Huck was sucking on a toothpick, doing his best to AVOID eating the commodity meat. Of course, hunger got the best of him and he tried eating some of it, offering it to Bobby and Senna. He listened to Senna thinking out loud and smirked. "I got an extra belt if'n ya want it, sugar." he said as he got back to sucking on that toothpick. Mostly jokingly, but he was a little worried about Seth. He probably scared the boy beyond belief when he was thinking of Escaping. Which . . . was still in his mind, only he knew that Bobby, Senna and Seth would go with him. I'm gonna need to work on my bike if I'm gonna get all four outta here! he thought.

When Seth walked in, he smiled a little. "It's okay, kiddo. Yer back now, right?" he asked.

Masquerade! Paper faces on parade. Masquerade.
_______________________________Hide your face so the world will never find you...

Nathaniel

It was curious, this place, and his throat itched to ask more, but self-preservation kept his questions at bay. It wouldn’t be wise to continue like he was. People around him, especially this woman, Grace, were putting on faces similar to those they would make if he had just walked into a minefield. Her reaction to his question was curious as well, sending him into silent thought. It wasn’t that he wasn’t expecting it. It was that he was. Why is it that when I do something, it’s always a bad choice? Nathaniel chewed the inside of his cheek gently, his eyes flickering from thing to ragged thing in this broken circus. This place felt less like a source of joy and more of… something else. Bittersweet, like a graveyard. Certainly not happiness. Nathaniel felt a pang of worry; that he had just flown into a web. His only consolation was that it wasn’t because of his mask. It wasn’t because of that…
He suddenly stopped, his thoughts pausing so his eyes could focus on the beauty before him. A bear; beautiful fur, majestic anatomy, and a perfect mask. I mean face. He was entranced, staring at the father bear, staring at it’s wonderful face. Those eyes were so intense, it made Nathaniel dizzy. He swallowed, watching Grace approach it with the baby bear. He took a few steps forward as well, ignoring any logic telling him to stay back. If this is going to be my job, he mused to himself, I may not mind being tangled in this web. He stood a few feet behind Grace, watching her work wonders with the circus bears. He had decided; she was one to trust. Anyone who could tame these animals was surely good at heart. "Do they have names?" he cooed, his voice sounding smooth for once. Of course, it was a silly question, but the bears intrigued him. How animals were treated intrigued him.

"The Cubs name is theo, and the last person who tamed the father named him Ambrose. He is quiet tame when the ringmaster isn't around... that man likes testing everyone's patience to the max. Not a very considerate person I'd say."

She pet the bear and handed the cub over to him. The bear was in no way restrained or even in a cage. Just it's own tent where it could stay dry and warm with it's fur. These bears were imported from America. Grizzlies, big ones that could tear a human to shreds like a rag doll if they'd wanted to. But for some reason when she turned Nathaniel wasn't too far behind her. She was curious as to if he was afraid of them or not. "Maybe not" She thought, "since they aren't harming me... he might assume they are kind." Although when she thought about that twice, she realized that assuming might not be the best trait to help one survive here at this establishment. The bears otherwise seemed to not really give a care that Nathaniel was there so Grace held out a hand to Nathaniel to help him to touch the bears.

"Do you want to pet theo? While you do that I'll help the kitten... We can spend a minute or so doing this here before we go clean the lion's tent, as well as clean and brush the stunt horses."

Senna looked at Seth and sighed a little before shaking her head.

"No, you were upset... but please, don't just storm out like that. It's not safe in thunderstorms and you probably caught a cold too."

She noticed that Seth's face was a little red and he looked a bit under the weather. Almost as if a ghost had stolen his energy while he was out and hurled him back only feet in front of the tent just to enter. Senna stood up and tried pulling Bobby up with her.

"Up Bobby... I think the four of us can head to the dining tent and whip up some nice beef stew and possibly some chicken noodle soup."

Senna looked to Huck as she took Bobby up with her to Seth grabbing his hand as if he were only a tiny kid.

"And that means you too Huck... we /all/ need something to eat."

