Masquerade! Paper faces on parade. Masquerade.
_______________________________Hide your face so the world will never find you...

Nathaniel

Nathaniel cautiously trailed Grace, keeping back with his cat. He saw what he didn't want; friendly people. Why couldn't they have been mean? Nathaniel pouted secretly, seemingly shy in the corner of the "Food tent". He listened to their strange conversation about the use of the term "sugar" and began glancing around at everyone else in the tent. There was the American, the loud girl, and a young boy. Luckily, the owner, Siff, was nowhere to be seen. For now, Nathaniel could worry about another matter. The food smelled delicious, his mouth watering already, but he soon realized a problem. Mask. Food. Nathaniel slumped slightly, gritting his teeth. Well, this is a problem, isnt it?

Once the fumes of the onion subsided, Bobby had drawn enough attention away from the scent, and more to the newest arrivals to the tent: Grace, and a new face.....well, mask. After a moment he forced his gaze away to look at the pot. An hour? He didn't know if he could wait a whole hour for food, especially with all the delicious scents lingering in the air. The acrobat sat down and stole a glance towards the newcomer once more... and realized that he was holding something. It was bundled up in his clothing so Bobby hadn't realized at first what it was, but-

"It's... that cat--"

It was more a mumble than anything that had slipped in surprise from the boy. It was good to know the cat was okay...

Huck found some logs and a maul close by to the food tent. He had to admit that this was stuff he did on his family's farm back home, but it seemed like a long time since he left home. He smirked as he picked up the maul after placing a log down on the side.

WHAM!!

The log split effortlessly in half, he repeated the process until he had enough to carry back to the food tent. Smiling as he brought the split wood back.

"Y' think this is 'nuff fer th' fire, Senna?" he asked.

"More, than enough Huck."

She said looking back to observe the large amount of wood Huck had. Sure it was a big pot of stew but one log more would be good. After all, wouldn't want to burn the tent, let alone burn the food. Senna continued to watch the food sitting nearby the cooking area of the tent. She was still a bit twitterpated from Huck's previous comments. A conflict of that and the feeling of overwhelming grief the place was giving her and many of the people around her.

Grace stepped inside the tent and sat nearby Nathaniel at one of the many picnic like tables that sit on the opposite side of the cooking and storage area in the tent. The canvas just above the cooking area had a hole in it to allow smokes and scents to leave through the top and permeate the air around the tent. Back then, it was a good day when someone made a big great meal for all the workers. Every one of the workers would gather to the tent knowing that there was food but today. It had rained, and the air, still smelled of wet clay, musty wood, rust, and old tarps. If one sat long enough and examined every part of what made the carnival what it was. The tent was very big, meant to feed the mass of workers that once enjoyed and worked here. Grace brushed at her sleeves a little rubbing away some of the dust and hay from her previous work and looked to Senna and Huck crossing her arms on the table calmly.

"Senna. How are you healing? And Bobby."

While she's in the place to ask, she might as well. When she mentioned Bobby's name she glanced to him.

Huck smiled as he put the split wood down. The young Kentucky boy picked up some split pieces and placed them on the fire. "Reckon it's a might easier t' cook on a better fire . . . know what I mean?" he asked. It seemed he was a little more at ease here than he was in the tent with everyone.

It seemed like he was almost . . . happy. Sure he under Siffy's employment, but already falling for someone? Easy, Huck . . . remember, you two just MET! No need to go pick out weddin' rings. he thought.

Nathaniel's head snapped towards the young boy immediately. He held the cat a bit closer to him as his head stayed poised towards the boy. One wondered what his eyes were doing. Staring in confusion? Interest? Or perhaps squinting with distrust? Scorn? It was impossible to tell what the long silence meant. His head followed the boy into his sitting position and shoulders lowered slightly. He then looked away. He wouldn't keep the gaze for too long. In this light, there was a chance his eyes might shimmer through his mask. He stepped away from the room, keeping only the cat close to him. He even distanced himself from Grace; he had forgotten she was a person.

Bobby didn't know what to make of the masked one's reaction. He turned away, feeling silly that he had been looking that direction at all... even as Grace asked of him and Senna her question, the boy just muffled a short "fine" as he kept his attention seemingly elsewhere. Bobby suddenly had this overpowering idea that he had done or said something wrong in the last couple minutes, and he couldn't begin to shake it off.

"um..."

Senna turned to see the masked boy distance himself from Grace. She then looked to Grace attentively.

"Yea, I'm doing okay. I'm healed enough to get around."

