Actually, it doesn't affect you. You don't have to watch it in English.

I would think that the idea of dubs would be good for you. I mean, the fact that a dub exists means that more people can have access to the series then usual (not everyone understands japanese, and not everyone can find japanese versions with subs, unless it's bundled in with the dubbed version). As well, this means that the anime industry in general is making more money and can thus afford to supply more anime to people, be it through additional merchandise, or by producing new animes.
In economic terms; dubs allow anime to be distributed to people who would usually be unable to watch it. This means there is a higher demand for anime, which increases the supply of the anime. If there was a low demand for anime, then companies would have to charge more to make a profit, and thus anime would be expensive. So dubs=good, but whether you choose to watch it or not is ultimately still your choice ^_^.

If people fail to have enough money to buy simple DVDs, it doesn't seem likely that they'll have a decent computer. If you're that desperate for money, I doubt you'll be paying for that internet connection, let alone that computer. Not to mention the fince for being caught with illegal downloads is like... $10,000. If you got unlucky enough to be one of those people caught for that, you'd be out of luck.

DVD players aren't that expensive (I got mine for $100 canadian, and it works fine), as well, many game systems can play DVDs now as well, so people who have a system, but no internet (or cannot get an internet connection due to where they live) could watch DVDs. Yes, a computer can be cheap too if you know how to build them yourself, or only need so much to get by, so depending on one's circumstances, it may be simpler to go with the internet.
As for the importing thing; not everyone has credit cards or enough money to import direct from japan themselves. Most of the merchandise I get has to come through specialty shops who order the merchandise for me (as long as they order in bulk, they don't really incur any additional shipping fees to what they would usually pay; so as long as I'm willing to wait, I don't have to pay shipping fees ^_^). I whole-heartedly support importing direct if possible, as there are many things available only in Japan that I would want to get my hands on (GSD Meteor Pack Model, Fate/Stay Figurines, SRW games), but not everyone has access to those means, and being able to buy from local stores is always better (less currency exchange rate issues, and less chance of losing the item during shipment).
And Fansubs exist because people wish for the anime to be licensed and distributed. There hasn't been a single Fansub I've seen that hasn't asked its viewers to please support the effort to get the anime in question dubbed, and have asked repeatedly that people get rid of their subs the moment the anime is available for legal purchase. Anime will continue to exist without foreign distributers, but anime culture as we know it in those foreign lands will be forever changed. Think about it; if there hadn't been a single anime ever distributed in english, do you think as many americans or canadians would be watching anime today? Probably not. Anime would be an almost exclusively japanese cultural icon, and would have little to no meaning in the US.
Also, Kagaitsuki makes a fair point about the legal issues regarding fansubs. Many anime series are licensed for foreign distribution even before they are released in Japan nowadays (Fate/Stay for example), which means that any group besides those with the legal right to distribute it can be fined for it (Anime is meant for all to enjoy, but if no profit is made off of an anime because everyone just downloads them, how long do you think it would take before people stopped producing anime?). Like I said, watching a dub is a matter of personal preference; we aren't trying to force you to like them; but to accept them as a part of anime culture as a whole. Just like with people, 'you don't have to like someone, but you should accept and respect their right to exist.'
But we are definitely getting off topic, so lets keep this off to the side (or at least open a new thread somewhere to discuss this matter in the proper venue).
@ SonicWiz: Yes, Shakugan No Shana is quite the interesting series. I myself got hooked on it because of the concept of torches (though Shana herself was a deciding factor as well 4laugh ). The whole idea of using 'torches' to lessen the damage Tomogara no Guze (or Crimson Denizens, whichever term you prefer) create was intriguing. I especially liked Alastors explanation of torches to Yuuji;
"If the ground you were walking on disappeared, you would fall and receive a shock from the impact. But if we were to replace the ground with ice, it would slowly melt, and lessen the final shock. Think of that ice as a torch."
Or something along those lines; its not a direct quote -_-
