wow, well, my view on that sort of thing, mari, is that no religion is perfect, but it's wrong to insult someone because of their beliefs at all, i disagree with many religions, but they play a great part in society in that a member of a congregation can go to his or her minister/priest/whoever clergyperson and ask moral questions, and that clergyperson exerts a positive influence and most of the essence of preaching is morality, and that you should be a good person, and and, damn i lost my train of thought and sunday school is a wonderful thing, religious education is basically great, the idea of an institution almost entirely devoted to teaching children moral values, i believe the world would be a better place if more people went to church, but i disagree with a lot of the "have faith" stuff, but that's just me. anyway that's just my two cents

also, the stuff about the priests and stuff doing that crap is pretty bad, but i'm willing to bet anyone that there is much less of that among a church than out in the rest of the world

and tj, you refer to your parents as catholic, but then you say you just mean it as a fact, and not an insult, if it's just a fact, and doesn't mean anything, you don't need to say it, the rules ask that we avoid political issues, and i think the essence is that we shouldn't voice strong opinions about controversial issues because they are controversial and can be divisive. i think that most of us here can be fairly adult about it and that a good civil argument is a wonderful thing, but it's not mine to decide, so just go with it
