Just saw on FB that my brother gave one of our grandfather's cameras to his girlfriend who may or may not be gone in a few years. It could even be mine. Classsy, bro.

I need to booby trap my room at home with a crossbow so people stop breaking into it while I'm gone.

This is a site I like to go to to read scary stories. Lately they've been kind of bad, though. People who write creepypastas seem to have trouble being original.

If people like this link, I have all sorts of stuff like this. My friends get tired of me pushing scary stuff on them.

It could just be that I'm kind of picky after having read so many.

It also always seems like the ones that I end up liking, other people hate. They always hate it for stupid reasons, too, like, "This would never happen in real life." Newsflash: None of these stories ever have, could have, could, can, will, or ever will happen.

It's funny because I'm in film school and they always talk about writing vs real life. Truth is stranger than fiction and fiction has to make sense; reality doesn't.

Well, and it's just like, fear IS irrational. It doesn't make sense. Why should stories that play at fear make sense? What's your stance on that?

Anyway, here's one of my favorites:

Coffins used to be built with holes in them, attached to six feet of copper tubing and a bell. The tubing would allow air for victims buried under the mistaken impression they were dead. In a certain small town Harold, the local gravedigger, upon hearing a bell one night, went to go see if it was children pretending to be spirits. Sometimes it was also the wind. This time, it wasn't either. A voice from below begged and pleaded to be unburied.

"Are you Sarah O'Bannon?" Harold asked.

"Yes!" The muffled voice asserted.

"You were born on September 17, 1827?"

"Yes!"

"The gravestone here says you died on February 20, 1857."

"No, I'm alive, it was a mistake! Dig me up, set me free!"

"Sorry about this, ma'am," Harold said, stepping on the bell to silence it and plugging up the copper tube with dirt. "But this is August. Whatever you are down there, you sure as hell ain't alive no more, and you ain't comin' up."

oh man, I remember when I first learned about that. The people who would watch for the bell ringing at night is where the term "graveyard" shift came from.
I think it's always cool when fiction has elements of reality in it because it makes the whole thing feel more believable.
Fear is irrational. That said, irrational fear in fiction that I don't personally share just makes me feel detached from the protagonist. I always find irrational protagonists stupid and unrelatable. I don't know why. It's just me personally though. I remember watching Working!! and not relating to Inami's androphobia at all. It even explained why she was afraid but I just didn't enjoy the fact that they spent half a season trying to fix this girl's completely irrational fear and not making any progress at all. It just frustrated me.

Yeah, I agree with that. The character's actions should make sense, sort of like what the gravekeeper in that story did. I just mean something like a voice talking to you from a grave. Obviously, that never happens, but there's always some irrational part of you asking, "what if?"

Just the general concept of most scary stories would never happen. That's why they're so scary to us, imo.
