stress that Merope had been put under when she was pregnant? If Tom had been carried in Molly's womb, I think the genes would've made him slightly less psychotic. Maybe the inbred-ness of Merope had finally affected her child.

Quite frankly it is all about Snape. I pretty much only read the last book to see what happened to him....It was very sad. Ahh well,, he died with honor at least...even if it was by a snake LOL.

So really, if Tom had not been related to the Gaunts whatsoever, than he wouldn't have turned out so... evilly. Crazy in-bred purebloods... no wonder they're all psychotic. ><
