Qiao laughed, lifting Shen up when she hugged him back. He was pretty light, so it was no big feat.
"Yeah, we should. I do hope they open soon. But let's go get our stuff first. Even if they open, it'll still be pretty early and I don't think it'll be gone before we get back."
She craned her neck around, glancing at other shops and still not letting Shen down.
"Hey, that place sells candles! Oooo and incense! And it's opening right now! Let's go there first!"
She ran over to the shop, Shen still in her arms. Letting him go had completely slipped her mind.

Shen-Ru was surprised when he was scooped up so easily by Qiao, a startled sound escaping him. But, he was small, and it was the point in life where girls were still a bit bigger than boys, and she seemed to have no effort in picking him up. So he laughed and patted her back lightly, feeling a bit jostled as she ran to the candle and incense store.
When they arrived, he patted her back again, smiling down at her in a most charming manner. "Perhaps you should let me down now, Qiao dear?"

Qiao nodded, trying to look serious. She spoke in her deepest 'man voice' as she started lowering him to the ground.
"Why of course, darling! Just let me know whe your feet get tired." She set Shen down, brushing him off a little before walking over to the candle section.
"Now," she began, voice back to normal "what kind do you want? I'm gonna get some incense too. You want any?"

Shen-Ru stared at Qiao for a moment, then laughed, settling on his feet and lightly tickling the girl. "You're quite silly, you know, Qiao?" he murmured, before stepping into the shop and looking up at the candles, admiring the wide variety. "I should probably get a few, since I'm going to be using them every night... And would you mind something with a bit of scent? Lavender, perhaps... it helps you sleep. The same for the incense. Lavender and sandalwood, and perhaps a few others..."

"Yes!" Qiao nodded. "Yes I am." She wandered over to the scented section, digging through the bins with her hands. It was pretty easy to find lavender, everything was colored according to it's scent and lavender was...lavender.
"Got it. I love lavender by the way. But for me, it's a little strong so I'm getting lilac. OH! Here's your sandlewood!" She pointed to a handfull of light brown sticks that she was now waving in the air.
Qiao collected the incense and walked over to the candle section, looking around with Shen. She leaned her head on his shoulder while he was looking through a bin, fiddling with his braid every now and then.
"Yeah, you should probably get a lot. Do you think you'd need em all night long, though? Like, after you fall asleep would you notice if they went out? Maybe I can wait till you're asleep and put them out for you."

Shen-Ru looked delighted as Qiao found the scents and candles he wanted, smiling brightly at her. "Thank you, very much!" he said happily as he trotted over, holding a few more plain candles in his hands, nodding slightly. "These will be good... and I think that it would be good if you put out the candles after I fall asleep. As long as you don't mind staying up a little longer than I do."

"All depends on how comfy my pillow is!" Qiao smiled, patting Shen on the back with a free hand. The other had the incense.
"And I don't mind. I'l just find something to keep myself busy while I wait. The important part is that you get to sleep."

"As long as you're sure. I don't want to force you into staying awake or anything... that would most certainly be cruel," replied Shen-Ru, laughing a little and reaching out to pat Qiao's back as well, before humming a little. "Now... what do we need to get next, after we pay for these?"

"Not at all, buddy. I always stay up late anyway. I'll find something to do. Like make your new wardrobe! So cute."
Qiao walked over to the lady behind the desk and started taking things out of her bag.
"Why my pillow, of course, my little turtle-duck! And after that, we can do whatever you want. How's that sound?"

"Oh, yes! The pillow," replied Shen-Ru, smiling happily and following after Qiao, watching her take things out of the bag. "Anything I want...? Goodness, I don't know, though... I've never really been to a market before, so I don't know what there is to do. Perhaps... instead, you could show me what there is to see?"

"Never?" Qiao looked over at her friend in surprise. If she had been drinking something, this would be the moment where she'd do a spit-take. Seriously, who's NEVER been to a market place? He was RICH. Rich people can afford all the fancy stuff Qiao couldn't.
"Ohhhhh, man. You poor thing. Well, if that's the case, we'll start with the basics."
She grabbed both his shoulders, looking right into his eyes, inching creepily towards his face.
"SHOES."

Shen-Ru blinked a few times, shaking his head slowly, before yelping as he was suddenly seized, eyes wide as he stared at Qiao with a hint of fear. "Shoes...?" he murmured finally, looking down at his feet and wiggling his toes in the slightly worn flat shoes he was wearing. He did like shoes... "I wouldn't mind going shopping for shoes..."

Qiao nodded affirmitively. She could tell he was excited. Who didn't love shopping for shoes? Losers, that's who. And people with no feet. Ew.
"That's right, baby. That's exactly what we're gonna do."
The tight-lipped lady behind the counter cleared her throat for attention. She didn't need these brats holding up the line that wasn't there.
"That'll be 43 coppers." She spat at Qiao who was probably about to lift Shen again for the heck of it.
Qiao rolled her eyes and dug through her pockets. She hated being rushed, especially by mean old ladies. She slammed the coins on the desk and scooped up everything in her arms. It'd take forever to bag everything and that would mean staying around the lady longer.
"Come, Shen-Shen." Qiao commanded, walking back to the main streets. "Let's go get my pillow."

Shen-Ru looked up as the woman snarled at him and he narrowed his eyes a little, wishing he could use his family name in this situation, but knowing it could risk him just being found again and brought home. He sighed as their things were gathered, picking up the few things that Qiao couldn't carry and stepping out onto the street again. "Your pillow, yes," he said, as he drew a bag out of his jacket and offered it up to Qiao, to put their things in.

"Well I sure as s**t ain't shopping there again. Let's hope you don't run out of candles anytime soon."
Nodding in thanks, she dropped her things into Shen's bag and continued walking around. That lady really burned her biscuits and it showed. Qiao looked extra grumpy. She didn't know why, but people like that really ruined her good moods.
"BLEHHHHH." She groaned.
