Toko didn't turn arround but have his friend a wave as he walked out of the bar. A few minutes later Laan and Jacob would be able to see The Mythic undock from her berth beside the Ferir and back slowly away from the station before turning in place. He engines lit and she powered away from the station at an angle before clearing the warp perimeter and vanishing with a flash.

The bulk of the DS 12 station was ahead of the HoH'Etlh, approaching slowly as the ship eases foreward.
It had taken a few second to get docking clearance for the aging ship to dock, but it was arranged and the ship was easing into the bay.
A few more seconds of shifting and the small thump as the docking clamps sound indicated the complete docking of the ship.
Once again the crew departed the old ship to relax on the station.
Cho'rukk was as glad to be in more space as the rest of his crew as heads for the bar to start a party.

User ImageLaan nodded to Toko; she liked the idea of actually holding up to the promises to meet someone again and she looked forward to the moment in which they would. She said a quick "Goodbye." but Toko was already far across the noisy bar and her voice was sucked up into the mass. She took his good luck seriously; sometimes she really needed it. Especially with a ship like the Ghorta'.

She turned to Jacob once more, crossing her legs, "So it is. Do you have anywhere you're running off to, as well? I'm afraid I'm stuck here for a little while." She smiled as she said this to prove that that thought didn't really bother her.

She turned to the bar and put her empty raktajino mug on the table, "Steamed earl grey please." She accepted the drink happily, enjoying how much there was to drink, "Yup, I'll be here for a while."

Jacob shrugged, not really sure what his plans were. He'd had an inkling of going on a patrol mission, but it was nothing definite. "Well, I should probably be working on making sure evil space dust doesn't infringe border lines, but noting pressing." He finished off his drink just as Laan finished hers, not asking for another - if he did make his mind up, he didn't want a perfectly good drink to go to waste. He looked at the window the Fenrir was still visible through, and he nodded to himself as the Inari came out of warp, the graceful Intrepid coming in to dock right next to the window. "And you might be enjoying how much this place has on tap, but your bill might just depress you."

"This is the SS Claymore to DS12 I am ready to escort a science vessel to Hephaestus." The Claymore is assigned the USS Sau Paulo to escort and the two ships head off for Hephaestus together.

User ImageLaan smirked, "it's worth it today... Tomorrow I'll regret it; but today I want Earl Grey after raktajino and that's what I'm gonna get." This was followed by a silence in which Laan's mind wandered back in time and she almost forgot her drink-partner. She snapped back into the real world a while later and looked with curiosity at Jacob.

"You're a Captain of a Starship and, yet, you haven't told me one interesting story. Something interesting must have happened well I was out spying on Fuzzballs. The best way to find out is through promenade gossip." She grinned, hoping he didn't take offense to this request.

Jacob just smiled - it wasn't often you met someone who enjoyed their coffee as much as Laan did; too often they were more interested in the more 'valuable' things in life to appreciate the simpler things. When she asked about any story's he had, he had to think, and eventually decided on a very frank reply. "To be honest, Captaining a Starship is 90% boredom, and 10% Armageddon. So most of my stories would be about cargo runs. Only two really stick out - an escort mission to Beta Cestus III, even if it went more smoothly than I thought it would, and two Borg spheres popping up on my doorstep. Take your pick."

User ImageLaan didn't have to think for long, "No matter how much I love Beta Cestus III... I pick the Borg." Her tone up until now had been joking, but she couldn't help but feel her voice crack a little as she realized the intensity of what she had just so lightly commented on.

"An honest to goodness encounter with the Borg... That's not something you hear about, or want to hear about, on a regular basis."

Jacob swallowed thickly, but he knew he'd have to talk about what happened if he ever expected to get over it. "Well, I have to tell you, it just about lived up to all my expectations." His hands fiddled with thin air as he began to talk. "Around about two months ago, my ship - the Fenrir out there - received a distress call from a Mining Station in my Fleet's system, Obsidian. It was pretty broken up, but it was clear that the Borg had taken an interest. I pretty much floored it all the way to Obsidian. When I got there, I wasn't disappointed. A real Borg sphere, hovering in the system, and it wasn't even doing anything - until it began to attack the station. I'm sure I don't have to tell you what Borg can do to stationary targets. So, I opened fire. And the weird thing was, it didn't even react. I got in a good few barrages, not that they mattered much with all that plating, while the sphere focused on getting the station's shields down. When it had, it didn't even beam any drones over, it just beamed all the mined ore in the station's holds. Maybe I should've let it alone, maybe I could've avoided a fight. I didn't, though. Once it had finished, it started to fight back."

