Is your project the top picture of the bottom 3D picture? If it's the second one that's a 3D map of the base, that's actually looking pretty awesome, but we can't really use it for navigation with image mapping, but we'd probably definitely use it in threads and maybe even the main guild page. Hmm, do you still have layers to add to it or something? Or is it going to stay as a grey draft image like it is presently? Hmm, I must say, I'm impressed by it so far and I'll be keeping a eye on your progress. 3nodding

Yes that big grey thing is what I've been slaving at. what I planned to do was take a top down view and then image map that. Once I finish all of the buildings and what not, I plan to texture it all and add lighting etc. I might even attempt doing a night view of the base and place spotlights in all of the towers and smaller lights around the base walls etc.

I am sure you could use it for image mapping. Just select each little section and let that be the places. It shouldn't be that hard.

Now that would be pretty sweet with textures and perhaps even a night view of the base.

@6pack1: I had to image map the 2D base map that we have now and it took literally hours since I wanted it to be good quality without any broken "empty" pixels that took you to a broken link or something, everything is mapped down to the pixel, every single pixel will take you to a place without a broken link somewhere like many image mapped banners does sometimes. Image mapping a 3D base would be very difficult since it is 3D afterall, trying to do the lines and boxes would be a nightmare honesty, since lines cut off and start to give it that 3D look and when you image map, you have to map it in boxes with coordinates. But perhaps it can be done, not sure if Tyshalle knows how to image map or not, but if he does, he could always send the php documents to me and I could put them up on the server that I use for the current base map, since it seems alot of file uploading sites don't support php, it was difficult finding the one I have now. xp

I've found a couple image mapping programs one I just snagged randomly, and the other is a thirty day trial of a profesional mapper which I haven't tried yet, one of which should suit my purpose.

I didn't use a program, just the php script for image mapping. People use color code image map programs, where they paint in say an area that they designate will take you to this link or that link, but the problem with the programs is that they usually don't get as accurate as doing it using the script. But if you try it and find a good program that can map every single pixel successfully without any problems, please share which program you used afterwards, since it could benefit those who wish to get into image mapping. 3nodding

I know it's none of my Business, sir, but what's a 3D Render of the Base?

Go take a look. [1st page] A render is basicly a picture of a 3D model.

I have had experience, albeit it small, in image-mapping. I had to in my Web Design class.

All you need are the coords of each corner. Go to paint and make a box around each building and then link via HTML.

But you only need to do the visible part, don't do multiple boxes, or polygons, do a 2d image map of a 3d base. Do it right and it wouldn't feel any different.

It IS only a 2d image. It isn't like you have to spin it around to map it. I know that may seem like how it is, however you may be thinking something else, but yeah, all you need is a 2d image map to a 3d image.

EDIT:

Something like this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v734/6pack1/BaseOfSteelMkII.jpg

Blue= Buildings
Red= Watchtowers
Brown= Wasteland

You would link all buildings to Blue
You would link the Watchtower thread to Red
You would link the Wastelands Subforum to Brown

However, you would only use the coordinates given at the top left corner and bottom right corner. So, if you want to, you can save the picture and then find the coordinates, and then link it.

EDIT:

I took out the img so my image won't be uber huge.

Aside from it being nowhere near completion, of course, and each building linking to a diffrent place.

That is pretty kewl! Huh? Wheres the Airfield? I cant fly out without a Runway of sorts...NOOOO! gonk Anyways, I remember a program called Blender that made this stuff..but Last time I tried Blender though....it didnt come out right. crying Overall, this would be a great change for the Guild though. Keep it up!

Nice job Tyshalle. Is that Lightwave that you're using for that? And I am to presume that you'll be adding textures and whatnot?

And if you like, as soon as I get 3Ds Max again (which could be a looong time from now) I can try my hand at making a base as well, I suppose just for fun.

Yes, I know what you mean, it is a 2d image afterall. But I don't think you quite get what I'm referring to, that with a 3d image on a 2d surface, lines are slanted, lines cut off, etc. to give it that 3d look on a 2d surface. For example, the image that you posted, I wouldn't accept it as a mapped base, especially on the buildings and how they'd be mapped. You could click on the corner of the building and it'd be a broken/blank link or the default link that takes you to the wasteland when that building, anywhere you click on it should take you to say auxilium division. Look at our current map of the base, try click absolutely anywhere, on anything, every single pixel is mapped out. The wall itself was mapped with 33 boxes, going down to the pixel, making it absolutely perfect and that's just the walls. Many use auto image mapping programs that does all the work for you, which is the bulk of image mapped banners on gaia, which usually you say draw for example six boxes, it automatically makes the coordinates for those boxes, you link them up, then make a default link where if you don't click on those specific boxes, it'll take you to a default page like say your profile. Now that's a really quick and easy way, but honestly, poor quality since it leaves places on it where you may click and it takes you absolutely no where. I just like perfection in maps and would expect a base map that is going to be a image map, being mapped down to the very last pixel, even if it looks two hundred percent better than our current map graphic wise, but it's overall purpose would be poor quality since a image map is designed to take you to certain links without having empty spots there, even if it's just one pixel in the corner. But meh, you know me, I'm just picky about detail, but so far, his map is looking great, I just don't really see a way to map it all without some form of auto image mapper where you draw the boxes and it automatically does all of the coordinate work, which you have to have a very steady hand for those, which is why I dislike them, people screw up all to often on the automatic ones.

@Tyshalle: I have a question, are you going to write the names on each building or are you just going to kinda color code it or something? Not certain on what you're planning, also, what about the airfield like darkshadow92 pointed out?
PostPosted: Thu Jul 20, 2006 1:18 am

Again, it's not done, nor is it particularly near completion, the way you're talking it sounds like yo uihink this is the final product, it's not. The airfield will be added later, I'll probably put the names on the buildings, or create a key. And yes, I am using Blender.

And Ender if you could edit that picture out of his post that would be ideal, if I wanted it in the middle of the thread I would have posted it there.

Just wondering. I mean Hell, for the purposes of which it'll be used, if you just slopped on colors to all the buildings you'll have the best designed base in all of Gaia. What else do you plan on doing though, if you don't mind me asking?
