"Five, puppy-snips," the man said, holding the coin out to her. "As the fifty cents might've strained the overpowered oiled machine of your mind, there are five tens in fifty, and that's what I care for in daisies. Oh, well; it's the tragedy of life that not everybody is, in fact, me. And that's daisies, not daffodils. It's plain knowledge that you can catch things off a daffodil, innit? Like the withering."

Kitty lightly scowls at the man and pulls out 5 daisies, then takes his money "no sir, you can't catch things from daffodils. It's just a stupid rumor running around," she tried to sound as nice as possible "And have a great time watching someone die,"

"Oh, I do," the man said eagerly, and threaded the daisies all carelessly onto the brim of his hat. He took a lick of his candy, and gave Kitty a wide, very nearly ethereal smile, lips stained with some old peeling compound that made them an unlikely blue. "The thing is, I always do."

He gave her a cheerful wave, rocked back on his bare heels, and disappeared into the humming crowd.

Only to reappear five seconds later. "Oh, and the daffodils thing? For true. I died of it like ten times, I got better though." He disappeared again.

Kitty watched the man go with a puzzeled look on her face. She shook her head wierdo... she mumbled to herself
Well ha ha kitty, this is what you get for going to big events like this she said to herself, pocketing the coins the odd man just gave her. She perched herself up on the stack of barrels again to see the execution stage. when's it going to start? she said, looking past the horizon and the soon setting sun. She had clients waiting for her

Esmerelda felt the grin upon her face. She knew, she would do her best to not get in the way of anything .. eat only small amounts, and help as much as possible .. it was the least she could do for the kindness Hikari was showing her.

It was then, the words caught her attention.

"Execution?"

She supposed it was a public event .. but why would she bring a young child with her? Well .. maybe she was preparing the child for the future .. after all, everyone attended these events, why not start her out now.

Nodding, Esmerelda smiled, "Lead the way."

Hikari pursed her lips tightly, before slowly the corners of her mouth lifted into a tight smile. Her figure bent down to pick up the box she had placed on the ground and sifting the weight under her arm, attempted to move forward without looking ridicules with a heavy box of books in one arm and a child in the other.

“T-there...for p-people w-who helped us...” She explained, feeling as though she almost had to. “T-they..will p-probably b-be at the execution.”

She sighed heavily, a weight dropping in her chest. The shy girls doe brown eyes drifted to the floor feeling guilty. Rubido was right. There WERE things she should be grateful for. At least she was alive. But the topic was just so...grim. And there truly wasn’t anything they could do.

A tiny yawn escaped from the girl on Hikari’s hip, as the child’s small fists clutched all the tighter onto the material of her pink shirt. In turn Hikari let out a small yawn as if catching it. In between the yawn, she attempted to speak again “hee ar go-heing ta-“ She yawn ended and she shook her head “T-to the u-university. I-its n-not far from h-here.”

Annie had ducked down beneath the counter as soon as her bakery was empty of people, tucking rolls and various pastries into a large oval basket. She stood, wavering slightly, steadied herself, then hoisted the basket onto one hip. There we go. And then, on to the counter. She studied the basket for a moment, then added a few long loaves of bread, and a few small casks of fruit juice. When that was done, she ducked down beneath the counter again, reappearing on the public side. Annie grasped the basket, settled it on her left hip, and meandered out of the bakery, resisting the temptation to whack the door with her cane on the way out. "Lovely day for an execution." She murmured, walking as briskly as she could towards the University.

Sure, Marius Quinn was dying - whoever he was, it sucked to be him - but it didn't mean that she should have to suffer. She would go to the execution, mingle a bit, sell her goods, and keep the profits to herself. Easy enough. At least it wasn't raining, and her rolls wouldn't get wet, soggy, and lumpy. Annie blew a stray hair out of her face and continued walking. She didn't even know who Marius Quinn was. Most of the people who were executed had some sort of public following, or at least had a name. The kind of name that made people go silent when it was mentioned. Or the kind of name that caused the uneasy, sudden tittering of whispers, like undercurrents in the sea. Annie knew a lot about the sea, at one point. She couldn't remember much now, but she remembered undercurrents. "A public execution..." Yes. That was most definitely a sign of something. Annie didn't know what, but living in Wynander taught her one thing: something didn't start in plain view.