User ImageLaan took a sip of her tea and found herself putting the cup back down very slowly, as she got more and more pulled into the story. Her heart, too, slowed down [in it's beating] and her breathing along with it. She, herself, had never come face-to-face with the Borg but it didn't take a lot to understand, as best you could, why you should fear them.

Despite her fear, one thing did stick out at her from the story, "Why were they taking ore?" She asked when he had finished, for a moment, "I thought they were all about 'resistance is futile' and so forth." She stopped talking after that to let him finish.

Jacob laughed humorlessly. "That's the question Starfleet Intelligence has been shoving in my ears ever since - what do the Borg need with eight hundred tons of monocrystal cortentum? The only reason I can think of is they need it for some new weapon of mass assimilation. But three minutes after they had the ore, they had my shields and they had drones aboard my ship. Four ships from the Beta Cestian Alliance had dropped by to help, probably because they knew what the Borg would do if they weren't stopped right there and then. Then Toko arrived, and shoved a barrage of torpedoes down their throats. Another load of fire from the BCA ships took the sphere down." He stopped for a moment, his eyes dark and his face as if stone. "Then its big brother arrived."

User ImageLaan winced. She knew she was getting into dangerous territory by asking anything more. Already she had twisted Jacob's humour into nothing and made him look stone-cold. She knew she should stop the story there but her curiosity was almost painfully huge and so she said, "How did you get out of it?" She added no frilly words or phrases into the question but got straight to the point; seriousness was required at this moment.

Laan had not took one sip of her tea since he started talking and she took one only in fear that it was getting cold. Her mouth seemed dry and tasteless even after drinking a bit.

"The BCA ships. Two of them plowed into the sphere at full impulse. Then, I spun back around and shoved torpedoes down their throats. Boom, went the sphere. And then casualties came rolling in." Jacob looked again at the Fenrir, still hanging outside serenely. "Crew complement of a Defiant class vessel is 50 plus. I lost a fifth of my crew that day, including my fiance. Toko lost his first officer, and many more when hull fragments from the sphere sheared through the Mythic. I don't even know what the BCA ships were like." He leaned back, sighing. "And that's how I met the Borg, Captain Bla'sko."

User ImageLaan wished she had listened to herself when she had warned herself that she would feel bad afterwords because, alas, she did. She took a cautious sip of her Earl Grey and then abandoned it on the bar counter beside her. She watched Jacob, carefully. She had only just met him and yet it was clear to see that thinking of this was not a pleasant experience for him, despite how many times he had or had not tried to 'get over it'.

It remained silent for a while; too silent, and Laan started to feel she should say something. She wanted to apologize for asking, but she knew that probably wouldn't amount to much but awkward silence. She, therefore, went with the only thing she knew how to do and tried to make a joke.

"Your right... I shouldn't have ordered so much to drink; I'm starting to have a very pressing need to pee." She held up her hand, "But don't worry, I'll make sure to find a washroom first."

She attempted a smile and hoped that Jacob didn't find her change of topic offensive. She tried to express with her eyes the sympathy or whatever it was she felt. She hoped he understood. If not, then she supposed she needed some practice with her socialization skills. Tundaria Prime rid her of most of them; perhaps bringing up urine hadn't been a good idea...

Jacob was glad that she hadn't tried to apologize for bringing the subject up - that had happened once or twice, and every time, it left him scaldingly angry. He sent her a weak smile. "I'm sure the owners of this fine establishment would appreciate it." He decided to clear the air a little, move on to a different subject. Before he had the chance to, however, a call came through to him on his combadge. He sent Laan an apologetic look before taking the call. "Captain, the ore's been loaded onto the Renegade. If we want to avoid an overabundance of ore - which is something I'll never get used to saying, thanks, we need to get going." He sighed - he'd forgotten about the ore; then again, that'd sort of been the point of coming to the Last Stop in the first place. "Thanks for reminding me. Try and keep the crew in order until I make my way over, I shan't be too long." He closed the channel and turned back to Laan. "Sorry about that - apparently, I'm needed elsewhere."