Huck looked at the can of Commodity meat. "Sure beats this junk. Reckon you can live off it, but it tastes like crap." he growled. Picking up the can until he could find a trash can. That venison he had would have to wait 'til morning to cook up.

At their names, he hummed in approval. They deserved names. They were even so good as to be in tents, not cages. If his face could be seen, it would look sweet. Her assumption was correct as well; he wasn't afraid of them in the least. At her proposal to pet the cub, Nathaniel didn't skip a beat in striding forward and handing the small kitten to Grace. His eyes were still on the small cub. He stepped forward slowly, glancing from Theo to Ambrose every once in a while. He wasn't doing anything. Just in case, Nathaniel got low to the ground before he reached the small animal, stopping a few feet away from it and holding out his hand for it to smell. He trusted it wouldn't bite. It didn't, stepping forward clumsily and taking large whiffs of his aroma. Theo's small brown eyes looked up to the face of Nathaniel's mask, entranced perhaps that Nathaniel had ears like he, on the top of his head. Theo made a small noise of approval and wobbled forward, nuzzling his nose into Nathaniel's hand.
For the first time in a long while, Nathaniel laughed weakly. Giggling, he found it safe to set his other hand on the top of Theo's head as his other became wet from the bear's nose. A grunt came from behind Theo. The little cub shot up excitedly, running back to Ambrose and circled back to Nathaniel. Ambrose stood, his broad shoulders rising and lowering in beautiful asymmetry. The bones of the majestic creature seemed to be driving it, surrounded by thick muscles and a baggy fur coat. Nathaniel stood, his head meeting the beast's shoulders. It approached him, it's eyes somehow cutting through the mask. He looked directly into the big brown eyes and sighed contently. He could feel Theo rubbing against his legs. Ambrose tilted his head downwards a bit. At first it seemed an attempt to look deeper into Nathaniel's eyes, but it was soon understood. Nathaniel's hands rose, one going to each side of the grizzly's matted head. His fingers sifted through huge locks of thick, slightly rough fur. He set his forehead on Ambrose's, closing his eyes and feeling the warmth of the bear. He could feel it breathing, it's slight forward and backwards motions a steady, calming pulse. A sweet thought went through Nathaniel's mind, and he felt content with being here, in this web. He scratched the bear behind his ears, practically hugging him.

Seth nodded to all of them giving off a smile. He let Senna take his hand as well showing her that he liked the attention. To him she was like his mother at least she gave off the kind of vibe. He couldn't image life without her or any of them for that matter. He looked up at her then to the rest of them wanting to say something. He might as well give it a try. "You know, the carnival didn't always look like this." He started off. "It actually looked alive and happy at some point so did he." The boy stopped talking and waited for one of them to answer or at least say something so he could continue on.

"You have seen this place in better condition? And who looked better?"

