High-functioning Cranberry

Nathaniel was stiff the whole time. People talking to him was unsettling, though he could never place why. Perhaps because he was expected to talk back. That was something he disliked. He turned to the familiar, soothing voice behind him when it addressed him. Still cradling the kitten close, his gaze snapped to the boy, Bobby, sitting on the bench. Nathaniel's feet shuffled nervously, and his heart raced suddenly when he was asked to sit next to him. To become friends with him. He looked to Grace, then back to Bobby. After a long moment of pause, he stepped forward and slunk next to Bobby. He gently sat himself down, eyes now downcast and body curled inward. One of his fingers still stroked Perrine's ears gently. Nathaniel could feel his mouth watering from the smell in the room, his stomach turning a bit from the hunger. He would leave if he could, but his hunger nailed him to the bench.

Bobby stared a moment at Grace after she told Nathaniel to sit next to him. He wasn't quite sure that was a good idea... for different reasons Nathaniel had. Bobby was still embarassed after feeling caught from 'staring'.... maybe he hadn't even been staring, but those were the thoughts that plagued his mind. After Nathaniel sat down, Bobby couldn't help but avert his eyes in the kitten's direction again. He had been worried about the little one, especially after she ran off into the rain.
"...it's um... good to see the kitten's okay."
This was the acrobat's attempt to start some kind of friendly conversation...in Bobby's mind it was a weak one, and he almost immediately regretted saying it as he internally face/palmed.

Bobby's voice so close made Nathaniel shiver even more. He looked down to the kitten, the thing that was now linking Bobby and he together, and nodded slowly. "Y... yeah." He looked away, his stomach now twisting with nervousness rather than hunger. A moment passed before he turned to Bobby again. "Would... you like to hold her?" His voice scratched through his mask, muffled and weak. But that didn't matter much. He held out the kitten towards Bobby, letting it's feet dangle helplessly from his grasp. It really was a cute little thing, and Nathaniel was quite glad he had saved her. She was a consolation of his now. It was so easy to trust in a little kitten; something that had no power to hurt.

Bobby looked between Nathaniel's mask and the kitten after the offer.
"Oh... I don't know... she ran away before..."
By this point he wasn't sure what to make of the situation. It appeared that Nathaniel was no less nervous than Bobby..... in fact, the more the boy examined the scene the more he found this to be the case. He looked back to the kitten and smiled a bit, curious to see if she would accept him at all.

Senna looked back to Huck after Nathaniel went to sit with Bobby.
"My face isn't red... Maybe you're mistaken."
She brushed her hair out of her face and checked the soup. Thank goodness it was almost done. Senna thought that the kids were probably starving by now, with the awesome stew that was being made and the fact that they seemed to have not eaten in awhile. Even Senna was quite a bit hungry herself.

Huck smiled. "Riiight. You was earlier." he said with a smirk.
That stew was smelling really good to him. At last he was gonna have some real food for a change instead of that commodity meat crap he had to eat that past couple days.

"It was probably my hair Huck..."
She looked away still in slight blush. Senna felt like she was handling a little crush too immaturely. Maybe if she had an adult to teach her the birds and the bees, "Whatever that was" She would know how to react to this. She walked over to dish storage areas and pulled out some bowls and a ladle to serve the soup. The bowls were set at the ground for others to pick up, but she personally got Seth, Bobby and Nathaniel their soup. Carrying in a waitress like fashion, over 3 bowls with spoons filled with soup for the boys.
"I would have napkins too, but seems that you boys are out of those."
She said with a smile.
"Grace, you could go get some soup if you'd like, and..."
She looked back at Huck.
"You too."
Senna walked over and grabbed herself a bowl of soup and walked back to the table.

"Suit yerself cutie." he said with a wink. He was kinda getting confidence from this situation, but amour had to wait, that soup smelled GREAT!!!
"That'd be great! Grace, Senna, y'all first." he said. His Southern upbringing wasn't about to leave just 'cause he wasn't there anymore!

Perrine hung helplessly from the boys hands.... he was going to hand her off? She became only slightly worried, although she had seen that boy before she grew really close to Nathaniel. For some reason, she felt as though something bad might happen if the boy had taken her. She mewed once, but did nothing more than that. Hopefully, if Nathaniel stayed by her, and kept watch over her nothing would happen. Nothing bad would ever happen to her again, so long as she tried to stick to her human instincts. It would take a lot of work but keeping with her own, rather than that of this body, the kitten side of her, she might find a way out. A fear that, if she became completely feline, she would never return back. Never speak, walk, do art, steal from old people who yell at her, skateboard, or graffiti. All of it would be gone. Nothing but licking herself which she found revolting, and sleeping.

Nathaniel's eyes were trained on the cat. She mewed helplessly. He realized what he was really doing and as soon as soup was set in front of him and Bobby, he brought the kitten back close to him again. He didn't really want to let her go. Shyly, he kept his gaze down and away from everyone else, situating Perrine on his lap and letting her lay there. as soon as she was situated, he rose his head to table, to his food. He swallowed, the smell of the soup intoxicating. His stomach had been empty for just over a day now, and he was itching to devour this soup. But his problem still remained; mask. He looked up at everyone once, just once, before returning his gaze to the soup. He sat, silently and motionlessly, for a good minute or two. He then shuffled in his seat, cradling Perrine with one arm, and stood. He looked to the table, then to the girl who made the soup. He bowed slightly, hoarsley whispering a, "Thank you," before walking out of the tent, bowl of soup in hand.

Huck smiled as he watched everything go on. Oddly enough, despite looking rather hungry, he didn't go for the soup. He just was waiting for the others. Not that he minded any. Of course, he adjusted his shirt so that the scar was hidden a little better. He didn't mind answering about what happened, but the less that was brought up about it the better.

Senna went and got some soup of her own, passing Nathaniel as he left the room and sat next to Bobby on the bench. She wanted to say something in return but didn't want to have to use an outdoor voice to reach Nathaniel as he headed out. As she sat she looked at her food and looked over to Bobby and Seth.
"Both of you eat okay."
Grace stood up just as Senna sat down. And walked over picking a bowl up from where the food was at and served herself taking her bowl with her towards the door.
"I'm going to watch over Nathaniel. You two take care of Bobby and Seth. Make sure /no/ trouble comes from them or well, any of you for that matter."
Senna glanced back to Grace. "Trouble? What trouble could we possibly get into here?" She thought looking at the rather boring and empty food tent.
"What did /we/ do?"
She mumbled under her breath almost hoping that Grace wouldn't hear.

Huck whistled a little bit before finally getting some soup for himself. Sitting down over by Senna he smiled as he took a bite. "Best thing I had since I left home." he said with a smirk, referring to the stew. He was pretty hungry!

"Wait until I make Liver and Onions..."
She said, with a slight sarcasm. It was impossible to tell almost if she were saying that it would be better or worse than this meal, if anyone were to judge the tone of her voice. Of course she meant it would be better but she couldn't help but say it in such a tone.Senna waited to start eating for the boys. Making sure that they would attempt to start if they'd seen that she was waiting for them.
"I wonder... if we couldn't find a way to leave, just to get some good fast food. Maybe some Burgers and Fries... Americans like that sort of thing right?"

Seth looked down at the bowl and began eating the things he did like and pushing the undesirables aside. He tried to hide it by pushing the bowl close to his chest and hovering his head over it. Senna would probably notice anyway and tell him to eat his food. He glanced at Bobby wondering if he could push what was left from his bowl in the other boy's, and after get another serving. He knew it was stupid idea but then again the child in him was calling out to do it.
