► One Day at a Time ◄

When his eyes fluttered open, Weiss was there smiling grimly at the boy in his bed. "So you've finally woken." It had been two days, apparently he was more tired then expected. For a moment there Weiss felt he might have put more sedative then he should have but it turned out Cada was exhausted and needed the rest. The fever had broken as well though his temperature still remained a little over normal. "You had a fever for a while now too. I managed to get it down..." With one more wring of his cloth in the bucket he set the towel over Cada's forhead. "Name. Now." No room for arguing.

"C-C-Cadaver." Spoken through a croak and on chattering teeth he managed his name.

Weiss snorted. Rather odd name to be sure but he didn't dwell. It wasn't his place. "Cadaver I am Edelweiss, you can call me Weiss. This is my home, my shop is below us." He gave a weak smile but continued. "I know you had plans but I'm of a mind to believe the Goddess wanted me to thwart those plans. Seeing it's a success want to indulge me and tell me what happened?"

With a groan and a sigh, Cada managed his story, going into vague detail. He was travel with his father, helping families with no means of travel. His father was a doctor, specialist in diagnosis and herbal remedies. Apparently Cadaver was tagging along to learn about his trade so he could take over the family business. At some point in their travels, his father got sick and when Cada found out it was an unknown and violent sickness he ran away for a few weeks. When he returned, his father seemed better but the sickness came back with a vengeance and not only his father but many others nearby began to fall ill. Cada didn't go into detail after that but he made it clear that somehow his father and those people getting sick was his doing. Weiss just continued to listen. When Cadaver finished his story he was in tears and his temperature spiked. "Enough. Rest we'll revisit this conversation later." No point torturing the boy. First get his strength back up and then work on healing his heart.

► Let Go! ◄

Setting a plat of food on a tray in front of Cadaver, Weiss sat next to him in a chair while he watched. The kid was like a machine. Slowly eating the soup and taking bits of the bread. He barely drank any water but at least he was making some effort. The poor kid just didn't have it in him to do more than what was necessary. With a heavy sigh he tried to stay calm, tried not to lose his cool but with each passing second, each day it just didn't seem like he was going to make much difference. "You know... I'm not trying to take your father's place. On the contrary I'd rather see you healthy and happy again. Is there anything I can do to help ease the grief?" He wasn't the soft or gentle type. He got results with aggression but this was a delicate situation and he didn't want to put any more stress than necessary on the boy.

"I'm fine." He managed on a croak. His voice still raw and lifeless. Weiss wondered what kind of person he was before all this? He just seemed so out of it, so... not right? When Cadaver placed his spoon down and drank what little more he could of his water, Weiss took his tray. He'd barely touched his food but eating something was better than nothing. For now, Weiss wouldn't push any buttons but soon things would change. He had to address the issue that Cadaver had no legal guardian. Were there people related to him looking for him? Was his father all he had left? He wasn't so sure but if need be, Weiss had already decided he'd watch over Cadaver, make sure he was cared for until he could function properly in society.

Returning to his side he sat next to him, examining the strange indentations on his skin. As if he were breaking out. Hives, some kind of skin disease? He wasn't sure, reaching carefully toward the bandage on Cada's cheek he pulled it slowly away, nearly jumping out of his chair at the site. "By the goddess, kid, your face..." He breathed a sudden twist of his heart reached out of the poor boy.

"It's normal." Cada said placing a hand over his cheek to hide the visible hole there. His muscles, even his teeth were visible, a result of his disease riddled body, his essence in general. A skin disease that ate at the layers had claimed him upon transition to his teenage state. He wasn't sure if it would continue into adulthood but hoped it wasn't going to be too bad. He didn't think turning into a skeleton would be very promising.

"Normal? How is that normal? How long have you had it... doesn't it hurt?" The questions rained down on Cada for obvious reasons but Weiss decided not to continue and just hurried to gather some first aid previsions. Returning to the room he applied a fresh bandage, nervously reaching for the bandage on Cada's neck. With a slow intake of breath he saw what looked like a gash, caused from a serrated knife. It was quite nasty, his skin mutilated and dying... how could he simply accept this? "Cada I can't let you just sit here like this. I'm calling a physician maybe he can help?"

Reaching a hand out, Cada shook his head. "It's normal. Trust me." Sighing heavily he gestured for Weiss to sit. He did, warily. "I told you before. I'm not normal, not human."

"Not Human?"

"I'm a Dust... a being brought to this world to protect you... the humans... that's all I know." And it was the truth. He didn't know much else. It was something most of his kind just understood but anything further seemed to constantly elude them.

"So when I tried to take you back then... when I suddenly felt ill. That was you?" He nodded. "You have... powers?" Another nod. "So what kind of Dust... are you?"

"Pestilence... I cause sickness and disease."

It was then that Weiss put it all together. "Your father?" He reached out to take Cada's hand not at all frightened or worried. He didn't know how it worked but so far he'd been fine taking care of Cada. No sudden illnesses.

"I don't have to actually do anything for someone to get sick. I was always with Papa, learning about medicines and how to heal so I wouldn't be a threat to everyone. He eventually wasn't immune to me anymore. It caught up with him. There was nothing that could be done, he was too sick and the remedies he taught me weren't enough."