She sighed and glanced back to the soup with a chefs watchful eye as she go up to it started to stir again.

"By get around do you mean hide your pain."

Grace said standing up and walking over to sit next to Bobby. She wanted to inspect both of them while she was there. It would save her from having to find these two again.

"Anyway, Bobby... I didn't quite catch /your/ answer yet."

"I'm not hiding anything..."

Senna quickly shot a glance to Huck with a blush. Definitely not hiding anything, couldn't be a crush, or her past... nope nothing. "Damn this guy, who does he think he is? Some hod stud? Going and getting wood, and calling me sugar." As quick as she became twitterpated at the sight of him she became the "Hard to get" kind of girl. Coughing and looking away. As is any lady should, she should make herself a hard catch to begin with.

Nathaniel

Though he met the gaze of everyone who looked at him, he didn't show it. His head was still pointed slightly down and away. His hands were still occupied with the kitten in his arms. His mind was still buzzing with worry. What am I going to do? I can't just starve. But I can't risk anyone seeing beneath my mask if I pull it up a bit to eat. His stomach just then made a loud rumble and his head snapped down to it. He stared at it, as if shushing it, though behind the mask his cheeks were hot. He had hoped to be quiet in the corner, but this was even worse than speaking. Sighing, he got down, curling up a bit and stroking Perrine. After a while, he set her towel on the floor, letting her poke her head out and roam around a bit. He still stroked her back, though, his eyes trained on her in awe.

Kira, now called Perrine, got out of the blanket and rubbed her fur against Nathaniel. She couldn't quite explain it but it felt good to have her fur petted in such a way. When she could smell food she turned to look towards the pot. There was feathers too. Lots of them. Why did they look so fun to just. Tear up! She crawled away from Nathaniel a bit and then stalked over very slowly to the woman who was stirring the food.

Huck smirked. He was a little bewildered at Senna, who was giggling and blushing like a schoolgirl three seconds ago, seemed to turn off like water in a faucet. Mama warned be 'bout that. Reckon this is some kinda test. he thought. After dinner he'd have to get the courage up to talk to her. However, he jumped the gun.

"Then why's yer face so red?" he asked.

Seth sat down watching everyone around him. He wished everyday could be like this but sadly it could never be. He glanced at the new kid a few times then the cat he was holding. It was the one from earlier he assumed. The furry creature jumped out of Nathaniel's arms and make her way towards Senna. She was crouching down ready to pounce. He didn't want the cat to hurt the angel so he whistled over to it to get its attention.

Bobby glanced Grace's way when she addressed him a second time, and he repeated his answer a bit louder.

"Fine. I'm doing fine."

The boy moved his arm across the front of his ribcage and looked away again. It was lucky for them, that Grace was such a good healer. His injury didn't cause Bobby much trouble in today's performance, and he hoped Senna really was doing all right as well. The actions of the kitten drew Bobby's attention, and he watched her intently...
PostPosted: Sat Apr 28, 2012 4:41 pm

Nathaniel perked at the kitten's actions, sitting up a bit and watching her bound out of his grasp. He figured she'd be fine over there; just as long as he could see her, everything would be fine. It wasn't until someone new in the tent, a strange boy he had seen earlier, whistled sharply that Nathaniel realized what his new responsibility was about to do. Quickly and quietly, Nathaniel got to his feet and trotted to the kitten. Just as she was about to maul those feathers, he slid his arm under her and swooped her up into his arms. Mask in her face, he shook his head as a slight scold and looked up to the girl with the wings. "S-sorry," he rasped, despite the kitten having done nothing to her wings.

Senna turned and looked at the masked boy who held the rambuctious little kitten. She blinked a stared a bit, wondering what was going on, completely clueless to the fact that the kitten was even coming near her.

"Oh, um... okay, apology accepted."

"Even though I don't know what you did" She continued in thought.

Perrine reached out with a paw at Senna playfully. She wanted those feathers so bad, but found herself stopped short. It was probably for the best, she didn't want to end up doing things out of instinct anyway. Despite having been a kitten she still felt rather human, undignified, but still human. What she would give to be able to stand on her two feet again at their height and enjoy in conversation with one of the kids her age.

Grace watched and then looked motioned to Nathaniel.

"Could you come here Nathaniel... you can sit next to Bobby."

She smiled. When she looked at Bobby she give him a reassurence that Nathaniel was okay.

"Nathaniel saved this kitten. She was stuck in the rain... He's a good kid and I think you two would be good friends."
