It's not permanent, just long enough to stop the invasions for the most part. Same wit repeated trolling I thought. IP ban em so they can't come back five minutes later, then unban the IP a few weeks later. (In case it's a recycling IP)

And how's that affective whatsoever? If it is a recycling IP, innocent users are still affected for a week and the troll cans till get around it by simply re-connecting. That doesn't cover people spoofing their IPs either or who are on shared work/shool/home networks.
The only IP banning I know of that's in affect is the 15 minute one when someone has too many wrong logins. That's not to prevent trolling though, but just one of many means to prevent people from using cracking programs and being able to crack accounts easier.

It would be an exaggeration to say my eyes are bleeding for an item update.

Yes, IP bans have been used in the past.
It doesn't take that much work to see if an IP ban will work well on some one. For instance if you were able to look at my IP info you would see my accounts and my sisters' and that they have a stable IP. Whereas other people who don't have a stable IP or who log in from different computers often, you can see that right away and know that it's not going to do any good. So how is that not affective for a temporary ban such as in a forum invasion?
However as a permanent solution it sucks. xd I don't want to be banned if one of my sisters is banned, right? 99.9% of bans are account based. Even though people can create new accounts, if it's a permaban they tend to really hate losing all the stuff they had in that account.
On a related note some one in my house got us temp-banned from a different forum, and the guy was stupid enough to use an IP ban. But we already knew before that he was pretty unsavvy about computer things and....life.

Although I was a mod here that's not really from the "Inside! OMG!" of Gaia. I never personally banned any one, for instance. Wasn't that type of mod.
But one day I asked my Dad, who works in computers, what an IP ban was. Got a lot of info right then, added to it since, and it's my opinion that it would be useable in situations like Valgav described. Also I'm an admin on a phpBB forum (like this one) so I just...learned...things. ninja xd
