He shrugged. Proteus had a point, the human race was inclined to always be in conflict with each other, however, due to this being the norm, humans were used to it.

"It's only stressful if you don't know how to ignore it or able to manipulate it in your favour"

The water sprite laughed.

"How very unseelie of you," Proteus smiled coolly, "so what will you get if you beat young Jareth?"

He shrugged.

"The satisfaction of having beaten him at his own game"

It would be a strange statement, coming from a human, if one considered that most humans tended to be of the greedy nature. Yet, for him, the satisfaction of having achieved something near impossible was a far greater reward than any financial gains.

Protheus glanced at Joe pausing briefly before continuing.

"Humans have evolved since last I met one," he stated, "there might be hope for you yet."

He laughed at the comment.

"If there was any hope for me, I wouldn't be challenging the goblin king"

He admitted. Though, he got the feeling that Proteus' comment was more due to the fact he wasn't trying to get riches and glory out of this encounter.

"You'd be surprised how much a simple challenge can turn a future," the water creature smiled, "it can teach you things you never dreamed."

For his part though Proteus was not one of admirable virtues, he was of an ancient age. Though the trait was often buried under lechery and vice, he was one of the wisest creatures in the underground. The river sprite was not one given to share his gift with just anyone, but Joe seemed like the right sort of person.

"Like....?"

He enquired. So far, the 'simple' challenge he had accepted had taught him that some women liked to play with fire and goblins were annoying.

He doubted very much that he learned any valuable lessons though, seeing as he found most creatures annoying and any creature that was good looking was most likely worthy of being slept with, fire or not.

"You might learn things about yourself and what you are truly capable of," he replied.

Profeus' sea green eyes suddenly became intense and penetrating. Within that gaze, it was clear to see why elementals suspected him capable of looking into the future. An eternity of wisdom stormed within the depth of his eyes...profound as the ocean, yet clear as a mountain spring, yet it was over in an instant and the water sprite returned to his slack careless self.

"...or you might find out just what to say to get a nice shag," he grinned, "either way it's win-win."

He didn't like the look that developed on Proteus' face, that look seemed to be the type that could look straight into a mans soul, bypassing any facade set up to hide his true identity. The dislike to it showed as he had trouble hiding the sudden uncomfortableness, until Proteus pointed out that he might just learn what to say.

He burst out laughing at that. More and more, he got to like the water spirit and his layed back attitude towards life.

"Now that.. would be beneficial"

He agreed with Proteus, showing that he had dealt with more than one rejection in the past and it was almost certain that if he met certain women, the same thing as happened with Daphne and Proteus would happen with Joe and whoever the woman he had offended was.

The water being gave Joe a rougish glance.

"If you do figure that one out, share the secret," he smiled, "over a thousand years and I've yet to perfect that."

"So I saw"

Apparently, both of them had to learn a lot about the female race, and by the sounds of it, it would take a VERY long time before they understood that race.

"Women aside, how easily is the goblin king offended?"

He asked, wanting to judge his chances, especially considering he had already offended one of his concumbines.

Proteus pondered the question for a minute.

"It behooves you not to insult him," he finally stated, "flaws and flaming women aside, he is the king of these lands...I'm pretty sure that means something to you earth-bound."

"It.. does.. "

He reluctantly admitted. The problem was that it did mean something to him, though, rather than the title of King being one which deserved respect, which most humans would pay a king as it showed authority, he was one of those who challenged authority at every turn.

The reluctance was soon pushed aside as he shrugged. There was nothing he could do about it from where they were now, besides, how easily someone got offended wasn't something that was easily ascertained simply by asking such a question.

"Guess we'll just have to wait and see"

Protheus smirked.

"Don't get in too much trouble, lad," he said, "sometimes it's easier to go with the current. Let them think they're in control even if they're not. If it's a trifling thing, then why spend any energy fighting it? Save your energy for something worthwhile."

He ran his fingers through his mop of disheveled blue hair.

"You can't take on the whole world, you know."

He nodded in agreement with Proteus. He was good at what he did simply because no-one expected him to be good at it, because it looked like he was goin with the flow when he was manipulating things behind the scene to go according to his wishes.

He hid his arrogance well when Proteus told him he could not take on the world. He was both young enough and confident enough to believehe'd be able to take the world on and win... if there was something in it for him.

After a few minutes of walking in silence, he spoke again.

"What would you call 'something worthwile'?"

He enquired, wanting to know what someone like Proteus, who seemed to have some experience in the game of deception, would fight for.
