America falls silent five years after 9/11 attacks

Americans remember one of the most traumatic experiences in their history today, five years after al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked two airlines and flew into the twin Towers of the World Trade Centre. Thousands visit the ground zero in Manhattan and keep silence at 8.46am (2.46pm UK time). One of four moments of silence in remembrance at the moment when two jets hit the towers and one by one fell down. Other ceremonies were planned at the Pentagon where a third plane flew into it. Another at Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where a fourth captured plan crashed into the ground after some passenger’s revolt. Altogether, 2,973 people were killed on 9/11, including 246 on the four jets, 2,602 in the twin towers or on the ground below, and 125 at the Pentagon.
Officers held up the stars and stripes and a choir sang the US national anthem. After that the Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, led the first moment of silence today. Family members held up signs reading, "You will always be with us" and "Never forget". While the moments of silence were observed quiet sobs could be heard. The New York fire chief, Bob Senn, said: "The one thing I see in my mind when I think of them is that empty chair at the dinner table, fathers who won’t see their children grow up and parents who won’t see the fruits of their efforts." He lost his whole crew after the attempt. After the silence there sounds a solo cello and the relatives read the names of loved ones killed at the day five years ago. The also laid floral tributes in two reflecting pools, which where build at the place where the towers stands.