But that was for people who didn't have to scrounge to survive to think about, and Annie had rolls to sell.

Esmerelda watched as Hikari tried to carry both the child and the box of books at the same time, "Would you like me to carry something? It's the least I can do for all of your help." A sincere smile danced on the womans face.

It was then the street performer saw the sadness in Hikari's eyes. She could tell, that this life was really has bad as she thought. Having no idea what was yet to come, however .. Esmerelda tried to remain optimistic about the situation.

"Hey, try to cheer up. I know life may really suck sometimes .. but you've got a child, and you should show her a good example. She does look up to her mother after all." A toothy grin showed the Esmerelda was trying her best to cheer Hikari up.

Of course, Esmerelda was new here, so she didn't know her way around town. Best like Hikari show her the way.

A couple seconds of silence were enough to excuse Eli, so he placed a hand on the doorknob, gave a nod and a murmured 'thank you' before slipping out the door, infant in hand. He did hope he wasn't entirely on his own, though... The youth stopped in his tracks. First of all, where's Mutt? And second, where is he?

There were people bustling about, a lot more than when he'd entered the Velvet Room, and the smell of salt was stronger here. Spinning around, he noticed the door was different, and looking up, so was the sign. Utterly confused, Eli took a few steps into the crowd, flowing with it. Where was everyone going? As he rounded a corner, the sea came into view, and he knew he'd somehow misplaced himself. REALLY misplaced himself, for this is the Harbor!

As the infant silently played with Eli's forefinger, the youth lent an ear to the surrounding conversations. Something about an execution? Glacing to the setting sun, everything clicked. Should he take the young one to the execution? Surely not, she's just a babe! Then again, she wouldn't remember. And if he stood just right, she wouldn't see a thing.

So despite his hate for Sehket and anything to do with him, Eli followed the crowd toward the University. He didn't try to push his way forward as if this execution were to be the most exciting thing of his life, but he didn't walk away, either. There would be excitement here, that's for sure.

Where is that dog?

In the press of the hot and angry crowd, Elisheba hung close to Ishmerai, who kept her from being trampled or carried along by churning sea that were the masses of sticky animal-smelling humanity that had turned out to see the execution. The ground underfoot was already pounded hard and dry, the wispy dried grass that had once covered the quad threshed into nothing under the milling of numberless human feet.

The stage for the execution loomed him in front of them: old wood put together by human sweat and labor and stained a dirty maroon in places by human blood. They were some distance from it, being unable to approach too closely due to the already tightly packed crowd.

Besides, closer to the platform meant closer to the Peace Enforcement corps, and even in their hoods and cloaks they had a chance to draw unwanted attention. She knew that Ishmerai kept them back to keep them safer and to keep her from being shoved or manhandled; being small she could not really see much at all because mostly she was confronted with backs or necks. He had offered to give her a discreet boost to watch when it was time.

“What do you think of these people?” she asked him suddenly, curious and honest. He could remember the Times Before where it was only a vague and warm impression for her. She had grown up among this alien corn.

Ishemerai stared down one particularly curious passer-by before responding, "All of them are desparate, most of them have given themselves over to that desparation, the same way they gave themselves over to happiness before."

He was silent a moment before amending, "Not all of them are this way, of course. I would like to believe that many of them are hoping, or trying to hope, and are not just standing here out of boredom to watch a man die."

Severin stared blankly at Larry for a short moment before he realized what the other man was talking about. His memory was a bit lacking, though it was all steadily returning to him. "The.. execution. Yes, yes. We shouldn't wait too long, I could imagine that it'd draw all sorts of people to view it."

