I read somewhere that JK said that the amount of first years in each house fluctuated, because not everyone's going to be a Gryffindor, so perhaps this is a good year for Slytherin.
Of course, it could mean a good year for all the rest of the houses because there's quite a few troublemakers.
But I'm still not understanding why there is even a limit in the first place.
Maybe I'm just semi-retarded?

I originally put a limit on it because I didn't want anyone to get out of hand. Because there are certain ages and houses that get more attention than others. (-cough- gryffindors -cough-)
And I just like to keep everything balanced. Sometimes it gets to the point of crazy controlling.
And of course the number of first years would fluctuate.
I mean, they're not going to choose only forty kids to go to Hogwarts each year.
And the whole Johanna thing... she is quite the complication.

Gryffindors, by stereotype, are Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu-esque.
Which I think is why a lot of people are straying away.
I also think it's a matter that 1 - 3 years are pretty much um...irritating.
(Not character-wise in the RP, but like by the books)
The first years are like...High School Freshmen.
They think they're totally sweet, but uh...they're not.
Second years are like Sophomores...
No one likes them either. They still think they're sweet.
Third Years are like Juniors
and no one exactly likes those either.
Then 4, 5, 6, & 7 is like one huge senior class.
and everyone just *has* to be a senior.
...but don't worry.
I'm going to be making a few Gryffindor characters to even out the load. :]
Also, you're speaking about out of control?
Have you seen your character thread, woman?

Haha, 1st-3rd years are pretty much annoying.
And I think everyone has a bit of a preference to 6th years because they demand a bit of respect, while still having a year left of school, and they don't have OWLs or NEWTs.
Gryffindors can get crazy too.
Like our batch of 5th years...
Yeah, those crazy Gryffindors.
and then they say things like "Of course we're trouble, we're Gryffindors, we invented trouble!"
... pfft. Yeah, I have a lot of characters, I know.
But I'm telling you, I'm taking a break from NPCs for now.
I've been working on Rick, Angie, and Adelia.
They'll keep me occupied for a while.

Oh yay!
Skander needed some dance partners. Except, you know, not in the "dance partner" sort of way...
Plus, I just had to use Travis from NLT some way and then JJ was telling me to use him. And now V is telling me to use him too, but I'm too tired right now.
I'm currently writing up a post for Melanie and Skander, and had a bit of Hannah's help with it! :] Thanks Hannah.

Haha, Hannah, I can't wait to hear what Snape has to say about Skander.
I love the idea we just planned. I'm writing it down right now.
UGH! People have been in my house for the past hour. And I'm hungry!!!!! It makes me so mad and sad at the same time... crying
Edit: I'm all better now, they finally left and I just finished eating dinner! The people even brought peaches from the farmer's market! Yays to them! :]

Yea, it is so much more for plotting. Nat, Rach, Lonnie, Meg, Hannah, and I use it to plot all the time. And soon Isa and I will be doing some Skander/Jane/Will/Melanie plotting! (If she remembers to log on)
Haha, Hannah you're so funny. But yea, most of us cool BTS kids have one...why don't you? The supreme ruler?
