Her lips pushed together in a thin line for a moment before she answered. "I thought it was just ... us goin' to th'beach and then the movies it ..."
The finger tracing stopped for a moment and returned. "I didn't really think you like ... I dunno, felt that way."

God, why did he open his mouth? Jack didn't know what was worse: the implication that he sucked at making a date feel like a date, or the implication that she didn't feel anything about it either way.
"You're so ******** dense," he griped half-heartedly. "Or maybe it's my fault. Haven't actually dated in a while."

"Oh Jack," she said in a somewhat half-hearted coo. "You don't wanna do that, man."
Her hand stopped on his shoulder, resting on the crook of his neck. "M'sure there's lots of pretty girls who'd be down t'date you right." That's what this was all about after all; Jack said it himself. He hadn't dated in a while so he was picking the first thing that fell into his lap.
Chel didn't have the confidence to think she could actually be what he needed.
"S'not yer fault." It never would be.

He bristled at her tone, but it was too late in both senses of the word. He wished she didn't like touching so much. He wished he didn't like it.
"Stay for pancakes," Jack insisted, veering them back to his first point in hopes of salvaging his pride before the night ended. "S'all I'm asking."

"I said I would," she responded.
She could read every emotion on his face, but couldn't bring herself to acknowledge his feelings properly.
On the surface it was because she didn't know if she could do a relationship properly without sleeping with someone else and growing detached.
If she was really honest it was because she didn't think she deserved one.
"Why're you- ..." she asked him, but it faltered. She gave him a chance; Chel leaned forward and put her head into his side, gesturing he turn over so it would be his chest instead. "What do you want Jack?" That was the question, after all. Not how she felt about it; what did he want of her?

He sighed deeply through his nose before acquiescing, sliding an arm under his pillow as he turned over. Why not indulge at this point?
"I'm cool. You'd benefit from my coolness. Let's date." He was too tired to try and mince words further.

"I cheated on my last girlfriend two weeks in," she said with a hollow laugh into his skin. "Yer askin' the wrong person Jackles."
Not a yes, not a no. Just: reconsider.

Jack had wondered what had happened between those two. "Why?" he asked quietly.

Chel actually let out a small laugh. "Yeah if by fallin' out you mean I banged someone else an' felt bad so I dumped her."
All in the span of two weeks.
"M'not a good date, Jack." And by that she really meant not a good person, but she was fine sticking with crude examples of an ex-girlfriend and an oblivious beach outing.

Jack closed his eyes, squeezed them a little. There was an inner conflict of well I'm better than her so that won't happen and how can you trust someone who does that and at least she's being honest and <******** damn it Chel. For someone usually so logical, this irrational response to just shrug it off was unexpected. The trust between friends versus a personal and quiet paranoia that she'd do it to him too.
Or, quite simply, he was too sleepy to care about the consequences.
"Let me be the judge of that," he murmured after a while, brushing her arm in a rare initiation of contact.

For a moment she let herself be taken by it. By the idea that this time would be different.
But when so many times had been set out to be different, they all started feeling the same.
"Jaaack," she murmured quietly, almost a plea if it didn't sound so mellow. "S'not you m'worried 'bout. I don't ... I don't want t'end up doin' somethin' so shitty t'you too. Yer a good guy. Yer goin' places." Which implied, of course, that she wasn't. She worked at Seven-Eleven and got drunk on Mondays. That wasn't the kind of person that got into a committed relationship. "M'not about to lose that over a summer fling."

He wanted to ask her why she acted like something would always happen, why she would decide to do it or resign herself. Chel, the one who was practically a daredevil, or at least had a devil-may-care attitude. Was she just legitimately not interested and hiding it? (Maybe that was it, something more than just a simple no that he couldn't work around.)
"Sleep on it," he suggested, determined not to end the conversation without something to salvage.