She questioned looking toward Seth. Senna wondered if Seth had seen this place's better days, and if the person she mentioned was either Bobby or Siff. For now she couldn't really tell. She really did care for the boy, after all he was just a kid but she knew nothing about him, or the Carnival for that matter. Most of the people in it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Grace began healing the kitten. As far as the kittens health was concerned it had only some minor dehydration and was covered in dirt. She rinced the kitten off with a little bit of water and wiped her clean with a towel drying her off and holding the little bundle of joy back to Nathaniel.
"Siff gave you this kitten didn't he. Take good care of her okay. She's special, and needs you."
She could almost tell that the kitten was not truely what it seemed. Her healing abilities were beyond just sewing, cleaning and the like. The powers Grace posessed were almost given to her by Mr. Siff for her outstanding work in the past which she would rather not speak of. They were Magical indeed... and sometimes a curse but gave her good reason not to speak. She knelt down next to Nathaniel with the kitten cradled in one arm.
"Ambrose seems really fond of you. Maybe you could help me take care of his cub more often despite what other job Siff might give you after today. If you are okay with that."
He backed up from Ambrose, looking down to the sweet kitten in Grace's arms. The little thing was rinsed, dry, and ready to go. She still looked like she was sleeping, though. Nathaniel reached for her with one hand, touching her forehead gently. Grace brought up Ambrose's affection and his head returned to the magnificent bear, nodding and humming with agreement. "Yes, please, he cooed, his voice still calm in the presence of the bear. "I think I'd like that very much." He scratched Ambrose behind the ears one last time before he lowered his hand and watched the bear slink back to the rear of the tent. Nathaniel turned to Grace again, looking up at her before taking the kitten from her arms. He held it like it was a fragile little thing, easily broken, as if glass. He brought it up near his face, stroking it again. He did feel guilty, though, that he held the cat so close when he was still soaking. He loosened his grip on it, regretting getting it wet, and returned his attention to his mentor, curious of what else they would be doing.
"Yeah it was whimsical back then. Mr. Siff was actually a my friend if you could believe it." He closed his eyes and began to image the way the place use to look. The whole place was illuminated by bright lights and joyful music was played throughout the area. Kids and parents enjoyed the time they spent inside the carnival. "I didn't look like I do know. I was born into a very wealthy family. I had anything a kid could ever want. One day I came here with my parents and we watched the act that the performers did in the big top. When I saw Siff perform I was so amazed that I just had to talk to him. After I went home and noticed that I had changed. I was able to re-act some of the trick he did in the show. When I showed my parents they were afraid of me and told me never to do them again. Naturally, I didn't listen."
He looked down as of he was sick to his stomach. He wasn't sure if he should explain anymore to them. He thought maybe they would think differently of him.
((Siff is 150 years old... he was a kid before the carnival became what it was... he didn't own the carnival till it was cursed. Unless Seth was there 150 years prior, and somehow was friends with Siff when he was a kid... In which case he was an awesome friend ^^; Please, if you wish to put in a plot twist ask first. ))
Grace held out a soft towel to the boy to wrap the kitten in.
"Despite lack of decent tents, we still get a good supply of working materials if we work for them."
That towel was hers. But she might as well use it to help the others in the carnival. It was something new and undeteriated. Almost a treasure compared to what was surrounding their view. The hay covered floor of the bear tent, the canvas over the tent patched several times with what looked like even more old fabric on it's last life.
Huck had gotten to the food tent and looked around. Hustling back to his campsite, he brought back the venison he had stored away and walked back over. "Reckon it's gonna go t' waste if I don't cook it. I was raised up better'n that." he said and walked into the kitchen.
"That's true... and Seth..."
She hadn't heard an answer from him, mostly because they were heading to the kitchen and she began to prepare food for the lot of them. Normally they would have to prepare food on a good basis where everyone on the Carnival ground could come around, laugh and share what she would call "Family time" In the kitchen. But, only them. And it only seemed to be them and a couple others who she's never really seen for a long while since she's been there. Which really confused her since she saw, more than enough people performing at the big top just before she was sent to work at the freak show. Senna was quickly growing a little cautious of Siff, weary of his actions. Although she still was interested in Seth's answer about the Carnival. He'd seen it better, but couldn't it have been an illusion. She saw a beautiful place when she entered, a nice man and some somewhat suspicious but loving looking children.
((It's cool, but if Seth is one of the original peeps he would have to know siff when he was a kid too... Siff became an adult the moment the place was cursed, and skipped child and teenhood lucky him xp But probably the reason he acts so mature 3nodding "Not really" and it took time for the place to fall apart, physically although the people would have almost instantly been affected. if anything Seth would know most about Grace. And she would probably have him not say anything about her, and Victoria probably shouldn't be so well known at all. ))
Seth turned away. "The truth is I new Siff when he was my age. One hundred and fifty years ago." He came right out with it. "A curse was placed one him and me but with different effects. We are both illusionist that is why we are connected. One night my parents came into my room and told me how much they loved me and cared for me. The next morning I was on the street in some alley way. I lived that way for a while, hand around tons of different people until Siff found me. His age had changed but I knew he was. He took me in and it was like old times again until I caught onto what he was doing. Best friends are now the worst of enemies...end of story..." He said sadly.
