Raleigh dropped the cloth, falling to his knees, clutching his head. "Wah...Why, when we can...? Why are you falling silent? WHY!?!?" He struggled and thrashed as if trying to pull something back to himself.

He paused before shooting. There may have been a minor chance, and he could afford to wait. There was nothing that he could do to take the pistol's sights off of his head, so he patiently waited.

Within Raleigh's mind, contesting the other thoughts, came a vision...
She was amazingly beautiful, a literal Goddess, her only flaw a missing leg. She presented herself to him, her skin a pale alabaster, her long hair flowing like wisps of wind, her crystalline blue eyes haunting and enticing.
"Raleigh," she whispered, her voice a symphony. "My name is Kestril. I can help you, and I need your help. Become my Champion, and I will protect your mind from their poisons."

Raleigh looked up at the goddess and said "Yes...please help us...We accept your offer. We will be one of your champions." Then he shook again, more violently.

She smiled.
"Raleigh, you are my Champion!"
A pure, cleansing light flooded his mind. It did nothing for his pre-existing mental troubles, but the Aberrant urges dissipated without argument. Kestril filled Raleigh's mind with knowledge of all that had transpired between her and Lt'yr, and all that must be done to restore Earth.
"Understand, Raleigh, that my powers are still weak. They will grow as more of this realm is cleansed. I have protected your mind, but I cannot guard your body. You will remain mentally who you are, though your body is subject to change. As my powers grow, I will bless you with new abilities to aid you."
He felt his mind clear, and Kestril began to fade. "Fare thee well, my Champion..."
He returned to consciousness, staring down the barrel of Szon's gun.

Raleigh lay on his back, staring interestedly up at Szon's gun. "You know, if you had fired, you would have missed our brain and probably taken out our nose instead?" He enquired, rolling over, and managing to sit on a pile of rubble.

"We're...as well as can be expect. Mentally, we are normal. I can hear them again." He smiled happily. He was still inwardly worried about the physical changes that were likely to occur from his infection.

Raleigh felt the pain begin, as bone-like growths began pressing out from his chest. They grew into barbed spikes, extending two inches from his skin as they covered his front from below his clavicles to just above his waist.

"Ah, hell." Raleigh groaned. "Now we can't sit happily in a chair. Oh well, at least we didn't get some particularly disturbing alteration.

Szon slowly shuffled back as he holstered his pistol without a word, seeming relaxed despite the changes that were occurring.

The atmosphere in the Zone was eerily quiet, despite the outbreak that had just occurred.
Blocks away to the south, just barely perceptible, sounds of metal clanging against metal could be perceived.
