Chi Onomi I think the biggest error in that movie (and there were many) was casting Jim Carrey as Olaf. He's supposed to be this evil, terrifying character, and Carrey just overplayed him and made him too... funny. Ordinarily, I have nothing against Jim Carrey, but he should not have been in that movie.

I'm not tottaly sure about this because i haven't read the first book (I skipped to Reptile Room and skipped a few more from there and picked it up at Austere Academy, then skipped some more to Hostile Hospital and have been going 1 at a time since then) but a friend told me that when Violet signs the marriage form, she actually gets away with writing with her left hand instead of Olaf telling her to sign with her right. Also, Claus needs GLASSES! Jebus... also, nowhere (in all the books i have read, including the biography) does it mention these "spyglasses".

Well, the only thing that really bothered me was Klaus had no glasses. That's about it. It could have been worse, way worse.
And I think Mr. Poe and Peter Pettigrew were played by the same guy....let me check.
Edit: I check IMDB.com and yes, he played Mr. Poe and Peter Pettigrew.

Nothing really bugged me in the movie.
I mean, when people make a movie out of some books, they always leave parts out and change stuff, just so people who didn't and did read the books both pretty much like it, it's like another side to the story.
Im not saying anyones picky, but it did turn out to be a pretty good movie even though it wasn't perfect, after all, they only had like 60 days to make it? whee

They should be ashamed of themselves for screwing up the movie for the fans of the book!

After watching the movie with the audio comentary, I think they changed all that stuff on purpose. The director even asks Lemony if it's okay that they took the "creative lisence" with the movie that they did. And I think he could have been joking, but Lemony said he hoped they made it more cheereful than the books at the begining. The way they mutilated the ending made it so that they wouldn't have had to bring in extra characters and set to do the poe household (not an excuse, but an explination...sorry if it's a repetition). I figured it out after watching the outtakes and poe's house wasn't anywhere in there.

I, in all my honest opinion, didn't like it. :/ I mean, I can understand, but come on! Urgh. Of course, I'm the kind of person who picks at books turned into movies. I had a LOT to rant about with the SoUE movie, I think they could've done MUCH better, but I may just be over-critical.
Honestly, at the end of the Hitchhiker's Guide movie: "The dolphins never came back! And Arthur and Trillian....Grr."
I'm one of those people who think that books should be left untouched. Except in the rare case of an amazing book-movie, I.E. Hitchhiker's Guide. >> <<
I have to agree with a lot of you on the one point that I ADORED Violet's dress. After I was finished picking it apart to my roommate, I concluded with "However, Violet's dress was uber cool, and I want a dress like it."

I kinda liked the movie. My only complaint is with Olaf's troupe. The bald man was too whiny and "I want I want"-ish, the abigouis gender person could have been casted better. In the book it says that he/she is huge, ut in the movie I think he/she was the smallest of the troupe. the white faced women were pale at best, but I didnt really have a complaint about the hook handed man, I guess it's partially becaue he's my favorite.
Other than that I liked the movie.
edit: And the bald man didnt even have long nose. He has a stubby pug nose. and he wasnt even completly bald, he had a weird shape in the back of his head which he does not have in the book, they didnt even include his white curly wig.

*takes deep breath* THE MOVIE WAS COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY CRAP.
My apologies for the capitals. But it IS. It butchered the books beyond all belief. The chronology, the appearances of the characters, the reasons for things happening... Oh for crying out loud, it's just CRAP. I apologise for my swearing.
For the first thing - Klaus. Klaus, for one thing, is meant to be way shorter than Violet. He is a twelve-year-old guy, and she is a fourteen-year-old girl, naturally there's gonna be a huge height difference. But also it says every now and then in the books (don't ask where) that Klaus is pretty darn short. Plus, in the illustrations, he is so TINY. Like amazingly so. And also, the glasses. THE GLASSES. Without the glasses, THERE CAN BE NO MISERABLE MILL. The Miserable Mill revolves around the fact that Klaus has glasses and without them, it's trashed. Nothing can happen. They can never make a sequel.
Secondly, why the hell is Sunny wearing a pink dress? In The Grim Grotto she mentions her Hobson's choice as being "bath or pink dress". So why the hell would she be constantly wearing one? It's... agggh!
Next, Uncle Monty's first assistant, whose name I cannot recall as my friend is borrowing The Reptile Room off me, was killed by being pushed into the Swarthy Swamp. It says so in The Unauthorized Autobiography - "Overheard a gravelly voice, as in "the Dissonant Toad, which could imitate human speech in a gravelly voice,"... The voice was muttering, apparently to itself, how inconvenient it was to drown someone, because it got all wet and it hated that" (p 152). Obviously, that is Count Olaf (the gravelly voice) talking about how annoying it is to drown people. The paragraph goes next to the diagram of Swarthy Swamp. Soooo, he was NOT KILLED BY A TRAIN. Fools.
And the chronology... The stupid, stupid chronology. Count Olaf attempted to marry Violet at the end of The Bad Beginning. Seriously, I may POSSIBLY have been able to overlook some of the other mistakes if they'd at least got this wrong, but seriously! And besides, the marriage was nullified by Klaus burning the marriage certificate and NOT by Violet signing with her left hand. It's like an important and innovative idea for her to do that! In fact, Jim Carrey (who plays Olaf - curse him for his pathetic acting) actually SAYS to Violet not to sign with her left hand - so they obviously considered putting it in! And they didn't. Shame, shame.
Plus the VFD ankle eye-tattoo. It's meant to be the VFD symbol. Mind you, I can possibly excuse this as if you see the picture at the beginning of Chapter Twelve of The Bad Beginning you see Olaf's ankle, which has the standard eye symbol. Still. And also on the note of VFD - what the hell is with the spyglasses??? They're not anything to do with it. Even in The Grim Grotto it mentions nothing like it. It mentions the sugar bowl, hell how it mentions the sugar bowl, but nothing at all about spyglasses.
And the rescue of Sunny from the tower. It was VIOLET that did that, not Klaus. Klaus was busy researching Nuptial Law (which he never did in the movie in any case) while Violet attempted to free her sister.
Plus the Hook-Handed Man. What is with his hair? It's not meant to be ginger. It's dark - you can see so on the front of The Hostile Hospital, and in a few other pictures elsewhere. Plus his hands don't look like that anyway.
I'm running out of steam here. I have tonnes of other stuff to rant about but for the time being, this is enough. I'll carry on tomorrow or something. Hell. Stupid movie. Hatehatehatehatehate.

I was thinking about the fact that Klaus dosent have glasses and he needs them for the Miserable Mill. And I think I have a solution for it. How about a mandatory eye exam and they find something "wrong" with klaus's eyes and rush him to the optomitris where they hipnotise him. How about that to work around a problem?

missing nin itachi I was thinking about the fact that Klaus dosent have glasses and he needs them for the Miserable Mill. And I think I have a solution for it. How about a mandatory eye exam and they find something "wrong" with klaus's eyes and rush him to the optomitris where they hipnotise him. How about that to work around a problem? i totally agree with you after all he needs the glasses 4 reading not daily life like the **AHEM** Beautiful book...

so i went and watched the director commentary after watching the one w/ lemony AND the director. the director explained that all 3 books (like the rest of them) all end with olaf eventually being discovered and getting away...and the director explains that you just can't do that with a movie because it messes with the flow of it. so they had to add in the train and all that. ANd he added in the stuff at the end because they thought that with such a dark movie it should bring a happy closure to it. and that's that... >_>
