Need help on a sketch; my first attempt at a more detailed male subject in a long time. Something about his torso in particular is bothering me.

You're drawing Poison Arrow? He's got one massive art jones. ...right, then. Moving on. xd

-The reason you think his torso seems odd is because of the proportions. His arm would reach his belt (!) at the elbow. Also, his navel should be at three headlenghts.
-His left wrist is too skinny, even viewed from that angle.
-If his arm were held up like that, the buttons would be pulled in that direction slightly.

Hope that helped! whee Love the feel of this!

Heres the tasteful nudity pic I had drawn, but now that I look at it its not as tasteful as I had thought. sweatdrop

I know I messed up on the hands, and possibly the proportions. Please, help me however you can, especially on the hands. 3nodding

AD - thanks. Yeah, I didn't mean for it to be him, but it kinda came out that way. o.O I started out drawing one of my commissions. But I DID tell Sabin and Poisey I'd at least put a token entry into their contest...my duty as a fellow guild member, and all that. ^^

Ah yes, the buttons. I knew the fabric should be there but I forgot the buttons!! xd The arm proportions have been throwing me, because I suck at foreshortening, and his right arm is in a bad position for me.

The wrist I am also concerned about...since they're from different angles, shouldn't they be different thicknesses accordingly? It does look too thin though. Hmm.

And um, what do you mean by his arm would reach his elbow? It needs to be longer? *is confused* I don't know male proportions. crying crying crying

OK Sj...so far, this is what i can say abou it (other from what A.D. pointed out earlier)

User Image

his joint should be approx. five pixels (or more) wider on each side of the joint drawn, to make the illusion of proximity (or in this case quite the opposite)

just like the picture above, the male and female bodies have certain places that do not change radically between the sexes...and that is the length between arms/forearms and legs/thighs ...

yes, we all know they look bigger, but in consideration with the human body, they only look bigger in males because of the width of the muscle tissue accumulated on said body parts.

also, to make you arm shorter, and keep the pose a close similarity to it, try playing with the elbow joint... if you look at the picture, you see the arm/forearm meet at the elbow at a 90 degree angle... if you did that with your body, your hand would float above your head about 5-6 inches above the intended target (your head!)

try shortening the arm/forearm meeting place, by decreasing the angle at which the elbow is pointed out... you can do it with your body, and once you try the pose for yourself, i'll bet you'll figure out just exactly what i mean 3nodding

and now... Koji's pic... i'll comment it on another post sweatdrop

OK...now for Koji's picture.... (i wonder if i should put it here or not..so please, A.D. or Lang... do edit my post and make the picture be a link instead if you deem it too excessive even though to me it isn't :/ )

here we go sweatdrop

User Image

one thing i will say is wow Koji, the shoulders look nice in that pose 3nodding ... now onto the fingers and hands...

on the right, you see three colors... those three denote where the bones of the index and thumb are in the picture...

now take your own hand, put it in an open palm (with the thumb touching the side of the index finger bone running through your hand) and tell me what do you see happening with your thumb?

if you cool closely, the joint after the thumb-knuckle reaches near or exactly where the indexes' knucle is... in your picture, that joint would be near the first index finger joint after the index knuckle... that isn't right... to solve it, try shrinking the thumb itself from the thumb joint down to the thumb knucle till you see it flows the same way it would if you did that same pose the girl in the pic is doing. 3nodding

now for her OTHER hand... look at your own hand... do you see the lines between the index/middle/and ring fingers in your hands when in an open palm? ... the lines you drew in the picture compared to your own hands? ... the lines between the middle/ring fingers end at the same height where your index/middle lines end... before the middle finger knucle... to fix this in your picture, try to not denote the knucle that much by erasing part or that line, till you can see it matches your own hand's line...OR make your index finger's knuckle be bigger in turn :/ ....

it might be possible you could have not understood THIS post..as i'm trying to the best of my ability to explain body parts that i know the names in spanish quite properlly ... but use your hands as a guide and remember to look closely at how the open palm usually looks like since it is one of the trickiest parts to draw on a picture other than the face....