He got it now. Cadaver felt it was his fault that whatever his father had caught from him was incurable, therefore he in inadvertently killed the man. Must be hard taking all that in. Being brought into the world to protect only to cause more damage than good. It was risky taking him in as he thought about it but Weiss hadn't been lying, he'd sleep better knowing he could help. And so he would. "You will stay here." He spoke softly, rising to his feet. "I have a spare room. It's yours. Now stop blaming yourself and start living. I'm sure he wouldn't want you wallowing around in your own self pity." It was a harsh truth but he couldn't deny feeling the other man wouldn't want him like this. "We'll take it a day at a time but you'll get better and when you're ready we will give your father a proper funeral."

Cadaver watched Weiss closely, his eyes red rimmed from so much crying. He wanted to believe his father wouldn't blame him, he needed that but it was too much to taken in right now. The man was so distant despite the fun times they'd had. "Let go, son. Just let it go." Weiss came near hugging him time as Cadaver did as asked, crying into the strange man's arms. "That's the way. It'll get better."

► Time Goes On ◄

As fate would have it, time goes on. With much pushing and consistent nagging, Cadaver had finally gotten over the hump of his funk. Though he still didn't forgive himself over his father's death he understood that everyone was destined for their end. With a heavy heart but hopeful future, he let Edelweiss beat (quiet literally) some since into him. A few slaps to the back of the head on a regular basis had turned Cada rather ornery.

Though with time, Cadaver had learned to respect the older man. Even if he wasn't used to how blunt and harsh the man was, he did care for him. Edelweiss had a good heart and he meant well. Maybe not as outgoing and sultry as his papa but definitely solid like the rock he needed.

SMACK!

"Hey!"

"Quit your day dreaming boy. Don't you have to be at the hospice?"

That's right, he was starting his first real job today. Working with the town's hospice center to help patients with an incurable sickness and many more on their death beds. Gathering all his equipment he hurriedly stuffed them in his bag (the one his father had used). Giving Edelweiss a slap on the back he hurried down stairs and out the back door.

Looking to the floor, it was then Weiss noticed the foot prints. "Cadaver! That boy is always tracking dirt in here..." Sighing to himself he hurried to the kitchen for a buck and sponge. "Best start cleaning then."

► Grand Opening ◄

"You really should relax." Cadaver smirked lightly to himself as he slipped pass his guardian who was fiddling around with a trinket or another.

Edelweiss Jäger owner of Edelweiß Antiques had spent the better part of the night well into the morning cleaning the shop and polishing all the wares. His meticulous need to put everything in its proper place and order had garnered an unhealthy set of dark spots under his eyes. Cada had spared no expenses in pointing this fact out.

"I am well aware of what is needed. Relaxing is not one of them, mein Junge. Hurry put the sign in the window." Edelweiss scuttled about the shop checking last minute necessities. Cadaver just shook his head hurrying to put the open sign in the window.

As he did these he notices a young girl standing out front with a trinket in hand. Unlocking the door he opened it to kneel before her. "Is there something you need?"

Looking a bit nervous the girl nodded then spoke, "My father's pocket watch, it's broken. Can you fix it?" She asked hopefully.

Cada looked to the shop then back at the girl standing to offer a hand. "Sure lets see what my friend can do." He knew Edelweiss loved to tinker with watches. Although they weren't a tinker shop he did offer minor repair services (if within his ability). "Edelweiss this girl has a pocket watch she needs fixed. You think you could help?"

Inspecting the girl then Cadaver, Edelweiss snorted dismissively turning the corner to kneel before the child. "Do you have money for this transaction, child?"

The young girl looked between the two of them before reaching in her pocket to pull out a small change purse. Moving to the counter she stood on her tip-toes to deposit her purse. Out came a few coins nothing along what was required for the transaction but quite a tidy sum. "Is this enough?" She asked meekly blushing for not knowing the amount needed.

"Lets take a look." Standing Edelweiss counted her change. "You have 3.00 in change. This won't be enough for a repair. I can take a look at the watch and let you know what needs to be done. Is this okay?" Nodding the girl gather her coins. "Good. Let me get my equipment. Please find her a stool and have her ready over at the repair counter."

"Alright! Lets get you set up. I'm Cadaver, what's your name?"

"Midnight."

"Oh that's interesting. Why that name?"

"My mama gave birth to be exactly at midnight and because I have such dark hair and eyes." She blushed lightly at being picked up and placed on the stool in front of the repair station.

"Well that's a lovely name. My friend will be right with you, maybe if you're good and listen carefully he might show you how to fix it yourself. Would you like that?"

"Oh yes! Could he?"

Cada chuckled softly ruffling Midnight's hair. "Yep. Just be very attentive and if you ask questions he show you exactly what you need. I'm sure you can go to a tool shop and get what you need to fix the watch with your change too." He offered as an after thought.

"Really?"

He nodded moving away from the counter at the sound of the bell tinkling over the door. At this time Edelweiss returned with his tools and began instructing the girl on how to fix her watch. Cada laughed, he knew Weiss would simply show her instead. He seemed to like helping children learn how to fend for themselves. He couldn't help remember how the man had insisted he get out of his own funk and find what made him smile again. After his papa's death, Cada hadn't felt quite the same but he had understood that everything happens for a reason. Perhaps it was time he moved on.... perhaps....
