Well, for canter, I was pretty much riding in two-point most of the time, so the leaning forward is justified, but the trotting.. *pokes hunter riders for second opinion* I mean, we're SUPPOSED to lean forward just a little; I'm just wondering if I was doing it too much.

I feel so useless trying to help you out and critique you. Yay for when Dressage experience is useless.

:go sits in corner: rofl heart

(You look like you're leaning a bit too much, but once again, compared to Dressage, it may just appear that way to me because we're straight up ad down, no leaning at all.)

And Mel rides Western, which is why I'm scraping for advice/critiques from the hunter riders... *sigh* biggrin (Aria, where are yoooooouuu! xp )

Hehe, awww, it's okay. *pat pat* You're not useless! biggrin I loves joo. <3 (Is it just me or does your avatar undergo a COMPLETE change like every 2 days? xd )

Okay, talking to one of my expertly-like friends and we've decided that I'm leaning a bit far forward, mostly due to the fact that my arms are short, so in order to keep 'correct' hand position near the withers, I have to be leaning that far forward. So we've decided that I'm going to ditch the hand position because a judge wouldn't be THAT picky, and work on sitting up straighter and working on a slightly longer rein. ^__^

Yeah.. I get bored easily with my av. I'm going for the trendy 'hippie' look right now. rofl

And that makes sense about the arms thing. You might try finding some longer reins too, maybe that'll help?

the avi - hehe, I can tell. xd

Oh, no, my reins are PLENTY long. (You can see the excess drooping off to one side in the picture rofl ). It's me. I'm going to experiment around the next time I ride; I may just need to straighten my arms some. Hell, I may have just been leaning because I was so dizzy from being slammed in the head, I don't know. I'll have to see. o__o

IDEA! Inspriation struck me the other day when I rode Lucky smile

When you ask Silver to go on the bit try putting your hands outside his withers. Its going to feel really weird but I'm working on the same thing right now and it really does work-trust me. My trainer explained it to me like this: Think of your hands like a funnel and you need to channel his energy up through his hind end and into his frame. When he puts his head and neck in the correct position then he can fully use all of that energy and correctly use himself whereas if he just puts his head up, its going to just get harder for him. Once he gets the idea about collection you can gradually put your hands back in the correct position. Hope this might help!

(oh and Darkeenya, I like the new avy razz )

sounds bazzre and it feels even more unnatural but somthing about putting your hands farther appart does something for the horses...trust me, I don't get it eaither but its seemed to work well enough for me, hopefully it will work for you too! smile

Anyone into jumping, hunting, showing hunters, etc., should read Bill Steinkraus' books.

http://www.showjumpinghalloffame.net/inductees/w_steinkraus.shtml This is a short (one page) bio of him. He was top of the world (ma), and a great trainer, teacher, competitor. It lists his major book, Riding and Jumping.

I think his best book is Reflections on Riding and Jumping, written later.

Bill was sort of an opponent of George H. Morris, though they were not enemies. He opposed George's somewhat exagerated 2-point position, and with great humor, demonstrated in the latter book the proper position (himself in the photos).

You have to make up your own mind on what seat to use, plus take into consideration what modern judges prefer. But frankly, I think Morris is into style more than correctness. Steinkrause is a straight shooter, basing his theories on serious experience (more wins at the top than George), logic and deep study.

Wait, why am I being asked for advice on hunters? Since when have I been a hunter? *is greatly confused* I'm the dressage/eventer. I can give you practical advice on jumping, but I know nothing about the stylistic aspects of the hunter world, because, frankly, I get really sick of it really quickly. Especially going to a school that is mostly hunters, I regularly want to grab them by the throat and just scream at them...

Not that all hunters are bad, of course. smile I just... don't have a particular love for the style.