as a bonus, Koji, there's a little thing it seemed to qwirk me with your picture...and it's her left eye (our right) placement... between spaces, her eyes look like they're apart by about 2 inches (normally, our eyes are apart from each other by one inch 3nodding )

to solve it, using any editing program, you can move the eye to where it should go... in order to not have to re-draw the picture again 3nodding

Nijyou... u_u;;;

Yes, the wrist should appear thinner, but not quite THAT thin, since the hand isn't viewed from the side. (not lying flat, in other words)

I mean that if he were to lower his arm, his elbow would be at his belt. I don't know about you, but my elbows don't reach my belt (not on my non-Neaderthal days, anyhow xd ). I'm saying that his arm appears to be too long. I think the problem is that there's too little chest width. The chest part should extend more to the right, thus making the arm shorter. Make sense? sweatdrop

Your style looks just like a friend's from my old art BBS, years ago. It's a bit creepy. o.O

Anyway, I think Shiro did a good job of explaining the hands. If you have any more concerns about those, just look in a mirror. Or use a webcam if you have one; they're absurdly helpful for taking reference pictures.

Thanks, I feel better about the hands now. 3nodding

AD- Seriously? o.o Dunno, I drew this picture a bit out of my style. xp I liked how I did it though, I might try and switch myself around...

Thanks for clearing that up guys.

And yes, my ebows actually DO reach my belt...but that's probably because I have a short torso. sweatdrop I think I know what to fix now. 3nodding

Yes, I may be new to this guild, but I want some of my art critiqued...
So here's one of my peices: Its a drawing of one of the main characters from a book I'm writing.

I'm trying to find out if there's something wrong with it.

Primarily, I think the most noticeable thing about your art is the way you color it. Are you using a computer program or real media of some kind?

I use the quarters systems for feature placement. Starting at the top, 1/2 is the eyes, 3/4 is the bottom of the nose, 7/8 is the mouth... I think the nose should be a bit higher.
-The mouth is angled too far down on the left side, even though her head's bent at an angle.
-The eye shape doesn't look natural. I'm assuming your character isn't Asian (if she is, that's still a different shape), so I've drawn a more realistic eye shape below yours.
-The hair seems to flop down, as though it's damp at the bottom. Make sure the hair flows throughout.
-Also, the strap from her tank top shouldn't blend into the top of her shoulder; it should be a bit higher.
-I think the piece would look much better if you cleaned up your lines before coloring. Maybe you should look into inks?
-The hand looks really good, so no crits there.

Look into getting a Photobucket account; they don't put any text on the images.

Thanks AD! I thought my art needed some touch up... I just got an ink set with a good bunch of pens, and I'm setting myself to work perfecting my art with them. It looks alot better, but I still haven't made something worth posting with it sweatdrop . Anyway, I did use Photoshop Elements 2.0 to color the pic... is that a bad thing that you can't tell? Is noticable a good thing? sweatdrop I try to make it look realistic when it comes to shading (I don't like the blockiness anime shading gives a peice). Anyway, I've always had problems coloring hair. I just saw that coloring hair technique that's on the site yesterday... and I will put it to good use! NEXT TIME!! *laughs manaically*
Then I may do a remake of this, with better coloring and cleaner lines. And thanks for the thing about the hand! I spent a dew minutes in front of a mirror looking at how it looked in that position, that apparently payed off. And photobucket is not accepting new accounts until the 1st, so I'll wait a bit. Anyway, thanks for the critique!

Mmmkay, this is a picture of my friend's gaia avatar. I know the pose looks kinda awkward (no right buttcheek, right leg looks weird, and the right arm is kinda resting on nothing), and I'm not sure if the body is proportional. Just a few things that I can see wrong with it that I don't know how to fix.

And, erm, aside from proportions, could somebody let me know how the shading is? If it's bland and needs more depth, if it's shaded wrong, blah blah blah...? I just want to know because I'm trying to make my shading more unique and such, I think that'd help me if/when I do art auctions. x3

wtf?! I posted, then it said I double-posted, so I deleted, and now BOTH are gone. *twitch*

And no, everyone, I haven't gone to bed yet.

You pretty much nailed all the things I would have pointed out. (Well, that an her elbow seems to be bent IN. o.O) I've done some Quick Crap Shading and Highlighting to give you an idea of what stronger contrasts would be like. I think if you were a bit more severe in your shading, it would give your art more realism and depth.
