(( stare Soc. concepts. HISS! You paid too much attention to that chapter of the text.))

"Clever," he mused appreciating the fact that 'good' had no concrete definition, "yes, I've read them all. Twice in fact, a few of them three or four times. More than the isolation, it gets boring being a hermit. So what exactly are you hoping to glean from those books you took?"

Aven lowered her eyes so they were fixed upon the back of little man's head.

"I'm not sure," she replied, "magic I suppose and hopefully to decipher some writtings I...discovered."

She felt something stirr deep within her.

"I want to know everything. I want to wield magic and ride on dragons. I want to explore forests and lava fields. I want to hunt unicorns and tame a sphinx! I want to know how to summon flames or an artic wind. I want to know every secret in the darkness. But I can't do that in the castle. Everything is so suffocating. His majesty's mercy is the only reason I'm still alive, but it stifles my creativity," she replied in a bored drawl.

"They make me feel worthlss by telling me I don't earn my keep. Yet every time I try and do something right, Jareth shows up and tells me I should have asked first! They want me to just sit in my room and pretend everything's ok! BUT EVERYTHING IS NOT OK! I want to scream, and throw such a frustrated tantrum that I destroy something! I have gaps in my mind but they expect me to just smile and push it down like everything's just perfect! AS IF THEY'RE EVEN TRYING TO GET ME BACK! I'm sick of them! All of them. None of them want me back, so I'll become someone else."

Her eyes flickered blue for a few moments before dying back down to a cold brown.

(( mrgreen mrgreen mrgreen Not my fault I paid attention. Last post now I leave ok? I got a final today. 3nodding ))

Delos slowed almost to a halt as the girl answered his question with poignant accuracy. Her emotions were violent and unpredictable, yet he knew all too well how she felt. Her proximity gave him an eerie calm that had been there only briefly over the course of the millenium. It was as if there were no more struggles within his mind. The battle between his unseelie and seelie natures had finished and one of them had finally vanquished the other. She was a magnet for unseelie power, and though at some point during his torrid history he might have balked away, Delos found himself accepting the stream of magic. Despite his once irrefutable purity, he was a corrupted being. Aven's potential lured him towards her with promises of rest and peace.

"There much for you to learn," he finally replied as he resumed his gait, "I don't think those books will teach you everything you want. Fae magic is very complex."

Aven rushed ahead so as to block his path. She focused her gaze into his pale white eyes.

"You know it then," she replied seriously, "can you teach me? I mean, if you've read all the books in the castle you could teach me, right?"

Her face was filled with hope and a yearning to learn.

Delos shuffled nervously under her scrutiny. He knew that he had the ability and the knowledge, but if he did he'd be revealing himself to Jareth. Reu was discreet enough, and at first glance all goblins looked alike to the castle servants so his lonely existence was all but assured. Few fae remembered the fair embassador that vanished off the face of the underground long ago and none related the kind man with the portly goblin living on the edge of the forest. As much as he enjoyed the stability Aven brought to his thoughts, he was reluctant to give up his anonymity.

"I-I can't marm," he replied, "I'm just an old goblin, nothing more."

She didn't know how, but Aven could tell he was not being completely honest.

"Goblins are magical, even I know that," she stated grabbing on to his shoulder and knealing to his level, "you've got a lot of wisdom in you. Show me some of it, Delos. I'll do whatever you want. You asked me where I was going, I was honest when I said I didn't know. I was going to search for someone to teach me or I'd learn on my own. I know you can help me. Can I be your apprentice?"

"Fae magic isn't the same. It's refined and potent. Goblins..." he trailed off, "goblin magic is earthy. Still raw as it were, too clumsy to be any good."

Molt shuffled his feet trying to look way from Aven's face. It had been a long time since anyone had touched him or asked him for anything in this manner. It reminded him of a happier time, a time of light. He knew even before she was done speaking he would agree.

"Aye, I'll teach you then," he whispered, "but you I'll keep you to that promise. And keep it low you ken? I don't want you causing a ruckus and bringing the Goblin King down on my head. I've avoided him all these years without someone coming here and ruining it for me."

For the first time in a long while, Aven smiled.

"Yes, I understand," she practically beamed at the little man. Then in a whirlwind of positive emotions she gave the goblin a hug.

"I won't tell anyone, I promise," she said pulling away and standing up. Not far away she saw the main gate of the city. It was locked and much to heavy for her to open by herself. She frowned silently and wondered how Delos managed to get the thing open.

Delos's pale eyes widened and his body tensed. Were it possible for goblins to blush he would have. The ancient goblin was left scratched his head and looked away in embarassment.

