"Just rest. Besides, I owe you. Now, don't worry about anything or even move. Your body needs complete rest." Kaonna grabbed a gun and went to stand guard by the door just in case someone might try to break in.

Nick nodded, allowing him to slip off into sleep.
He dreamed of that day once again. He watched from hiding as his parents, both of them, were shot by Proletariat soldiers. His parents and himself had stood by the government, and were with a loose, unformed coalition.
He felt the pain again and tried to scream. However, he felt himself running. He remembered that day clearly, moaning as he saw his parents die over and over again. He shook his head and struggled, trying to come out of hiding, to save his parents.
He was forced to watch it again and again...then slowly, the forms changed. His parents became his brother and sister. His brother had fought alongside Nick when the Loyalists had captured the stadiums. His brother was dead now, killed on the successful mission to capture the trains.
He still did. Now he dreamed about the assault. He had been in the assault, and in the final push, his brother had been charging, leading. He had lived long enough to tell Nick not to blame himself...
Nick still did, though. It weighed on his heart, as he had ordered the final assault, given the order that had resulted in his brother's death.
Then his sister...his sister, who had died valiantly when they had come to their current base. He had been with her as well, as if something wanted him to be with his siblings as they died. He had foolishly ordered her into the bank tower with him, and she had sacrificed herself to save him.
He couldn't wake up. Something wouldn't let him as he relived his losses over...and over...

Kaonna watched on as Nick cried out. He looked like he was in great pain, but she knew she mustn't disturb him because he needed whatever rest he could get. An hour went by and no signs of intruders yet and Nick seemed to still be asleep. Just then, Kaonna heard the sounds of footsteps.

Nick heard the footsteps as well, and was brought out of sleep by reflex. A pain in his left arm told him he shouldn't move, but his right arm groped for his gun. "Someone's here..."

"Be quiet and don't move." Kaonna reached for a broom that happened to be by her somewhat. The door opened swiftly as Kaonna swung the broomstick at the intruder. He was knocked to the ground instantly, but arose quickly in order to defend himself. He swung his gun at Kaonna and hit her wounded shoulder. Holding the broom in one hand, Kaonna punched with one arm and then jabbed the man with the broomstick. Kaonna quickly dropped the broomstick and took her opportunity to wrestle the gun away from the stranger. She managed to do so and then held it on the man. He tried to get it out of her hands, but she shot him, killing him instantly. Kaonna closed the door and made sure to barricade it and lock it as best she could.

Nick muttered something again then spoke as best he could. "I don't care if you hurt me...but get the bullets out. You need to do that so the wound can heal properly and not be infected. I know they're lodged in there...that's what makes it painful to move my arm, mainly..."

"I'm not that great with medical care, but if you tell me what to do then I can do it. I have something that might help with the pain too." Kaonna glanced over and looked for the items she'd need.

Nick nodded. "You'll need a pair of tweezers, a dish to put the bullets in, likely something to kill the pain, and some gauze and tape or something to bind the wound in."

"Okay...here goes." Kaonna reached for the tweezers and the medicine that she knew would ease the pain. She gave the medicine to Nick and began the painful process of removing the bullet. When she was done, she bandaged it and said, "Continue to rest up and I'll see what kind of supplies I have around here. That way I know how long we can last before I can take you to your compound or wherever else is safe."

Nick's eyes were closed tightly from the pain, but he nodded, just as he began to slip off into sleep again.

Seeing Nick falling into sleep, Kaonna took the opportunity to search for supplies. She found enough to last for quite awhile. While searching, Kaonna found something she thought she'd never even think of seeing. She found a picture she had painted in second grade of her and her parents. On the back was a picture of her family. Her mind warped back to the memories of her parents before they had given her to her aunt. They had all been so happy. She could hear her father calling out her name...Kaji...He was the only one to ever call her that. He had called her Kaji, or fire, because of her fiery nature and her love of fighting skill. She loved that name. Kaonna was snapped back to reality and she decided to rest awhile, just in case she made need to fight again.

Nick dreamed of his only love, anothe rpainful loss. She had been killed on another raid he'd orchestrated, the failed attempt to capture the hospital. He remembered her death and just mouthed the silent "No" that he'd screamed when he'd seen her shot. She had been smiling...her last words to him had been "I love you." Thinking of her brought more pain to his heart, as he would give anything to have her back.

Kaonna heard Nick's soft no and went to his side. She waited for him to wake again, knowing there was something different about his small cry. Kaonna guessed that something haunted his past just as things haunted hers.

He had wanted to die then.
He had been standing there holding her, and it had been only by the help of one of the line commanders that he was alive. He mouthed in real life while screaming in the dream as he held his love's lifeless body. "Let me die...let me die...she is dead and I wish to be with her...let me die..."
His army had known him then. They knew he was mentally unstable and they had locked him up away from weapons, under guard until he could get over his loss. He saw the dream fade, realizing he never truly had gotten over it. He saw himself wrestling out of the commander's arms and diving in front of the bullets, being cut to the floor, but he felt a searing pain in his arm as he opened his eyes slowly. He was alive, his love was dead...and he was hurt.
