You build little worlds, little stories, little shells around your mind and that keeps infinity at bay and allows you to wake up in the morning without screaming! – A Hat Full of Sky
"All right," said Susan, "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need ... fantasies to make life bearable." No. Humans need fantasy to be human. To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape. "Tooth fairies? Hogfathers?" Yes. As practice. You have to start out learning to believe the little lies. "So we can believe the big ones?" Yes. Justice. Mercy. Duty. That sort of thing. "They're not the same at all!" Take the universe and grind it down to the finest powder and sieve it through with the finest sieve and then show me one atom of justice, one molecule of mercy. And yet you act as if there were some sort of rightness in the universe by which it may be judged. "Yes. But people have got to believe that or what's the point—" My point exactly. – Hogfather
"Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder. Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels. Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies. Elves are glamorous. They project glamour. Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment. Elves are terrific. They beget terror. The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake..." Nobody said elves were nice. Elves are bad. – Lords and Ladies

The man had been killed by being repeatedly hit arround the head. That was about all you could say. Some kind of heavy blunt instrument.*
*It is a pervasive and beguiling myth that people who design instruments of death and up being killed by them. There is almost no foundation in that fact. Colonel Shrapnel wasn't blown up, M. Guillotine dies with his head on, and Colonel Gatling wasn't shot. If it hadn't been for the murder of cosh and blackjack maker, Sir William Bluntinstrument in an alleyway, the rumor would have never got started.

All tribal myths are "true," for a given value of true.

Necronomicon ex Mortis Is the one quote concerning what the "Trousers of Time" are in here? I think so.

[Library Magi] "And the armour stays here?" Qu beamed. "Yes, Your Grace. Everything. Eyepatch, socks, everything." "Boots, too?" "Yes. Everything." "What about my drawers?" "Yes, those too. Everything." "So I'll arrive in the *nuddy*?" "The one costume that's in fashion anywhere," said Sweeper, grinning. ~Night Watch Sam Vimes returns home I just have to say, only on the Disc does timetravel include running around a city looking for a doctor totally naked. Not only on the Disc...in the Terminator movies, time travelers arrive sans equipment, including clothing, as well. I just can't see Sam Vimes striding up to some Discworld equivalant of a biker and saying "Give me your clothes." A slight Austrian accent helps here... Oh wait, I'm nitpicking. I must be having a Senior Wrangler moment.

"Well, thank you," said the Dean behind them. "I feel lovely and dry now, and I never did like my eyebrows all that much."

I must be having a Senior Wrangler moment. I've never seen Terminator, so I guess I just missed a hilarious cultural reference there. Damnation. Has anyone done this - While walking around, you notice something that makes a joke in a Pratchett book that much funnier. You burst out laughing. Everyone stares. You attempt (And fail miserably) to explain.

Much, much too often...
My wife has read a couple of Pratchett books, but it's not really her style. So whenever I am reminded of something he's written, and go to tell her about it, she just rolls her eyes....

"But the helmet had gold decoration, and the bespoke armorers had made a new, gleaming breastplate with useless gold ornamentation on it. Sam Vimes felt like a class traitor every time he wore it. He hated being thought of as one of those people that wore stupid ornamental armor. It was gilt by association." Night Watch

"I'd like a couple of eggs," sad Vimes, "with the yolks real hard but the whites so runny that they drip like treacle. And I want bacon, that special bacon all covered with bony nodules and dangling bits of fat. And a slice of fried bread. The kind that makes your arteries go clang just by looking at it." "Tough order," said Harga. "You managed it yeserday."