The Doctor managed to not flinch when Larry clapped him on the back, and was honestly surprised at his lack of a negative response. Perhaps he was getting used to the cheery Detective's presence? "I did, erm.. Zonk out for a little while there. I get distracted easily, you could say."

The newly named Nicodemus opened his eyes and glanced to Miriam, a bit of a smile cracking on his lips at hearing the name. He sat up fully, and stretched himself out while yawning in a babyish way. "Meerim." He said quite matter-of-factly after he had finished waking himself. His eyes gleamed happily.

"I understand. I'm a little on the distractable side myself. Right, then!" Larry released Severin, scooping up Miriam and rooting around on his desk for his keys.

"I can do some detectiving afterwards. No one really has a proper sense of time around here. Sunset isn't very specific. Although it's more specific than evening, and we still managed that, but I think it's best to err on the opposite side of late. Early? Erring on the side of early doesn't sound quite right, does it?"

Larry held up his keys triumphantly.

"We've spent enough time hanging around here! ...Oh, and please keep Fifi a secret. I'm not even technically...just don't say anything about her, okay? ...Did I say that earlier?"

Miriam was retrieved before she could respond, but made a happy sound and clutched Larry's shirt.

“Perhaps they aren't here to see him die at all. Perhaps they're here to see him live?” Elisheba suggested, then turned her face from him to look at the crowd around him. “What I mean is, I don't think living and dying are opposites, not like hot and cold or dry and wet. People mostly equate living – surviving -- with winning, and dying – in this case being executed -- with losing.” She shook her head. “I don't think anyone should wish to die. I believe that living is good, but that doesn't mean dying is evil. It isn't simple like that, is it?” She turned her face back to him and went on as though he'd answered her question. “I guess I think that you can understand very much about who a person is by watching them die. You can maybe even understand them more in just a few seconds than if you spent a whole lifetime of watching them live. I guess in death, those few moments are the rest of your lifetime.”

Date: Day 4 of Summer
Time: Late Afternoon/Early Evening
Weather: Cool, slightly cloudy, windy

As their small group hurried through another alleyway with Elliot in the lead, the gates of the University came into view. Although the bars were decorated with flowers crafted from iron, the top of the gate was lined with ornamental blades intended to deter trespassers.

"Looks like they won't be opening the front 'til sunset...only about an hour or two off now, I should think," Elliot murmurred, watching the entrance to the University. Iron chains still wound like a tangled snake around the entrance gates while a crowd of Wynander's people had already gathered outside.

"But there should be some back way in...I mean, they'll be letting in those Marsalle fellows before the common people," Adalei commented, obviously anxious now that they had arrived at the University.

Turning to Feyd and his Actor, she laid one hand gently on the infant's forehead. "When we get in there, stay close together. More than likely, Elliot will have to...have to confront Quinn. Being near another Actor will give him a little boost in power, even though your boy can not actively help. As long as your heart is set on helping Elliot, your Actor will obey and help as well."

Feyd followed closely, covering Syrin as best he could. At Adalei's words he nodded his dark head, shooting a glance to Elliot. "I'll do my best." After all, he had promised to help.

He was rather keen on finally seeing this Quinn after all he heard about the man. It was turning out to be a very interesting day.

The babe for his part had taken an interest in the fabric of Feyd's cloak and was gumming it soggy. Much more a sleepy child then a fighter of any sort.

The wind blew, pushing back Kitty's hood. She left it hanging from her shoulders and breathed in the air. From her perch, she could see everything. Amongst commoners, were more respectable looking people. I guess an execution was entertainment for any class. She saw some people carrying babies, or holding hands with toddlers. No... not humans... something much more... she heard briefly of them. Couldn't get to much information in the crowded and noisy tavern anyways. Out of every bit of information she heard around the place, how come she did not hear more about these strange youngins?
