Harvested Sorrow Yeah, doesn't mean they were right, certainly not about Zeppelin. Blues rock doesn't = metal. thats not completely true. they had some metal kind of stuff. they also influenced some metal bands.

childishwishes Has anyone else heard Stairway to Heaven, played backwards? I'm sure everyone here knows this..but as I am prone to rambling I'll explain it anyway. Stairway to Heaven is about the devil leading people to the forest and taking them down to Hell. There's an old myth, I'm not quite sure of what origin, but it's about the devil playing a song and calling out to souls. The people then follow him to the forest and down to hell, while his assistant, waits in Heaven, with the doors closed. If you listen, the words can be interpreted to mean just that. The piper is the devil: "And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune Then the piper will lead us to reason And a new day will dawn for those who stand long" And the lady who is buying the stairway, is buying it, as in blocking it off and closing Heaven's gates. "Your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know The piper's calling you to join him" Again the devil calling to the souls. When you play it backwards, specifically at the "if there's a bustle in your hedgerow" part, then you'll hear santanic messages. They say vaguely "here's to my sweet satan, the one who I love who is satan, that made us suffer poor satan, satan 666" You can search for a clip of that on Google and hear it. It's quite creepy. Anyway, I hope that wasn't too boring for anyone, and was informative to others that didn't know. not to be mean or anything, led zeppelin wernt into satan!!!also, in an interview, robert plant states that their not quite sure of what stairway to heave is about, because they were stoned when they wrote it. and when stairway to heaven came out, im sure that they didnt have the equipment to play the song in reverse and make it sound like their saying "here's to my sweet satan, the one who I love who is satan, that made us suffer poor satan, satan 666" the same type of thing happened with judas priest, some people thought that their kids killed themselves because the kids thought that the song said "do it", its just a play on sounds. so i suggest that you reavaluate your sourses. p.s. im really not trying to be mean or hateful!

It relates that to Crowley's house and makes several references to it...it also mentions that it is believed that the song is meant to have a double meaning (One path to heaven, one to hell). Also, in a live version of the song that was played backwards there were messages spoken that were about wishing to be saved by Jesus, the exact opposite of the studio recording. Due to this, it's highly unlikely that the song was actually Satanic. i agree! which live recording, is it the one from song remains the same?

Robert Plant says "If [backward masking] worked, every record would have the backward message 'BUY THIS RECORD' in it!", so he knows that the whole stairway to heaven satanic ordeal is a whole bunch of nonsence.

tolkien Robert Plant says "If [backward masking] worked, every record would have the backward message 'BUY THIS RECORD' in it!", so he knows that the whole stairway to heaven satanic ordeal is a whole bunch of nonsence. "Backwards-speech" is believed to be un-intentional....something sub-conscious, so they don't have to consciously be thinking about putting it in there for it to happen. That aside after the things Led Zeppelin have done to achieve fame I wouldn't count on any of them being honest.

They influenced some metal bands, however, they themselves were not metal. They played blues rock, and metal was a movement AWAY from blues rock, despite having a bluesy base due to Black Sabbath's early material.

I don't recall, I don't believe the site named the recording, or at least I don't remember. And for the record, Led Zeppelin or Jimmy Page at least had a HEAVY interest in the occult in the '70s. He actually went so far as to buy Aleister Crowley's former mansion.

For those interested....
www.inthelight.co.nz/ledzep/zososymbol.htm
It details the origin of Zoso.
and www.reversespeech.com/music_reversals.htm details Stairway To Heaven's backwards speech, at the bottom of the page, with this:
Stairway to Heaven
If there was a top 40 of backmasked songs, then "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin would be at the top. This song contains many backward messages. Here is one of them that occurs right at the very end of the song.. It says: "Play backwards. Hear words sung."
However, by far the most controversial backward messages on the song can be found in the following soundtrack. They say backwards: "Its my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad whose power is fake (indeterminate gibberish - some people claim this says, He gives you 666) There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan."
A complete analysis of the reversals in this song and their meanings can be found in this extract: Stairway to Where? from the book, "Reverse Speech: Voices From The Unconscious." This book contains an extensive and historical analysis of many other reversals and backward messages in music. To purchase a copy of this book go to the Products Section of this website.
It also provides a link to the article I mentioned that goes pretty far in-depth about the possible meanings behind the words in Stairway To Heaven...for you lazy ********, that link is:

Jimmy Page actually found it amusing that people think and thought that he worshiped satan.

But i did read that site and I have gathered that Led Zeppelin weren't of the a satanic group, but as they said it may have been a song of hope to the people who (as legends say) suffered on the Aleister Crowley grounds. Robert Plant states "I think that this is a song of hope" in the movie the song remains the same, right before doing stairway to heaven.