"Alright don't get all mushy on me," he replied, "t'isn't going to be easy darkling, and I'm not about to do you any favors."

His clumsy, calloused hands wrung the cloth of his sack as he headedaway from the gate.

"The guards take to the main gate, we'll climb the inner wall and get down some ways off over there," he smiled craftily digging out a knotted rope with a grappling hook on one end from his sack. After attatching his bag to his belt, he picked up the hook and examined it. With movements of an expert he swung the hook over his head a few times before launching it to the top of the wall. After testing the rope he proceeded to place his feet on the wall and climb over it. He had snuck in and out of the city so many times that even with his arthritic joints, Delos was an agile climber. Once atop the wall, the old goblin dusted his hands and glanced down at Aven.

"Come on then," he called down to her in a loud whisper, "you can throw me your knapsack here if you want."

Jareth's snow gently drifted down and started dusting everything. It was a magical snow and any living thing it touched would become whole again, no matter what had heppened to it or how long it had been that way. The only way it wouldn't return was if it truly and deeeply wanted to stay the way it was.

Aven tossed up her satchel and then proceeded to climb after the goblin. The light breeze had become still and the atmosphere had dropped several degrees by the time she had reached the top. As she looked around, she saw the looming castle surrounded by the shanty-town called Goblin City and the mountains of garbage on the other side of the wall. Beyond that was the forest dark and brooding.

"I never thought it would be so big," she breathed and her words came out in a visible puff. A single snow flake drifted down to the city below followed by a second and a third.

Delos caught Aven's bag and patiently waited for the girl to climb. Once she was over the ledge, the goblin gathered up his rope and slung it over his shoulder.

"Fragging snow," he grumbled taking out a cloak from his bag and pulling it over his head. He then drew out a frayed old umbrella and handed it to Aven. "Don't let the stuff touch you, it all comes from Him, y'know. It's the wrong season for snow, it's not even supposed to be here. He probably got bored."

He grabbed her tunic and gave it a few tugs. "Step lively now, there's a broken bit of wall over yonder we can use as a staircase."

Aven opened the umbrella and shielded herself from the flurry of snow. There were small moth holes on the fabric so every now and then a falling crystal filtered through.

"It comes from Jareth?" she asked obediently following the goblin, "I didn't know he was the one who controlled the weather."

The dissonant jarring of the music became muffled under the blanket of snow. In the weak moonlight the white flakes glistened with a silver sheen. Just like the man who had created it, the snow was beautiful in it's pale frailty. A single tiny ice crystal brushed against her cheek and it created a warmth in her chest. A crack formed in the brick wall within her mind and it released a single memory.

Aven gave a startled jump and turned to face Jareth with the grace of a cat who's tail has been trod upon. She looked up at the Goblin king for a few seconds before a frown replaced her surprised expression.

"The place made me think of a story with a blond in it. Actually she reminds me of a certain pyro someone in the labyrinth," she scowled before turning away from him. The professor kept her hands shoved in her pockets so as to not display any weakness. "What about you, sire? Enjoying the entertainment so far?"

Jareth smiled. "Actualy I am. And you're not? Oh I'm sorry." Jareth looked down and noticed Aven hands, he took one gently, looking at it. "How bad are they? I wouln't want you to have trouble making it to the castle..."

Aven looked down at her gloved hand as she recalled that moment. She stopped and slowly raise her eyes to the castle. A haunted expression passed through her eyes as confusing emotions surged unbidden from her mind. More bits of ice pressed against her face and she felt tears threatening to spill. Bits and pieces of thoughts and emotions flew about within her mind as if trapped in a whirlwind.

I love you Jareth.

"I don't think I ever told you that," she whispered to the solemn building, her voice cracking, "and I'm sorry."

Yet despite the beautiful echoes, she knew only disdain from the man in her broken memories. She not bear the stifling restrictions, and whereas before the cold look in his eyes provoked her anger, it now hurt to look upon them.

Delos had noticed that Aven had stopped. He gave out an exhasperated sigh and trudged back towards the girl. The stability of Aven's power was waning and it made the old goblin irritable.

"Snap out of it!" his weathered voice snapped, "It's a spell! His snow is trying to affect you! Now come on before you collapse on me like a pile of soggy bread! If we hurry we can make it past the tree line and then we'll be safe!"

Not stopping to listen to any excuses, Delos grabbed the girl's wrist and led her down a set of cracked pillars which made a sort of step if one knew where to look and where to step. The limber old creature stepped confidently from pillar to pillar skillfully avoiding the optical illusions that led to a sheer fall. Before long they would be in the dump, well beyond Jareth's immediate sensory preception.
